1 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 2006 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

While driving the spare tire rack fell from the truck. Since the evap canister from the gas tank is attached to the spare tire rack it to was damaged with the canister being broken open while the rack scrapped on the road. After further inspection of the frame it was found that the gas tank support brackets had fallen completely off leaving only a thin strap supporting the gas tank. The frame also showed extensive corrosion on the front crossmember which supports the lower control arms. Brake line support tabs on the frame were also found to have completely separated from the frame at the weld. These are very dangerous situations and for highway safety and the trucks should be recalled. Thank you in advance for your attention in this matter.

2 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 2003 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The pocket on the frame that holds the fuel tank straps rusted out. This could cause the fuel tank to fall off while driving and cause a fire or explosion.

3 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 1997 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

Looked under my Ford Ranger and saw that both of the metal straps that hold the fuel tank to the vehicle had rusted through and broken in half. I saw that there was a recall for the same issues on my year, but only for the Ford f150, not the Ford Ranger, even though the issue is the same.

4 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 1995 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 1995 Ford Ranger. The contact stated that the fuel tank straps were corroded. The manufacturer advised the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number 11v385000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was repaired. The fuel tank straps was replaced. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure and current mileage was 112,000. Kmj.

5 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Vehicle has severe frame rust. Recently rear bumper fell off due to frame deterioration. Bumper brackets had nothing to secure to. More recently, one of the straps holding the gas tank broke away from the frame due to severe deterioration of the frame. I had to improvise a restraint strap since a replacement would do no good since the frame connection area was rotted thru. Leaf spring brackets are on the verge of separation from the frame, again due to severe frame deterioration. The exterior body and interior are in good condition. For a 2000 vehicle to have this serious of a frame problem has to be the result for poor material and/or material rust proofing. Found numerous complaints by other 2000 Ranger owners for similar issues.

6 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 2000 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 03/31/2013

While home from college for the weekend I investigated the smell of gas my son who drives this extended cab Ranger XLT notified me of. Upon looking underneath I noticed a small shinny spot on the bottom of the tank with no drips or runs. After returning to college later that week he stated it worsened to leakage on the ground of duel 4" spots, one on each side below the tank. After viewing a photo of the bottom of the wet tank I noticed drops on the forward strap. I drove the truck to my location this past weekend and pulled the bed off to access the top of the fuel pump which had standing fuel. Upon turning the key to activate the fuel pump I saw a fine pinhole sized stream pumping from the plastic 90 degree fitting on top of the pump. Upon closer investigation I noticed this leaking fitting had what appeared to be abrasion at the outside turn. I was able to obtain a replacement fitting and replaced it fixing the leakage problem. The cost of this repair to me was the 8 hours vacation time at $28 per hour I was required to use to accomplish the repair and the cost of the new fuel line fitting. The seriousness of this fitting failure and my concern is that it will happen to someone with less awareness of their surroundings while driving this model of vehicle. Had this failure gone undetected, ignored or even sprayed fuel onto the adjacent hot exhaust this would have been tragic. Ford and the nhsta needs to look into first what causes the damage to these fittings and if replacing this plastic fitting with a steel one would be a way to prevent this critical part from becoming damaged or worn to the point of catastrophic failure. The repair cost should be reimbursed to the owners of these 2000 Ford Rangers by Ford since this is an unadvertised expense to us who purchased these vehicles with this engineering defect at the time of purchase.

7 Gas Tank Strap problem of the 2001 Ford Ranger

Failure Date: 09/18/2012

Symptoms included engine stall during highway and uphill driving. Stopped at fuel station to fill tank; when tank approached full; sound of structural failure noted followed by large fuel spillage from tank area (saturated truck rt rear underbelly, ground, rear tire, my shoes and lower portion of pants). Subsequent inspection revealed gas tank strap detached from frame due to severe and widespread frame rot. Tank apparently hanging from remaining corrosion damaged strap and fuel filler neck (caused tank to tilt backwards; starving engine of fuel during uphill or dynamic driving). Fuel filler neck was also severely rotted and finally failed during fuel fill causing entire tank loaded with 16 gallons fuel to become detached at sharp angle. Following incident; vehicle professionally inspected revealing extensive frame and suspension component disintegration due to premature failure of Ford designed sub-standard materials. Large areas of material missing from both front frame members (rear of engine), large holes in frame areas forward of rear wheels (where fuel tank straps attack), severe and widespread frame and suspension component corrosion. Vehicle condemned by inspection personnel; now sits idle in driveway. Ranger purchased new (year end, 2001) with dealer rust-proof. Vehicle regularly maintained and kept free from road salt with regular underbelly wash. Vehicle only had 120,000 miles and looked very clean on exterior. I have owned many vehicles in my 35 year driving history; never have I experienced anything like this prior. Ford obviously used ultra-sub standard materials in Ranger critical suspension component designs; without regard for the safety of unsuspecting owners. This is criminal, it will only be a matter of time before people are injured or killed by these design defects.
