On 3 occasions when I did not leave my car in gear even though I engaged the emergency brake on a flat surface my car rolled so the e brake does not work I always leave my car in gear now.
The parking brake calipers and pads freeze and will not release when temperature drops below 32 degrees--while the handle is fully released inside the vehicle. When in neutral and pushed car will not roll, and when in gear and given gas car barely budges. Taken twice to dealership--by tow truck--but when arrived temperature had risen above 32 degrees and pads etc had released. Dealership has not yet been able to reproduce the problem. Dealership inspected entire assembly twice and found no problems. No repairs have been made. I am a firefighter/emt first responder and respond in my personal vehicle to fires/accidents/medical emergencies etc. Having a car that does not operate correctly in cold weather is not an option for me.
In the winter of 2006, I had to bring in my car in for the dealership to fix the parking brake. What happened was, the brake cable split somewhere allowing moisture to collect. When the parking brake was applied it would cause that moisture to freeze, with the result of locked brakes. This has also happened in 2007. The car is no longer on warranty so I don't bother getting it fixed anymore, knowing it will just happen again. Instead I just park on flat areas and leave it in gear. Ford has never offered a valid solution other than bring it in every time it breaks. Not impressed!.
The vehicle was parked on hill for about 15 min. With emergency brake engaged. While looking at car through living room window we saw the car just start rolling away. Checked car after and emergency brake still engaged ! !.

(1) cold weather in michigan. Dry car, no additional frozen water on vehicle. (2) parking brake does not release when freezing temperatures exist. Unable to move in reverse without heavy acceleration. Free play in parking brake handle eventually goes away after sitting ( 3 - 10 minutes ), or driving forward with the vehicle for roughly . 5 mile. (3) dealer could not verify concern, I scheduled an appointment again to look at this problem, but was unable to keep the appointment. No service bulletins in regard to this problem. I am not currently using parking brake as I don't wish to break anything, or prematurely wear anything out. This vehicle was a fleet vehicle purchased with 17,210 miles on it. Dealer is very cordial, and appears to be very knowledgeable, but has not had this problem presented to them previously. No service bulletin from Ford regarding this problemi previously submitted a complaint (odi id number : 10106576), and have since taken the vehicle back to the dealer for service. It appears that the service work they have since performed has fixed the problem (hopefully for good). The following warranty services were performed:
"replace both rear e-brake cables, replace rear brake pads due to hot spots and rt rear inner and outer pads heat cracked. Use on car brakelathe machine both rear rotors before spec . 550 after cut spec. . 530
install 4 new stainless slides, lube complete assembly and road test. All ok"

2 days earlier had car at mechanic and he said my pads were a little low so they shoould be changed. The day I had the appointmnet to replace the pads the rear caliper frozen open and emergency brake would not work either. While in my driveway with foot on brake pedal, car started rolling forward. Hit post in driveway and tore off driver mirror and dented door. Brought car back to mechanic then towed car to dealer as I had extended warranty and didn't want to pay mechanic for parts or labor as mechanic stated caliper frozen. Dealer would not fix damage to door/mirror. The pads still had something left otherwise rotors would be scratched up with metal digging in. There is no evidence of metal against metal what so ever. Dealer also stated master cylinder needed replacing as it had leaked all fluid out of system. Needed to bleed system and replace caliper. Dealer said nobody would do anything about damage and it was my problem. I had the dealer put the new pads on that my mechanic had purchased for doing my brakes. Dealer wanted to charge me $195. 00 to do this. I knew someone there and they waived the fee but I had to pay $100. 00 deductable for extended warranty coverage. Do not buy a Ford!!!!!.

Since purchasing my certified 2001 Mustang gt (used) I have had problems with the steering pulling to the left during driving and/or braking. I took it to Ford 8 times and finally they said it was the cambers and casters. After having it for a year I have had to continuously put steering fluid in. Now Ford has discovered that something called the steering rack was broke and leaking. Also, the emergency break had become loose. And now there is a problem with a whining and swaying in the rear end. So far they can't find out what the whining is and found that the wheel bears were locking up. A diagnosis hasn't been made at this moment and it's still with Ford for 4 days.
