1 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2015

On 5 15 2015, 2001 Ford Taurus with 32k miles was taken in for an alignment at a local auto repair business. Mechanic observed the rear drivers side spring was broken and had damaged the tire. After further research, this is a common defect for this vehicle and year. There is a NHTSA recall for the front springs for vehicles in specific states, however recall does not apply to rear springs or suspension as of may 2015. On NHTSA safety complaint website, documentation has been submitted indicating at least two deaths have been linked to the failure of the rear springs.

During mulitipoint inspection dealer found rear springs broken total cost of repair $572. 58 . Your data base shows this has been a defective part issue and no recall. Local dealer not aware of rear spring issue.

3 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2012

We were pulling into a parking lot when we heard a loud "klunk". From that point on we always heard during left turns. The next day, I had my mechanic look at the car and the rear springs had broken. He said that it was good to get it in. $600. 00 bill. This needs to be a recall! people have died.

4 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2011

2001 Ford Taurus ses left front spring snapped. This was discovered at ~95,000 miles and 10 weeks after the Ford extended recall program expired. The end of the spring was sitting in the small well at the bottom of the spring and the broken end was very rusty. About 3" snapped off the top end of the spring. Online research indicates this is a very common problem and many people report that the spring punctures a tire and causes suspension and frame damage. I will need to have the springs, along with the struts, bushings, etc. Replaced. Both of my rear springs were also broken and were replaced (at my own expense) in may, 2010.

5 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

Drove the car normally, and it does have some mileage on it, but upon reading online I see that this is a very common failure. Failure: rear strut springs cracking or breaking into multiple pieces. I can see where parts where out, but they should not break. Rear spring broke and damaged tire (sidewall). If I had been going faster, say highway speeds this could have resulted in a pretty significant accident. I was lucky. There is clearly a defect with such a high number of these springs breaking. Thanks lane.

6 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Ford has recalled the front suspension springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus 80000 miles. But my rear spring fractured and nearly caused an accident with my four children in the car. I feel if the front springs are faulty then the backs are just as dangerous!!.

7 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

Both rear springs are broke.

8 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2010

Rear springs broke while moving in driveway. What would have happened if I was at speed on the highway? should have lasted longer than 72,000 miles. I take good care of this car and had planned to keep it a long time.

9 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

Both rear springs broken on a 2001 Ford Taurus ses. While rotating tires, the mechanic noticed that both rear springs were snapped. Two new struts with springs were installed at a cost of over $700. The parts are not available, however, I personally saw the left rear spring in the car before it was replaced.

10 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

My 2001 Ford Taurus rear springs broke, causing the struts to break also. This is the 3rd Taurus I have owned that did this. Ford did recall on the front springs but not the back spring. This is a safety issue.

11 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2010

I have a problem with my 2001 Ford Taurus that I feel is a safety issue. My concern with my vehicle is that I discovered that it has three broken springs, one of which came very close to causing damage to my tire, I discovered this after I heard a loud noise from the front of the car. Upon investigating I discovered a broken front spring. Following this I discovered both rear springs were broken as well. I thought it was very odd to have three broken springs on the same car. Researching this problem on the web I found this to be a very common problem. I contacted a Ford dealer for service and was informed that Ford has extended the warranty period for the front springs but not the rear. I feel this is a safety issue and should require Ford to recall and fix this problem. Observing how close the spring was to making contact with the tire I feel there could have been severe consequences should the spring cause sudden tire failure. I believe that a springs sudden failure would have the potential to cause handling problems as well. Again, three spring failures? it would appear this may be a manufacturing problem such as a defective heat treating process or inferior steel used in the manufacturing of the springs.

12 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Front springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus station wagon have broken, within a few months of each other. I thought that the problem was not common, but when I did some research on the internet I discovered that a recall notice was supposed to have been sent out in 2004. I did not receive that recall, even thought the car was registered with Ford. Note - these were clean breaks and not a result of the gradual deterioration of metal due to rust (caused by winter salt). The problem has not caused a crash, but my research found that in many cases the faulty springs broke through the spring seat and rupture the front tire. This problem has been documented as - 2000 Ford Taurus recall id from NHTSA: 04v332000 auto recall date: 20040715. Although that defect applied to a model year 2000 Taurus, the problem occurs in other model years. This is a serious safety hazard, particularly if the spring ruptures a front tire when the car is being driven on a highway. The problem has also been reported on rear springs, which have also punctured the tires. As such it should be mandatory for Ford to issue a recall notice to all owners of Taurus automobiles. This has not been done and will not be done unless NHTSA demands it.

