The contact owns a 1998 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that he was riding in the vehicle as a passenger in the front seat when the vehicle was involved in a crash. The passenger's front seat belt buckle attaching stud failed and he was not properly restrained during the crash and sustained unknown injuries. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 98v198000 (seat belts: front: anchorage) that was issued in 1998 but he as unable to confirm if the vehicle was included in the recall. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000 and the current was unknown.

2 Front Seat Belt Anchorage problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

: the contact stated the front passenger seat belt intermittently will not retract or it will lock before it is fastened into the buckle assembly. There is a NHTSA recall, # 99v250000 regarding the seatbelts front: anchorage. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.

3 Front Seat Belt Anchorage problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

The consumer was having a problem with the seat belt. The consumer purchased the vehicle used and discovered that the vehicle had been recalled for a seat belt problem. The dealer told the consumer that the vehicle identification number did not qualify for the recall. The seat belt would not retract and or come out enough to buckle it. Both rear seat belts are inoperative and need to be replaced. Neither belt would retract back into spool mechanism. Both rear belts have had a history of folding and twisting. Which made use of the belts extremely difficult at times. Belts have experienced normal use only. Ford will not replace the belts for free because they are beyond the warranty period. Dt.

The left rear seatbelt became stuck and could not be released or used, the consumer believed this to be an unusual failure since the rear seats are rarely occupied, it took two visits to repair the defect at a considerable cost to the consumer, soon after this repair the right rear seatbelt became stuck and could not be used. Consumer discovered that the right rear seat belt would not retract, the dealer informed consumer that a new seat belt would need to be ordered, when consumer arrived home it was discovered that the seat belt still did not work, vehicle was taken back to dealer in which the seat belt was fixed the same day, consumer is questioning how the correction was made without ordering another seatbelt in which the first seat took two days to arrive.

Seatbelts do not retract correctly and lockup at inappropriate times. Dealer and Ford motor were contacted and advised us that this was not covered under warranty. Can you believe that??? this vehicle was purchased used with the extended warranty (through travelers) at additional cost -- safety equipment is not covered. We're screwed. Estimate of over $400 to correct by dealer. Presently looking at aftermarket alternatives to replace defective Ford components. Not certain whether "genuine" Ford parts will correct the problem as they may have the same net result.
