While driving my 2001 Ford Taurus ses today at city speeds (30 mph) I heard a very loud metallic clanking sound. I drove straight home and we put the car on the lift to inspect. We found the front left coil spring was broken from what appears to be rust/corrosion. We live in illinois & called Ford to see about the recall (04v332-4235) and how to go about repairing this. The agent checked our VIN and told us that our car did not qualify for this recall despite having been produced in the chicago manufacturing plant, which is one of the plants involved in the recall. Our tire was very close to being shredded by the broken spring and could have caused a very serious accident. I believe our car should be a part of this recall and stated to the Ford agent that I was dissatisfied by the apparent runaround I was receiving. I requested a formal complaint to be made, and he stated he would place my complaint in their database. If he actually did, I have no idea. All cars produced in the time frame at the chicago plant should be included in this recall. I will not buy another Ford product again due to this issue.
The front, left coil spring broke leaving a jagged edge that shredded the tires sidewall when the car was put in reverse. I do not know exactly when the spring broke, but I was driving on the freeway prior to parking the vehicle. Had this happened on the freeway, the results could have been disastrous. The tire that was shredded was a near new studded snow tire. The total cost to repair the suspension and replace the tire will be about 400 - 500 dollars.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the driver was driving 45 mph when the front driver's coil spring fractured. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and the coil spring was repaired. An authorized dealer was then notified and stated that the vehicle was no longer covered under the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs). The manufacturer offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 105,000.
Front passenger coil spring fractured. This was an item that was covered by recall 04m04. The fix was to install a cheap plate to prevent the coil spring from puncturing the tire when it cracks. The recall included a prevision to replace a broken spring if the vehicle was in service less than 10 years or less than 150,000. I am disappointed that the corrective action was not to fix the coil spring itself before it would break.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited an abnormally loud noise while reversing. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the driver and passenger side front coil springs were fractured. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer advised the contact that there was a prior manufacturer's recall for the coil springs but the recall has since expired. The VIN was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the drivers side coil spring broke and punctured the drivers side tire when he was driving 5 mph. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was awaiting repair. The contact referenced recall 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs) but was told by the dealer that they would not cover the replacement of the springs. The contact called the manufacturer; however, they offered no assistance. The current and failure mileage was 146,750.
Front suspension shock broke, coil spring ruptured tire.
Front coil broke when I was driving.
The front suspension on my 2001 Ford Taurus has both coils broken. There is a "customer satisfaction" recall on this problem for 10 years or 150,000. My vehicle has 170,000 miles. If this was a "safety" recall then there would be no limit. I believe this should be a safety issue. The coils can easily slide loose causing steering to be jammed with loss of control and/or tire damage resulting in very rapid lose of tire compression. Both situations have a high likely hood of resulting in an accident.
Routine driving is suburbs - back coil spring broke in 2001 Taurus - this has been a huge issue and Ford is not helping out. There is a recall on he front springs, so they were replaced for free, but the back ones cost my 83 year old mother $1000. Please doing something about this. My brother had a 2003 and the same thing happened. No recall, so he had to pay all of it. I once had a 2000 and when it broke it blew out the tire and I almost killed me, my family and about 10 other people on the highway. This is as bad as the Toyota thing.
Front suspension coil broke and punctured side of tire. Had this happen to back wheel at considerable expense. Hopefully this will be covered under warranty. Luckily this did not happen while my daughter was driving on highway to school or she could have been in a critical accident!.
2001 Ford Taurus wagon with 80,000 miles while driving on route 80 I heard a loud banging sound in the front end - the left front coil spring broke. Luckily the protective guards installed last year prevented the tire from blowing up.
My both front and both back spring coils broke in my car. No-one ever notified me about recall for my car models. I am lucky that didn't got into any accidents. My tires are less than 2 year old and are junk because of the springs damaging them. Now I will have to purchase another tires, and it will cost me a money I don't really prepared to spend right now. I found out about recall on springs coil on my car by overhearing someone talking about it. I am really disappointed about that. Do Ford really waiting for someone to get into accident to fix their problems?.

In 2002, Ford placed a protective cover over the coil spring. The cover was removed when the struts were replaced in 2007. The vehicle will be towed to the dealer. Nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension: front:springs:coil springs) was referenced. The purchase date was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 92,000.

Heard a bang heading off an off ramp and car shot into guard rail with drivers side of car breaking headlight, bumper, bending hood, fender and door and various scratches along side of car. Had car towed to dealer where purchased upon investigation both front coil springs were broken and front tires were shredded. As repairs were being made I found there was a Ford recall on the front coil springs for the fractures an shredding of tires. Never received recall notice. The Ford motor company, after repairs were made, don't want to reimburse repairs made because the repairs weren't made through them and refuse to pay the body damage.
Dealer found all four springs broken after car was grinding on rear tire. Dealer is replacing front ones per recall but I feel rear springs are also prone to failure and Ford should issue a recall. Car suffered tire damage to right rear wheel.
Broken rear springs on 2001 Ford Taurus cost over 500 to replace. Front springs defective also and caused flat tire. Springs in front replaced at Ford cost. I was not reimbursed for tire.
Brought in my 2001 Ford Taurus for a front end shake and was informed by the mechanic that all 4 coil springs were broken!.

Broken rear coil springs. I was to the dealer 2 months ago and had the broken front coil springs replaced under warranty. Now, during a state inspection ,was informed the rear springs were broken and must be replaced at my cost.
I had a catastrophic failure of the coil springs on the 2001 Ford Taurus, and had to replace the front coil springs at my expense. Later , I found out about safety recall 04v332000 , and presented the bill to the local Ford garage for reimbursement of the price of the parts. The district Ford recall representative refused my claim and would not give a reason other than the work was not done at a Ford garage. What were the options. The spring destroyed the tire and I could have crashed under other conditions.

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus se. I took my vehicle in for nys inspection and found that 2 of my coils were broken, one rear and one front coil. My car has only 27,300 miles on it. This is a ridiculous problem to have with so few miles on my car. I took my car to the dealer and they replaced only one front coil and I had to pay to have the rear coil fixed. I have since learned that they are required to fix both front coils, even if only one breaks, which they did not do. However, why are the rear coils not covered in the recall??? they are also subject to salt. The rear coils are just as faulty as the front coils.