13 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2010

2001 Ford Taurus - 74,000 miles - both rear springs are broken and will have to be replaced. The mechanic said he sees a lot of these broken springs in the Taurus line. He said quite often they will tear into the tire and cause severe damage or an accident.

14 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2010

2001 Ford Taurus rear spring failure . The drivers side rear spring broke and ruined the tire . It almost wore through the side wall of the tire . I think this is a real safety problem . I called Ford and to report the problem . At this time their are no recalls for rear springs .

15 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2009

I own a 2001 Ford Taurus which I purchased brand new. It has less than 70, 000 miles and the rear springs completely rotted out. The service station advised me that I shouldn't even drive the car home because the spring could puncture the tire. It cost $850 to replace the springs and the struts. Ford recalled the front but not the back. This is a safety issue and Ford should recall the back as well as the front springs.

16 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2009

My son was driving my 2001 Ford Taurus. He pulled in to my driveway with smoke coming from under the hood and right side of car. My mechanic said the front spring broke which also broke the strut and shredded the boot. Its covered by the warranty. Now my concern is the rear springs. Why is there no recall for this! apparently Ford knows of these complaints and does nothing! please issue a recall!! before someone gets killed!.

17 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

Driving my 2001 Ford Taurus and realized I had a flat. My husband came to get me and noticed that my rear tire was shredded and my rear springs broke and the jagged metal shredded my tire. I called Ford who told me it was covered under something like a recall, but not an actual recall. We drop car off, I then get a call saying it will be $736!!! the service manager said he didn't realize it was my rear tire (not front) when he told me it would be 100% covered. Why isn't it covered if all these complaints and they are covering front. My car has a little more than 40,000 miles on it. This was after spending $1200 on air conditioning system last summer and $600 for heater problems this winter.

18 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2009

My husband was driving the vehicle when the rear tire blew making the car undrivable. It was towed to a mechanic who found that both of the rear springs had snapped. I was told that had he been traveling at a higher speed he most assuredly would have either been seriously injured or killed. The cost of the repair so far has totaled almost $900 dollars. Ford has acknowledged that they know about this problem and my front springs are also about to snap. Ford stated that the front springs are recalled but the rear are not because there have not been any fatalities yet. I hope that it does not take a death or serious injury to get Ford or the nhsta to make Ford own up to its responsibility.

19 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2009

Ford has a waranty replacement on thier front springs for a Ford Taurus but not on thier back springs, I own a 2001 Ford Taurus with 83,000 miles and the both back springs are broke and it was close to punturing the rear tire, if the front springs break and are coverd but not the backs one is'nt it a safety issue as well.

20 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2009

2001 Ford Taurus with suspension noise while driving. Ford mechanic diagnosed problem as front and rear springs broken on 2/2/2009. Parts have not yet been replaced.

21 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The failure is a broken left rear spring, requiring replacement of both rear springs. The old parts are not available. I would not say that the broken spring in my particular case caused immediate danger as the spring was still in the spring seat, however it is cause to fail a PA state safety inspection, and could have become dangerous if the spring was not replaced. The vehicle had 99,600 miles at the time of the failure. I can't pinpoint any specific events other than almost 100,000 miles of use in the salt belt. It is a common failure on the Taurus, and mine broke later than many others. The front springs (which have not broken on my car) are covered under recall. . . The rears should be as well.

22 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2008

2nd request on behalf of constituents, requesting NHTSA not only recall the 2001 Ford Taurus but reopen a 2007 investigation re this matter, ES have no rec of previous ltr fm sen. Mcconnell but re es11-005500/s/ c. Lieu the consumer stated her brother and his friend died in a car accident, and a third passenger was injured, when the rear spring broke and caused him to loose control of the vehicle.

23 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2008

Went to my local Ford dealer to take care of a recall notice I had received on my 2001 Taurus for broken front springs. While the dealer took care of my front springs they also inspected the rear springs on the car. When they were finished they came out and told me the rear springs are cracked and needed to be replaced but were not covered under the recall. I work in the auto industry dealing with metal parts. I understand the process of heat treating metals and if Ford was having problems with the front springs cracking and breaking due to bad heat treating, the rear springs from the same time period should be suspect and also part of the recall.

