Six problems related to spare tire have been reported for the 1999 Ford Ranger. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Spare Tire problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2011

1999 Ford Ranger with 130,000 miles. Leaf springs rusted out (both sides) and mounting brackets also rusted. Went to 3 autobody shops and nobody would touch it. Bumper just rusted out on both sides and spare tire well is completely rusted. Bumper and spare currently being held together with 2, 1900 lb chains. Ranger runs fine just body falling apart. Very concerned tire, bumper may become dislodged and cause further damage to myself or others. Gas tank also rusted but not leaking so far.

2 Spare Tire problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

Cable attaching spare tire to undercarriage of truck snapped, causing tire to fall into road. I contacted Ford with my concern, was told they would not repair this defect due to my truck being out of warranty.

3 Spare Tire problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2002

For 3 days in a row I have had all 4 tires and the spare tires, making that 5 tires all together disintegrate. These were the wilderness ht size 14 from firestone. Neither Ford nor firestone want to be responsible. The steel belts have completely come through the tire and I have cracks and gouges in all 5 tires. Noone wants to replace them because they are not part of the recall. I would like to know what the size of the tire has to do with it. Obviously the way the tire is made is the problem. If they have to recall any of them than obviously the problem is with firestone. They should step up to the plate and take responsibility instead of trying to blame the consumer for their failures.

4 Spare Tire problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2000

Driving to work at 6:00 am on main street in town at 40 miles an hr when I felt rear drivers side tire blow. Immendiately pulled off road and tread was completely pulled away from the tire. Put on spare tire and went on to work called local firestone dealer at 8:00 to report incident, they told me to bring it in and they would look at it. When I arrived they checked it and said it was not on the recall list, so they could do nothing about it, they said I would have to purchase a new tire. I questioned them concerning the low mileage and the warrenty that would be on the tire itself, they said I could have hit something and damaged the tire myself therefore, they could not cover the tire under the warrenty. The problem I have with that is that I did not hit anything then or in the past and my rim was not damaged a all, which was very clear to them. When I returned to work I called firestones toll free # direct the cust service rep advised me that since it was not on the recall list they could not do anything at this time, but in future if it did come on the recall list if I kept my tire and receipt they would refund my tire and money. I expressed my concern that I am still driving on the same tires, I was very surprised that I was not shown any concern in regards to this and was told to wait until it showed up on the recall list, I asked her how this got on the recall list she told me to contact this address. She said they do not investigate this, that the NHTSA would take care of it. All I want is for someone to look at my tires and assure me that they are safe and also refund my money considering the low milage that was on a 4 wheel drive truck that is suppose to have heavy duty tires. . 5 Spare Tire problem

Firestone refuses to take my spare tire for reimbursement. Spare has all the correct numbers on it. Spare printed with "for temporary use only" and therefore will not take it. I have not heard of this policy. What does temporary mean? how many miles can I run on it? nobody can tell me. Sometimes you have to run on your spare a long time. Is this spare tire going to be safe ???? ???? ?( dot number: vdhl1py498 tire size: p235/75r15 ).

6 Spare Tire problem

Truck came equipped with p 245 75 r 16 tires and wheels, but has a p235 75 r 15 for a spare. Was informed by dealer not to use 4x4 with this combo due to stress on drivetrain. I am also concerned about this from a safety point. I ask that Ford replace the 15 inch wheel combination with the correct size. They are reluctant to do so.
