Rear coil spring on my 2001 Ford Taurus broke.
2001 Ford Taurus has a broken rear coil spring. I understand that the front coil springs are covered under an extended recall due to a corrosion/high failure rate issue. Why aren't the rear coil springs covered by this recall?.
A noise from the rear of the vehicle lead me to look and find my rear coil springs on both sides are broken. I understand there is a recall on the fronts, but not the rears, which makes no sense. From other complaints I've read, I'm pretty lucky. Mine broke near the base, and caused no further damage, but many apparently break in the middle and destroy the tire. Just about every Taurus I see sags in the back. I'm sure there are a lot more out there that people are driving on and have no idea.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the rear driver's side coil spring broke from the vehicle. He took his vehicle in for a routine oil change and they confirmed the failure. The mechanic replaced the rear coil springs at the cost of $1,200. The contact called the Ford manufacturer and they stated that they do not cover the rear springs of the vehicle, only the front springs. The failure mileage was 32,000. I am sending this on behalf of my father who does not have internet access. He owns a 2001 Ford Taurus that is primarily driven by my mother and only has 26000 miles on it. A few days ago when he was cleaning out his garage he found a piece of metal on floor which he believed was from the car. After taking the vehicle to his local mechanic he was informed that the rear coil spring was broken and needed replaced. After doing some research on your website I found that there is a recall on the front springs but not the rear. I also checked with the dealer where the car was purchased and was told the same thing about the recall for the front but not the rear. I asked the dealer why there would not be a recall for the rear and according to him he thinks there should be but Ford has not released one as of yet. Both rear springs and swag end links had to be replaced the correct the issue at a cost of about $500. This whole situation is a little disheartening since the vehicle has such low mileage, is a 1 owner, very well maintained and has been garage kept since it was new.
My passenger side rear coil spring broke. Luckily I found the broken piece in my driveway. Took it to midas and received a quote to replace both rear springs at a cost of $900.
2001 Ford Taurus, 112,000 miles. Driving about 35 mph on highway interchange, heard loud bang and car pulled left and I gained control and stopped. Found left front coil spring broke puncturing left tire. Took car to dealership for repair. Ford will cover cost of front springs replacement. Dealership called and said right spring was broken also and transmission pan was also punctured from broken spring and needed replaced. Ford will not cover cost to pay for punctured tire or transmission pan plus fluid. Tire had around 300 mile on it. Ford garage called back and said rear springs were also broken and not covered under recall from Ford. Shouldn't rear springs be covered also since breakage was result of corrosion problem like the front springs? also, shouldn't the collateral damage to the tire and transmission be covered also? never received any form of notification relating to this recall. But I had receive other recall for wiring problems.
Broken coil springs in front and rear of vehicle.
I noticed that after installing four brand new tires on my 2001 Ford Taurus, that the vehicle pulled to the right dramatically while driving. The alignment was just done as well. I also noticed that the rear of the vehicle sat extremely low. Further investigation found that the rear coil spring on the right side had snapped at the base of strut. Front springs have a recall, why not the front. I am aware of the problems on this subject as I am formerly a service advisor for Ford. This is an all too common problem and does pose a safety problem!!!! this is true as the vehicle fails nysi and makes vehicle undriveable. Ford will not repair, yet there are hundreds, if not thousands of the same exact concern. My vehicle is in perfect operating condition and cared for well. This should not happen! apparently until someone dies, Ford and the government will not do anything about this. My 2001 impala and my 2002 cavalier both had well over 100k, never had this problem and they were in the salt states their entire operating lives!! there must be something done now please. I am forced to repair the vehicle at my own cost for something that is well known by the government and Ford.
Rear coil springs break! I remember the recall for front coil springs. But why Ford doesn't recall rear as they break as often as the front ones??.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for repair service. The technician observed that the rear coil spring failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 69,000. Updated 020209 updated 02/03/09.
Right rear coil spring broke. The car has only 52,000 miles on it. If I hadn't noticed a piece of the coil spring on my garage floor, who knows what may have happened. This is my wife's car. We just had new tires and a four wheel alignment a month before the spring broke.
2001 Ford Taurus with 69,000 miles has a broken rear coil spring. There is a problem with the front coils which Ford will fix no charge under 04m04 customer satisfaction guarantee but it does not cover the rear springs. In the event of the back spring working it's way to the tire there has been rear tire blowouts with extensive damage to the vehicle itself and a danger to the driver and passengers. At this time my mother was informed that this was being looked into as a mandatory recall. I feel since they have had problems with the front and have acknowledged the defect that there is also a problem with the rear springs of those same years. Parts required to correct problem are new coils both sides. We took it to the dealership and the service manager said he thinks there should be a mandatory recall but he did not have the authority to make that decision and referred me to you. The cost to my mother which is on a fixed budget is 600. 00 and she cannot afford it. The service manger advised her to get it fixed before it caused numerous problems which would not be covered even though the damage occurred from the broken coil spring. At this time there has not been any dangerous occurrences but there are a possibility of them happening at any time. Please look closer at this dangerous situation and make it mandatory to have Ford motor company fix this problem. Thank you brad farrow.