24 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

I had my car inspected today and found out both rear springs on the struts were broken. When researching the problem, I've found out this is common in 2001 Taurus sedans. This is a dangerous defect and I don't understand how a recall could be made for the front struts but not the back. A rear tire popping at 73 mph because of a broken spring breaking loose is just as dangerous as a front tire.

25 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2008

Front & rear springs failed on 2001 Ford Taurus & were replaced. Front springs also destroyed struts & were covered under a manufacturer warranty. Rear springs also destroyed shocks but were not covered under warranty. Ford dealer indicated that this failure was "common" on this model year.

26 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2008

Inspection of suspension on my 2001 Ford Taurus by tire shop on 11 oct 08 revealed both rear springs are broken. Internet sites list numerous incidents of tires being punctured by broken springs. I guess not enough people have died in order to force Ford to recall this very dangerous condition? you would think Ford or the news media would inform the public about this potentially fatal defect. I really can't think of a more serious condition that would justify an organization like yours. Thank you dan archer.

27 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2008

While on vacation, driver side rear spring broke, causing driver side rear strut to break. Had to replace both rear springs and struts. Car currently has only 31,000 miles on it.

28 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

Rear springs snapped destroying both tires. Both left and right rear springs and struts and both rear tires had to be replaced.

29 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2008

2001 Ford Taurus. Back (rear) suspension springs broke. Ongoing issue with this make and model. Extremely dangerous as the broken springs can puncture the tire and ultimately cause physical and/or property harm. The front springs had a recall on them related to this issue however, not the rear springs. This is so dangerous and very common according to two different repair shops of this make and model.

30 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

Back springs broke and almost punctured a tire. We had to pay to have the springs replaced on the rear. If everyone was aware of the potential danger with the front springs why weren't the back springs also included in the safety recall? I think this is something someone should look into because this is also a safety issue. It is very unfair to have to pay for something that Ford should have taken care of. My Taurus has less than 75,000 miles on it and I'm wondering what other possible safety issues I have to look forward to.

31 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

As I was backing out of my driveway, I heard a sound from my car's rear end. After I turned around and returned home I smelled burning rubber and noticed pieces of rubber inside the wheel. I removed the wheel and saw that the strut spring had broken and was rubbing the inside sidewall of the tire away. If this had occurred on the highway, it very well could have been fatal. Luckily I was in the neighborhood or my daughter was not driving. This is an extremely severe safety hazard that occurs without warning and will produce an uncontrollable car. I contacted the local Ford dealer and also called Ford's customer service hotline but they will do nothing about this hazard or will they help in the repair. The front springs were under a recall but I didn't know this until one of these failed. Ford replaced the front springs after this happened. From looking at this site, there seems to be a problem with this component.

32 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2008

Noise was noticed coming from rear driver's side tire. Sounded like brake pad sticking. After a couple of miles of driving the tire blew out. When investigating tire failure it was found the spring had broken and punctured the tire. The failure just happened today therefore there has been no resolution. Vehicle will have to be towed to dealership for repairs.

33 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2008

Heard rubbing sound then felt rear tire "pop" and deflate. On removal of rear passenger side tire found suspension spring broke and cause of tire failure. Had car towed to dealership and am having rear springs and shocks replaced as well as destroyed rear tire.

34 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2008

While driving on city streets under normal conditions the right rear coil spring broke. It missed the tire by less than one inch and rubbed against the rim. I called Ford because we had an identical failure with the front springs over the summer, they were a recalled item and were replaced free of charge. Ford informed me that the rear were not covered under a recall. I am repairing the vehicle myself, the cost will be around $150. 00. This cost would be significantly higher if the spring would have hit the tire, and could have possibly caused an accident.

35 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2008

My '01 Taurus ses with 62k was making a loud noise from the rear. Took it for an inspection and found the left rear spring was broken. It scratched the inner side of the tire but did not puncture it. As a consequence and $400 later I had the springs replaced. This car was involved in the front spring shield recall. The repair shop told me that the most common repair on the Taurus/sable and focus is broken rear springs.
