The contact owns a 2002 Ford Taurus. While making a turn at 30 mph, a loud banging and grinding noise was heard from the rear driver side. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, removed the rear driver side tire, and noticed that the coil spring was fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,500.

When backing up from being parked, the front drivers side tire exploded and the front left corner of the car dropped. The cause was a broken coil spring which punctured my new tire. 74k miles. I am upset that the NHTSA has investigated this problem that has been occurring for 15 years with Ford Taurus' vintage 2000 through 2005 and concluded its not a safety issue because there have been "no serious injuries or deaths". Previously I had three spring failures on another (2001) Taurus. I had a front spring break and had both front springs replaced. One of the replacement springs broke two years later. Both failures caused tire failures. Shortly before getting rid of the 2001taurus, I noticed a rear spring had failed, but did not damage the tire. I do expect a few "serious injuries or deaths" to occur in the future because of this serious safety issue. It's too bad some of us will have to sacrifice our lives or limbs for the good of the rest of us. If such a dreadful thing happens, I feel NHTSA may be equally liable with Ford for wrongful death lawsuits for not requiring Ford to address this safety issue. In their investigation, NHTSA also mentions the relatively small number of complaints on this topic. That is because consumers do not know about filing a complaint with the NHTSA. I advise the NHTSA to request the number of replacement parts from Ford along with parts suppliers such as advance and autozone. I would estimate millions of springs have been replaced for just the 2002 and 2003 model years. I'd bet my craft beer money on it. Btw, the true cause of failure is that road dirt and salt causes the ball bearings in the mount to bind which in turn restricts the springs free movement. The spring does not rust, the binding of the ball bearings against the spring surface causes the failure. Poor design causing a very dangerous situation if driving at highway speed.

My 2002 Ford Taurus has a broken rear coil spring. I've been told by several mechanics that this is a safety issue because if the spring pops off it could shred my tire while I'm driving. The Ford Taurus 1999-2001 has been recalled for this same issue, but the 2002 has not been. I have noticed several complaints online from other 2002 Taurus owners, that have also had the rear coil spring break on their '02 Taurus, and many of them experienced potentially dangerous situations when theirs broke. Luckily my mechanic told me about this issue so that I didn't have to experience what so many other people had by having my wheel shredded or ripped off while driving. This is a safety issue and there's no reason the '02 shouldn't be recalled along with the earlier models that have the same problem.

Brought car in for inspection and the rear coil spring fractures almost slicing the tire. Why is this not a recall as the number of complaints are quite enormous. Plus this is dangerous and a life could be lost!.

I own a 2004 Ford Taurus. The left rear tire went flat while parked. While changing the left rear tire, I noticed that the coil spring bottom plate had fractured and let the spring hit the tire. The sharp point of the spring end punctured the tire, causing it to go flat. I saw that an identical complaint was entered into this web site just a couple of weeks ago. This vehicle model may have a time-based stress failure in this component, since the mileage in the other complaint was considerably lower.

Took car to tire shop for wheel alignment. Shop called to us that right rear spring broke at top of coil near the rubber damper. No accident has ever occurred with this vehicle. Told by shop both rear springs must be replaced for safety purposes. Shop and local napa store confirmed that this problem is rampant on older Ford Taurus models. Found online that 99-01 Ford Taurus has already been recalled for this issue, but not 2002 model. Spoke with Ford today and put them on notice about this problem.

Minnesota: front drivers side coil spring broke and punctured tire while traveling at approx. 15 mph. Replaced both front coil spring, strut assemblies. Cost: $1183. 20 included alignment + new tire install + balancing. About 4 months later right rear coil spring broke. $cost not known at this time.

I was told that my Taurus' rear coil springs were broken and could puncture my tire. After noticing that my car was very low in the rear, I took it in to get an estimate. To just fix the back it would be around $800, which is ridiculous for what my car is worth. It is 10 years old and has numerous other problems. After doing some research, I found that this is a common problem in Ford cars, and a big problem in Taurus'. So much that there was a recall on previous years, but not on the 2002. I have read numerous complaints from other 2002 Taurus owners about the same problem, but no remedy from the company. If this is a common problem, why not fix it in all models it affects? I would rather not die in a car crash in order to get my point across to the company about this ongoing problem. Regardless of the numerous electrical problems I have had prior, I still considered getting another Ford when it was time to buy a new car. However, with this fiasco, I am now absolutely certain I will never buy another Ford again, and never positively comment on Ford cars.

Brought my car in for an oil change and the mechanic informed me that both of my rear coil springs are broken. Not sure when this happened but notice a couple of weeks earlier that the back end of the car was sagging.

On approximately 01-27-12 we noticed vehicle was not riding smoothly. Vehicle was brought to Ford agency on 02-06-12 where vehicle was originally purchased on 10-11-02. This current report is preceded by our odi number 10260740 filed on 03-04-09 reporting failure of our front end coil springs replaced at a cost of $617. 71.

Car acted exactly as described in many other complaints here, sudden loss of power, high engine rev and an inability of the car to work in any gear. Had the car towed to my mechanic and was then told that not only did the transmission need to be rebuilt but I also had a rear coil spring that now was broken. Have purchased many Ford vehicles but this is enough to make you look at a different manufacturer.

Noticed grinding/rubbing noise while driving; noise varied with speed, turning and braking. Observed rubber residue in left rear wheel, on wheel well. Removed wheel, discovered coil spring rusted and dislodged from lower support and was shaving the tire. Loss of tread observed. Coil spring was subsequently cut to remove impacting area and will be replaced. No injuries. Ford has issued a recall on similar models in similar years for the front coil spring; internet reports indicate that the problem may not be limited to the parts already recalled by Ford. The recall may need to be expanded to cover the rear springs as well. Upon replacement, will keep broken part and request servicer to submit information to NHTSA as well.

Car was receiving safety inspection and was noticed that rear coil spring was broke . Both rear struts replaced at that time 1-4-10, 119,500 miles. The front driver spring also broke while driving leaving parts on the road on 5-27-11, 139,123 miles. Both front stuts were replaced at that time.

I was driving to work when I heard a large klunk in the back of my car. I assumed that it was just me hitting a branch. The sound continued, but I wasn't that far from work so I kept driving. My car started to shake severely and I had to fight to keep the steering straight, so I immediately went and pulled over at a gas station where I discovered a severe flat. I had my car towed to the car repair shop, where I work, to have the tire replaced. They showed me that the rear coil spring had punctured and dug a gouge along a third of the tire. It was very scary to see how badly the tire was damaged. I looked online and have seen similar complaints and wonder why someone hasn't done anything about this.

Was told by Ford dealer both front and rear coil springs on drivers side were broke on my 2003 Ford Taurus. Found out this is a ongoing problem that Ford has with no recall. Bought this car new and now I have only 71,000 miles . Paid 1354. 12 to have car repaired and im very unhappy with Ford over this. Ford should make good for this repair.

2003 Taurus s/w left front and right rear coil springs broken at 103,000 miles. Found under routine inspection. No tire damage, no crash fortunately.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus and about two weeks ago I was getting into the car and sat down when I heard a loud metal pop or bang, I got out and looked around and under the car and did not see anything, but I had noticed if I ran over a slight bump in the road I would hear a clunk at the rear driverside wheel area so today I heard it again and when I got home I looked under the rear driverside wheel well and low and behold I have a broken coil spring so I am in the process of getting it replaced and I will request to have the part returned to me as proof of the problem so if and when Ford does a recall on this I can be reimbursed. .