We have a 2001 Ford Taurus that has a broken coil spring in rear of the car. The fractured piece of the spring is right beside the tire in the rear of the car. In addition to this danger when the spring broke it allowed the back of the car to set so far down that you can not even place 1 finger between the top of the tire and the fender weld now. The car would consistantly rub the tires if we try to drive it. I have called Ford motor on several occasions about this problem and they told me that they had not had any other complaints about rear spring breakage so there was nothing they could do for me. Now however after reading this website I see that I am in a class of owners with the same problems - I do live in ohio which after reading more on your site I realize that we are in the area that this problem seems to be happening to alot. After speaking to a local repair shop about my problems I was shocked to find out that rear coil spring breakage on these Taurus's is one of the most seen problems in his shop. Please continue your investigation - if it makes Ford fix these problems and 1 life is saved - it would be worth all of the complaining and nagging we have had to do to get them to step up and repair their defective parts.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact's vehicle did not pass state inspection because both rear coil springs failed. He is in the process of notifying an authorized dealer and the manufacturer to determine the cause of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 61,000. Updated 10/16/08 updated 10/20/08.
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus ses sdn. I looked on Fords web site for recalls and to my surprise there where none for rear suspension coil springs, this is the 4th coil spring that has broken on this car and I have only had the car for 4 years. I just drive to and from work with this many breaks there has to be some kind of engineering or parts defect, this should not even be happening , I could see it if I hauled stuff in the car over a period of time again I just drive. I see you have done an investigation and closed your case last year. I tell you that there are alot of other one's that had to been breaking I am sure that none of my 4 have reached your complaints or any other complaints. I am partially disabled and I can not afford $300 - $400 dollar car bills to get this fixed every time it breaks down. . Ron paul.
2001 Ford Taurus rear coil springs broke on both sides. Very common complaint on this car although Ford won't issue a recall. They have issued a recall for the front coil springs but refuse to do the same for the rear.
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus ses. About 5 months ago (~90 k miles) my front passenger side spring broke. The spring was replaced under recall. Yesterday (~103 k miles), I found the rear driver side coil spring also cracked open and hanging very near to the tire. This car drives 98% on I-94 at a speed of 75mph. Thank god the broken spring did not pop my tire open. Dealer checked and found both the rear springs broken. A $385 estimate is given for just replacing the spring (not the struts). I checked on the internet and found this is a very common problem in Taurus. Ford should come forward and put a recall on the rear springs too.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that both rear coil springs fractured. One of the rear corners of the vehicle was leaning extremely low. Through online research, he discovered various complaints for the same issue from other consumers. The spring also became dislodged from its normal position. He has not taken the vehicle to the dealer; however, the manufacturer stated that there was no recall on the rear springs and offered no assistance. The current mileage was 129,735 and failure mileage was approximately 129,600.
Rear coil spring broke and nearly cut the tire.
Both rear coil springs on our 2001 Ford Taurus sel rusted through and broke. The broken coil springs then fell down past the spring seat and the jagged, broken edge of the springs cut the inner side wall of both rear tires. The right rear tire blew out as a result of this while we were traveling 35 miles per hour. Both rear tires needed to be replaced. Fortunately no one was injured. This is a safety hazard! if this would have happened at highway speed or while in a curve, this could have been a terrible accident! please make Ford install coil spring seat extensions and new coil springs on the rear of these cars to prevent the coil springs from falling into the tire area, this was done on the front coil springs for this car and should also be done on the rear before someone gets terribly injured or killed! please do not wait until then to do something! this could be prevented! I am also mailing you a letter describing this problem with photos of the tires, springs, etc. Updated 09/08/08.
Vehicle (2001 Ford Taurus se) failed safety inspection because both rear coil springs are. Fortunately, there was no accident involved because this problem was caught during a safety inspection.
The events leading up to the failure were not fatal and there wasn't a crash. I was driving and began to hear a rubbing noise in the back tire of my car. When I took the wheel off to inspect the damage the rear coil spring had broke and was rubbing a groove into my tire. I then had to replace both rear springs and both rear tires. I recently took my car into have the rear brakes replaced and was told the springs were once again broken and had to be replaced. I'm have now paid close to $1000 on faulty spring and repair.
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus and the rear coil springs are broken. Have seen many complaints about this and there should be a recall on this.
Daughter was driving car and heard funny rattling noise in front end when going over bumps. I checked out the front end and found the front driver's side coil spring was broken. While getting that fixed the driver's side rear coil spring was found to be broken also!.
Rear suspension coils snapped in half requiring a complete replace of rear suspension.
I was getting a routine oil change when the repair man said that both of my rear coil springs were broken on my '01 Ford Taurus. He mentioned that a broken rear coil spring can puncture tires and lead to accidents. He further explained that it would cost roughly $1400 to replace the coil springs and shocks and all the fittings etc. . I had never heard this severe of a problem with a vehicle that has less than 100k. I further did research on the issue to find thousands of complaints and the best that Ford will say about it is, "it has not caused any serious accidents. " I cannot believe that we have to wait for someone to be seriously injured or worse before a company owns up to the problem and takes care of it. I will surely not buy another Ford vehicle if this is the way they do business.
Rear coil springs have broken causing damage to tire. Extremely hazardous.
Rear coil spring of my 2001 Ford Taurus has broken and making contact with the tire. The tire is damaged all around it,and the car was making noise when I checked it myself I found out that its the spring that is broken, know I have to fix it and buy a new tire, because the tire is badly damaged ,if I did not check it ,it could have been a probable accident due the tire puncture. I think Ford has to pay for it.
Rear coil spring broke on right rear 2001 Taurus damaging tire.
