The contact owns a 1999 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the rear seat belt retractors have malfunctioned. The seat belts will not pull out to be used, therefore she cannot restrain anyone in the rear seats. Both seat belts failed within one month of each other. She stated that the rear seats are rarely used, therefore the failure could not have been caused by excessive or improper use. The dealer stated that she is beyond the extended warranty for the belts and the repair would cost $476. The dealer also stated that her VIN was not included in recall number 99v250000 (seat belts:front:anchorage). The failure mileage was 77,000 and current mileage was 78,000.

Rear passenger seat 3-pount safety belt failure. Belt locked and would not retract and function as a usable safety device. The replacement cost was $69. 07 for the belt and $145. 00 labor. This is the second failure. In 2004, the rear driver seat 3-point belt also failed and had to be replaced.
Three rear seat belts did not retract . This happened in the last 3 weeks. Taken vehicle to dealer to have this problem fixed, cost of this repair will be close to $500. 00. Spoke to manufacturer, and they said no recall, they cou;dn't help.

Ford Taurus 1999, both rear seat belts seized up. The consumer has replaced both rear seat belts, the cause was the plastic spool that the seat belt wrapped around had cracked and broke into pieces, the pieces became jammed in the seat belts as they were retracted or extended. The hub of the spool that the seat belt wrapped around was also severely cracked in many places .
1. Normal operation of vehicle. 2. Rear seat belt retraction mechanisms fail. Replaced 1, unit failed again. Now neither of the 2 units work. Unable to use the vehicle with more than 2 passengers. 3. 1 part replaced, failed again within 1 year.
Rear seatbelt retractors nonfunctional. Belt is out does not retract or adjust back in. This has happened three times to this car. Once when first purchased, fixed at no cost. Last year ,one retractor replaced at my expense. Now again.
Rewind spring on seat belt became undone from its anchor, rendering seat belt useless. The problem happened with the rear seat belt.
The rear lap/shoulder seatbelts on both sides do not retract correctly. One stopped retracting completely, and the other intermittently, causing them to be unsafe and unusable. I found NHTSA safety recall #99v250000 for a similar problem, which I brought to the attention of the dealer and manufacturer, but they said that it did not cover my specific vehicle. So, replacing this defective part becomes my responsibility.
Left rear seatbelt would not retract at all. Right rear seatbelt was apparently ok. Took car in for inspection at 57,945 miles. Was told that both seatbelts do not work and need to be replaced. As stated, right side one was fine until they "tested" it, now they claim it will not retract either. Car has extended warranty (although we were not told that it did not cover safety items) but safety items are apparently only covered 50,000/5 yrs (we are within the 5 year limit). I am aware that there is a Ford technical service bulletin 99v-250 for seatbelts, but I cannot access further info as it is on Ford's internal website. I am also under the impression that other Taurus model years have been recalled for seatbelts. Although my extended warranty is still in effect, I seem to have no recourse, and I find it odd that the right seatbelt failed at the dealer during inspection. Service provider is burns Ford of huntington, NY. Thank you for your attetion to this item.

The rear seat belts did not retract. The dealership repaired the seat belt four times, but the problem continued.
Consumer stated that she strapped a child in a seat belt in the rear of vehicle. Later on the child became tangled in the seat belt, and each time an attempt was made to release the child from the seat belt, the seat belt got tighter and tighter. The seat belt was so tight on the child's stomach that she had to flag down another motorist, and get him to cut the seat belt from around the child. The child was only 8 years old. This encounter left black and blue marks on the child.

Consumer complained about passenger's side seat belt. The seat belt will not retract properly when release. It some how, get tangled and twisted when the belt goes back into the retractor. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and had the seat belt serviced. However, the problem recurred. . . . . . . Consumer had the rea rseat belts repaired at $54. 00. Claimed that deaker should have replaced them at no cost to consumer. It was bad from the beginning, and consumer insisted that dealer inially promised to replace them at no cost to consumer. Has a statement to that effect.
The right (passenger) rear seat belt of my 2000 Ford Taurus recently failed and is no longer usable. For no apparent reason, this seat belt has locked in place and will neither unwind or retract. It would seem that the internal rotor that regulates the seat belt's length has gotten stuck. The belt moves about 1/2 inch before firmly locking. It will not retract from this position and I cannot get it to reset after several days of trying. Since I am just past a safety warranty of 50,000 miles, I am told a repair job to replace this belt will cost around $500.
Passenger safety belt, in back seat will not retract. Went to my Ford dealer to have them replace it under my extended warranty, but they said "normal". This belt never retracts like the others and often the door gets shut on it. Discovered later that there was a recall for these back seat belts, but the belt's date of manufacture not in the range for the recall.
I own a 1998 Ford Taurus wagon. The rear seatbelts do not work. I can not get them to pull out at all. For that matter, I can not buckle my child in. Both sides are affected. The center buckle doesn't have an extracting belt so that is the only usable seat belt in the rear. I have to do something about this because I have to transport children in car seats. The cover was removed in attempt to fix these and I am still unable to get them to work.

