38 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2008

My daughter came home last night and I went to check her car this morning and found a flat tire on the left rear. Pumped it up and heard air leaking out, removed it and found the coil spring sticking out had cut the tire down and punctured it. I replaced the coil and strut as a unit from advance with a monroe which has a 5/8 coil spring, the original from Ford was 1/2". Ford had a recall , campaign # 04v3320000 for the coil springs on the front , why not the rear as well? its apparent they had a problem with the rear as you have 60 complaints before mine. Does it take a death to make them fix the problem? our car only has 42,211 miles on it today when I replaced the strut and tire. We purchased the car from an individual, at the Ford dealers lot, as it had been parked there after body work had been performed and been setting for over a year , it only had 18,000 miles on it 2 years ago. I have the old strut with broken spring, it has a small crack that shows some rust in the edge, and has a ductile fracture clean break with no rust in it. I'm a cat mechanic with some training in failure analysis, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

39 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2007

My wife owns a 2001 Ford Taurus in which the driver's side rear coil spring broke while backing it out of the garage. It had already been taken to the dealership for a recall on the front springs because one of them broke while I was driving it. After contacting the Ford customer assistance center (1-800-392-3673) today, they told me that they don't have a recall on this problem and all costs to repair would be mine. Obviously they have a problem with this model year and they won't stand behind their product. The car currently has 87,400 miles on it. This doesn't seem like a lot considering the type of failure that has occurred again. I also noticed a number of complaints posted on the internet about this problem.

40 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2007

2001 Ford Taurus. Rear springs have broken. Would have punctured a tire, but was able to grind off broken part of spring. Have not repaired spring yet, only have ground off point of spring.

42 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2007

I was parking my car when I heard a loud bang come from the rear of the car. I didn't find anything wrong after looking under the car. Later when I attempted to drive away I heard a scraping noise coming from the rear of the car. I thought it might be the brakes so I had it towed to a repair shop. After the mechanic inspected the vehicle, he told me both rear springs were broken and the scraping noise was the broken left rear spring rubbing on the tire. I was lucky that I wasn't driving otherwise the broken spring would have eventually cut the tire.

43 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2007

Ford dealer mechanic informed us that right rear spring is broken on 2001 Ford Taurus. He advised us that vehicle is unsafe to drive.

44 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

I brought my 2001 Taurus to the dealership after I was told by the tire company that my front springs were bad. I was informed that this was a recall. When I took my car in to have the recalled springs fixed, I was informed that both of my rear springs were broken as well as my rear struts. Why are the rear springs not being recalled when they are obviously defective? when I was unable to authorize the dearlership to complete the repairs due to the immense cost, I had to sign a waiver absolving the dealership of any responsibility if an accident were to occur when I left the dealership. This is obviously a very serious defect that could be very dangerous. Why is Ford not addressing this issue?.

45 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2007

We have a 2001 Ford Taurus that we bought new. Had the front spring shields installed upon receiving recall notice. Front springs are ok so far, but I noticed the rear of the car sat a little low in the garage. I had heard of some spring problems with the Fords, and my son just had the rear springs on his focus replaced recently at his own expense. (he bought the focus new also) I scheduled service at our Ford dealership and they confirmed both rear springs are broken. They did not have them in stock, so rescheduled me for the next day. The struts did not come in, so now I'm rescheduled for next week. Now I don't know if we should drive it or not, as I found out that a lot of tires are being punctured, and I had recently put new tires on. Ford should take care of this. . .

Failure Date: 05/21/2007

47 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2007

I took my car in for recall service 04s17 from Ford, front coil spring shields. The technician came to find out that the rear leaf springs have a crack. This sounds to me that the rear springs are also a problem and should be added to the recall in tandem with the front coil spring defect. He told me that there's a possibility that I can blow out my rear tire, so I need both rear springs replaced. Estimated cost of labor and parts along with an alignment, $460. I'm going to get the work done soon, because of the potential danger of the rear tire blowing out, but it does sound like a manufacturer's defect just like the front coil recall.

48 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2007

2001 Ford Taurus. Both rear springs are broke.

49 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2007

Rear springs broken, recall on front but not rear. I read that some springs broke and punctured tires. If one set of springs is bad wouldn't it be obvious to replace all? what will it take to recall the rear springs? this is obviously defective springs. Why should consumer have to deal with it?????.

50 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2007

Both rear coil springs fractured at the same time, car has 51,000 miles on it. There was a recall on the front springs but not the rear, and now they have broken, seemed very strange, and Ford will not stand behind their product, repair cost over $500.

The rear springs of my Ford Taurus have fractured without any accident or collision. The cost of repair was upwards of $300. In addition to that the rear tires have undergone excessive wear due to broken springs. Currently the recall is only applicable to front springs, but I strongly recommend that it should be extended to rear springs also.

Car was not handling well and there was a scraping noise coming from somewhere in the rear. Car was taken to dealer to determine problem. Dealer replaced broken right rear coil spring, seats & brackets, and a bent rear sway bar link (approximately $230 charged for the repair). About 2 weeks later (6-16-2006), the car was taken in again since it was still not handling well. The right rear strut and mount were replaced (approximately $264 charged for this repair). This problem seemed related to the repair performed on 6-1-2006. The possibility of a recall for this problem was investigated since the front coil spring recall had been done last December and it was found that the fractured rear coil spring had happened many time before although no recall had yet been made.

60 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2006

Driving to work and heard a load rubbing sound in the right rear spring/tire. What alerted me to get this taken care of was the burning smell of rubber and the loud rubbing noise. I contacted the dealership that I purchased my vehicle from because I purchased an extended warranty. Brought it in and was informed that the rear right side spring was busted and it gouged my tire. If I would have drove just a bit more, it could have blown.

67 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2006

I had the front driver side coil spring fail and as I took the car into the dealer to have the front springs replaced under the recall, the dealer informed me that the left rear coil spring was broken. Fortunately, the fracture did not result in an accident. However, common sense would state that if the front coils failed, the rear coils also would exhibit the same corrosion/failure problem since the springs, more than likely, came from the same vendor for Ford. Ford should be held accountable for replacement of all four (4) coil springs.

68 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2006

Left rear spring broke on my 2001 Ford Taurus. Took it to my dealer to fix it and I had to pay for it. It almost blew out my tire ,which would have caused me to crash. I hear that Ford may be having a recall on the rear springs on the 2000 and 2001 Taurus. However, I do not feel I should have paid, to have the spring fixed and I called Ford about it,they told me that I had to pay for it. I believe that there is a defect in the springs. I'm e-mailing this in hopes that Ford will recall the springs so I can get my money back on the repair. Unless they make it right with me, I will not buy another Ford product!!.

69 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2006

Rear spring on 2001 Taurus snapped due to corrosion. Replaced both springs and tire that was damaged due to spring failure. Spring cut tire while backing out of a parking space.

70 Rear Suspension Springs problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2006

I entered my car one morning and started backing out of the garage and I heard a metal grinding sound from the right rear side. While driving to work I noticed the car seemed to be riding lower on the right rear side. A week or so later I took the car into a Ford dealership and was told the right rear spring and both struts needed to be replaced. He said the broken spring was gouging a hole in my tire. The right rear strut was leaking and needed to be replaced, but he said I would to have both replaced for the ride to be even. Additionally, he said I would need to have an alignment done. I did not have the work performed on my car as the dealer was asking over $700 for the repairs. I called for other estimates. I pulled the tire off at home and did find the spring was broker and causing a gouge to be dug into my 1 year old tire just an inch below the top of the tire and about 1/4 inch deep. I have yet to speak to Ford about the problem.
