~tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford Ranger. On several occasions, the driver and passenger door latches failed to remain closed. The contact stated that the door locks would independently unlock sometimes while in traffic. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be repaired. A local dealer was informed of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.

I have a extang encore tonneau cover on my 2010 Ford Ranger that flew backwards while driving down the road damaging the rear fiberglass panel. The front latch assembly has a poor design in which water drains down inside of the latch assembly and freezes and ice builds up. You think the panel is secured when it is not. Extang needs to redesign the latch assembly to prevent water from getting inside the latch assembly. When I contacted extang they said they haven't had anyone else complain about this. They sent me a new plastic washer and o-ring for the latch but water still drains into the assembly.

1998 Ford Ranger has security issue which allows any individual to unlock the door and no one would even know it until you find your stuff missing. All it takes is a screw drive under the door handle to unlock the door and gain entry. This is common to most all Rangers and it is hard to report any loss without proof that there was illegal entry because there is no damage to the door or the door handle. This must not be taken lightly and Ford needs to come up with something to prevent this.

My Ford Ranger supercab has electric door locks. For the past several months, the passenger door's lock has begun being intermittent about opening with the lock/unlock buttons on the two doors. Now it will neither open or close with the buttons most of the time. Recently, even the driver;s door lock has begun this symptom of not opening or closing. Must use the key to unlock the door. Very inconvenient. If there is a problem where someone needed to escape the vehicle quickly, such as a fire or other accident, you have to fumble to try an pull up on the lock button, sticking through the door liner.

While using ramps to load lawn equipment into the bed of my 2003 Ford Ranger pickup, both of the tailgate limit cables broke simultaneously. Examination of the failed cabled indicated they both broke at the same location, roughly the midpoint of the cable where it is folded when the tailgate is in the up position. It would appear that water might have entered the cable sheath and rusted the cable. This failure resulted in the tailgate dropping approximately six inched and nearly causing two persons plus heavy equipment to fall to the ground. This could have resulted in serious injury. This appears to be a classic design flaw. I tried to get new cables from Ford, but they are on backorder pending re-design (according to the parts department at the Ford dealer I went to). This seems to indicate that Ford is aware of the problem but has not notified its customers.

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Ranger. The contact noticed that the front passenger side door makes a loud rattling noise when driving various speeds. After careful inspection, the contact noticed that the door moves as if it is not properly latched. Speed was not a factor during the failures. The contact is in the process of having the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 6,200.

The steel cables that support the tail gate of my 2003 Ford Ranger failed without warning. The tailgate dropped and it the bumper. Had I been standing on the tail gate or had a load placed on it I would have fallen to the ground or the load would have dropped which either would have caused injury. The cables failed due to corrosion. They are covered by a plastic sleeve with open ends which allows water to enter the cable assembly and become trapped causing the cable to corroded prematurely.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Ranger. While driving at any speed, the passenger and driver's side doors rattle and shake as if something was loose. The contact often holds his leg against the door to lessen the noise. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. In addition, the tailgate handle is made of metal, coated with plastic and has levers on both sides. The driver's side lever detached because the leverage was unevenly distributed. The current mileage was 22,000 and failure mileage was 24. Updated 10/16/08
the consumer stated the dealer fixed the problem. Updated 10/20/08.

I purchased a new 2001 Ford range in Nov of that year. The truck came with a hard fiberglass bed cover. It has a locking system and a safety latch at the inside of the top. This safety latch failed when I was in the bed and the top shut down. I have contacted Ford about the problem. They have said it is not their responsibility to fix this as they claim it is an aftermarket accessory. The truck was brought into the dealer before the original warranty was up. The top is listed in the owners manual and it was part of the truck at the time of purchase. If my kid's had been locked inside the situation could have been worse.