Consumer noticed that the rear passenger side seat belt did not retract properly. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the seat belt unit needed to be replaced, and replaced it three times. However, the problem recurred.
Rear seat belts in car locked and were unusable. This happened with both shoulder belts in the rear, and was a big concern for me since the car was purchased for transporting childtrn. .
Rear middle seat belt strap on 1998 Ford Taurus sedan was not secured by minor occupant while exiting vehicle. Belt was outside vehicle when vehicle started moving and was run over by vehicle rear tires causing rear wheel to lock and skid on public street.
In a 1999 Ford Taurus se, my 6 year old son became trapped in a seat belt that was not even buckled. After arriving home at 9 p. M. My son had just unbuckled his seat belt when somehow he pulled the seat belt over him and the seat belt wrapped around him and it was around his waist and back. The seat belt just kept getting tighter on him and would not release just like a cowboys lasoe. Any slack I could get was going up in the shoulder restraint. The belt would not give me any slack. This was in the rear seat on the drivers side. After it got so tight that my son was crying in pain and panic, I finally had to cut the seat belt to free my son. My complaint is that this should have never happened. Why is there no slack given on the seat belt especially in a parked car. The belt should not keep locking and taking up slack. This is an unseen danger lurking that could entrap a child. The belt will entrap a child without being secured in the buckle. Beware!!.
Consumer called complaining about having problems with rear driver's side seat belts. Also, stated that somebody was in the back seat and vehicle was involved in a colision and the seat belt broke. Manufacture was not contacted.
My childrens safety. We purchased a new 2000 Ford Taurus station wagon. We wanted this to be our family vehicle for atleast 5 years until paid off! we relied on the safety & quality of Ford. We have 3 young children 11,9 & 4 years. All petite girls. Well now we have major safety problems. . . Our 4 year old will be out growing car seat. The station wagons only have 2 shoulder straps & 3 lap belts in the rear seat. So I guess one of our children will be in the danger seat rear middle only lap belt. So we have this problem before the new booster seat law goes into effect. With the new law all booster seats require shoulder straps so we still have one in the danger seat. I am working on this Ford is not replying they say my expectations are too high & they can no longer assist me. We are really in a bad position here. The Ford Taurus sedans 2000 models have 3 shoulder straps in rear seat. If we did not have 3 children we would not have a station wagon. We thought this was a family vehicle. We still have 3 more years to pay on this & we need a van for safety for our children! I have called Ford, wrote letters to Ford, had news channels on this I want something done. We are loyal Ford customers were I shoudl say. Safety is more of an issue now. We had a 1994 Ford Taurus wagon it was totalled we were stopped hit in the rear 5 car pile up. It was terrible!! we just paid that car off. 94 with 38,000 miles great condition we wanted to go without car payment. We got 5 more years of payments now this. Also I have researched this Feb 2002 manufactures were to be fixing this well 2003 staiton wagon still only 2 shoulder straps in rear seat.
Rear seatbelt difficult to latch wtih child seat / booster seat present. When using a child safety seat with build in straps in combination with the center rear seat lapbelt with optional stud mounted on strap for shoulder belt attachment, this flaw is not that evident. Although, as the child progresses into the booster seat stage and has outgrown the weight of the child seat safety staps, the use of a booster seat in the center rear with combination lap belt becomes very difficult to latch. The act of latching the seatbelt can range from first try to 20 or 30 attempts before it latches. Multiple female seat belt recepticles where used, same effect on all. It appears that the deatchable should belt assembly has a rather large metal buckle that has such a large area that it prevents the entire assemble from allowing enough of the seat belt slot to enter the receptible for the evident click. If car is not taken, the car seat may inadvertantly be left unbelted if the click is not heard. Once the buckle does perform the "click" it appears to be secure, but as a driver I constantly worry about the integrity of that belt assembly. This problem appear to show more often during colder winter months. 40f and below.
Consumer noticed the back system seat belts lap do not retract after releasing buckets. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information. Mr.
Consumer stated that all rear seat belts intermittently do not function properly. The belts will curl up and get stuck in the retracted position. Also, when unbuckling after use belts will not retract. Dealer was unable to duplicate or determine cause of problem.
The rear seat belts have been a problem for some time . Now the rear right does not work at all . I was given a price of 250. -270-. ,for two new seatbelts. I feel this is a safety issue and need to no if I have any legal rights.

The rear middle seat belt retractor on my 2000 Taurus has failed making the rear middle seat usuable only without a seat belt. The seat belt itself retracted all the way back into the mechanism but will not retract back out. This is the second such failure of the rear seat belt I've experienced. Previously, the rear passenger side seat belt got stuck in a similar fashion. This car is becoming increasing unsafe and I am loosing confidence in its other highly touted safety features.
A spring broke within the rear seat belt, causing it not to retract, and does not operate properly.
The rear seat belt on the passenger side was inoperative and was stuck in the retractor.
