Transmission problem: I have had my 2000 Ford Taurus for only 3 years and the car's transmission is no good! the exact mileage on the odometer reads 48,143 miles. I feel that I have been sold a lemon. My husband was driving our car on 10/7/07 while on our trip to atlanta, georgia and the car broke down in the middle of a major highway - jimmy carter boulevard. His life was in danger because another passenger's car almost crashed into the back of our vehicle. The car was running and suddenly stopped. The car note will not be paid off until December '2008. I feel that there definitely needs to be a safety recall on this particular Ford model car. I feel that I will need to make a television appearance on consumer report and make the public aware of this problem.
: the contact stated while turning around in the driveway, the gears would not shift. This happened without warning. The dealer was alerted. Updated 12/1/20006 - the shifter cable broke.
Having trouble with shifter cable on this car, after putting car into I thought was park, the car drifted and the brakes had to be applied. The bolt fell out and the car would not start. This should be looked into ASAP and then recall said item, this is a serious safety matter.

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning applied the gear in drive and vehicle went into reverse, causing an accident.
The transmission shut down while crossing a busy intersection. The transmission now works only in the reverse gear.
The car jerks and hesitates continuously. Ph.
Consumer has to apply brakes a couple of times to get transmission to shift out of park. Vehicle has not been examined by dealer.
Nar 01/16/2003. The consumer had problems with the transmission on 4 occasions which ultimately left him stranded on the highway.
The automatic transmission of this vehicle literally fell apart, while the car was being operated. Luckily my wife and 3 children were not on the highway when this occurred! after having the transmission looked at and fixed, we were told by the mechanics that a gear broke, as a result of poor craftsmanship. As a result the transmission was destroyed. There was nothing that we could have done to prevent this from happening. Ford has a long history with faulty transmissions in the Ford Taurus. For some reason they are unwilling to fix the problem. A transmission with 42,000 miles on it should not just fall apart!.
Consumer put vehicle in reverse, but vehicle went forward. Towed vehicle to dealer, who found cable snapped on transmission.
Vehicle accelerates mostly at speeds of 35-40 mph, engine revvs. Consumer has to brake to slow vehicle down. The vehicle also backs up while in drive and while stopped at light.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Consumer was driving 35mph and vehicle geared down and then transmission locked up. Had turned into highway, and hit the median. Had contacted a tow company, and vehicle was towed. Tow driver indicated transmission was on ground and would need to replace it. Consumer feels that dealer should replace with another vehicle. Problem has duplicated.
Vehicle is having problems with the transmission. The vehicle failed to move forward, except while in 1st gear. Provide further details.
While driving the automatic transmission went out of gear in the middle of an intersection. The transmission would only go into reverse. This failure was caused due to inadequate lubrication of the transmission when manufactured.
While driving the driver noticed smoke coming from the rear of vehicle. The driver stopped and saw smoke coming from the tail pipe and fluid dripping under the vehicle. An independent mechanic informed the consumer that the transmission case cracked and replaced it.
The vehicle experiences unexpected acceleration at moderate speeds (40-45 mph). The accelleration occurs while coasting (no brake or gas pedal engaged). The acceleration is severe enough that I have to brake to slow the vehicle down.
