1 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 02/24/2017

I was driving and hear a popping noise at the rear of the car going over bumps in the road. More so without weight in the back and if rocking side to side on uneven roads. Took to dealer on next available appointment and was told driver side rear spring broken. Had it repaired the next day at my own expense. I was told it was unsafe to drive it the way it was. This I know, because I had a 1995 Ford Taurus that the front passenger spring broke and rubbed a groove into my tire while I was driving under 15 miles per hour. There have been many recalls from Ford and I did not receive most of them. I've lived in the same place for 13 yrs before I bought a home and have been here 11 yrs. My 1995 was kept out side and my 2008 has been garage kept since bought brand new. The 1995 was a year old when I bought it. This seems to be an ongoing problem with the Tauruses. Same driver, 2 different yrs, housed differently and broken springs. Something needs to be done.

2 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 07/02/2015

I noticed the rear of the car was low. Found the problem to be two broken springs at the rear. I found there was a recall up until 2001 but not for 2002. I feel this is wrong since the company is still using the same springs that were under recall. This problem still exists with the same potential outcomes. I was fortunate.

Failure Date: 05/15/2015

On 5 15 2015, 2001 Ford Taurus with 32k miles was taken in for an alignment at a local auto repair business. Mechanic observed the rear drivers side spring was broken and had damaged the tire. After further research, this is a common defect for this vehicle and year. There is a NHTSA recall for the front springs for vehicles in specific states, however recall does not apply to rear springs or suspension as of may 2015. On NHTSA safety complaint website, documentation has been submitted indicating at least two deaths have been linked to the failure of the rear springs.

4 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/17/2014

While driving my 2003 Ford Taurus around a sharp turn the passenger front tire exploded . While trying to change tire to spare it was noticed that the cause of the explosion was a broken spring sticking in the sidewall . I had it replaced . A few months later I saw a piece of a spring in my driveway , when I looked at my car I found the piece of spring came from the drivers side of the Taurus . Then later that year at state inspection the mechanic found a rear spring broke . I had both rear springs replaced . All four springs replaced at my own cost.

11 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/31/2011

2001 Ford Taurus ses left front spring snapped. This was discovered at ~95,000 miles and 10 weeks after the Ford extended recall program expired. The end of the spring was sitting in the small well at the bottom of the spring and the broken end was very rusty. About 3" snapped off the top end of the spring. Online research indicates this is a very common problem and many people report that the spring punctures a tire and causes suspension and frame damage. I will need to have the springs, along with the struts, bushings, etc. Replaced. Both of my rear springs were also broken and were replaced (at my own expense) in may, 2010.

12 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

Drove the car normally, and it does have some mileage on it, but upon reading online I see that this is a very common failure. Failure: rear strut springs cracking or breaking into multiple pieces. I can see where parts where out, but they should not break. Rear spring broke and damaged tire (sidewall). If I had been going faster, say highway speeds this could have resulted in a pretty significant accident. I was lucky. There is clearly a defect with such a high number of these springs breaking. Thanks lane.

13 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 02/13/2011

Driving at approximately 10 mph, slowed to turn left and heard a pop from the passenger rear side, followed by a grinding noise. Proceeded another block to the home driveway, checked vehicle and found that the passenger side rear spring had broken and was eating the inside sidewall of the tire. Checked online and found numerous complaints. Checked this site and found numerous complaints and a NHTSA investigation, for both front and rear springs breaking on the same model year Taurus. Contacted the Ford dealership and Ford corporate and was told there was no recall and said they would not assist in paying for the repair and accepted no responsibility for the problem. Had the vehicle repaired, and tire replaced at our expense. During the repair, also found the driver side rear spring was bad, but had not completely fractured. Also replaced the spring on the driver's side. This car has only 47700 miles, has been well cared for and has never pulled a trailer or carried any type of load. Had just left the interstate moments before the spring broke. Had the spring broken at 70 mph, destroying the tire, the resulting damage could have been catastrophic and injuries may have occurred.

14 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 01/15/2011

Both rear springs on my 02 Ford Taurus snapped and broke. Ford will not pay for any repair costs. I've heard that this is a common problem on Tauruses/sables, but Ford is not doing anything. Only front springs were recalled thru the 01 models. This is dangerous as the broken spring may pierce the tire and lead to tire failure as you're driving the car!! they both had to be replaced at a cost of over $500. I have a low income job and can't afford it but had to be done so I could drive my car to my job.

15 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Ford has recalled the front suspension springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus 80000 miles. But my rear spring fractured and nearly caused an accident with my four children in the car. I feel if the front springs are faulty then the backs are just as dangerous!!.

16 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

Rear springs were found broken when having the oil changed. Broken spring could puncture rear tires, causing loss of control of vehicle. Had to replace broken rear springs, old parts are available.

17 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

Both rear springs on vehicle broke and caused springs to slip off of lower spring perch. Sharp broken end of left rear spring came within 0. 25 inches of contacting tire. Sharp end of spring came very close to puncturing tire. No particular event caused this failure. Don't know exactly when it happened. I just noticed the rear end of the car was sitting lower than usual. Car still drove fine. Took car to local Ford dealer. They replaced both rear springs and struts at my cost of approximately $700. Old parts kept by Ford dealer.

18 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/28/2010

Front and rear springs on 2003 Ford Taurus fractured. The front spring fractured while sitting in the driveway and wrapped itself around the brake lines and hit the tire. Had this happened while driving, the result would have been a catastrophic accident caused by total loss of control and braking. Both rear springs fractured on an unknown date but fractured at the bottom without total failure.

19 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/22/2010

Ford Taurus 2003 rear coil spring broken. Caused rubbing on tire on same side which wore a deep groove in the side wall. Also caused tire on opposite side to wear unevenly. Had to replace both tires as well as replace coil springs both sides. Live in maine (salt- belt state). Bought as used vehicle. Don't know if front springs were replaced. Date of incident was when the defect was found on regular inspection.

20 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

Both rear springs are broke.

21 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

On my 2000 Ford Taurus sedan, the right rear suspension spring has broken. Fortunately, it did not puncture the tire, but my mechanic said it could have and that he had seen a number of other Tauruses where that precise problem had occurred. A similar issue was identified with the front springs and a recall was issued to add protective caps to prevent a dangerous condition. In addition, Ford replaced broken springs, although I believe this was a customer service choice by Ford, rather than a condition of the recall. I reported the issue to Ford, but thought NHTSA should be made aware of the issue as well. We live in the greater chicago area.

22 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 05/28/2010

Rear springs broke while moving in driveway. What would have happened if I was at speed on the highway? should have lasted longer than 72,000 miles. I take good care of this car and had planned to keep it a long time.

23 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

Both rear springs broken on a 2001 Ford Taurus ses. While rotating tires, the mechanic noticed that both rear springs were snapped. Two new struts with springs were installed at a cost of over $700. The parts are not available, however, I personally saw the left rear spring in the car before it was replaced.

24 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 05/06/2010

I was driving to work and I heard an extremely loud pop come from the right rear side of my car when I had made a left hand turn at a stop light. At first I didn't think anything of it because I saw no evident damage after arriving at work. About 2 weeks later I noticed some abnormal tire wear. I took my car to the shop to ask about the tread wear and when they went to rotate my tires they found that the rear right spring had fallen off the seat. Because of the spring falling off the seat I had to have the entire right rear strut replaced. Because of the history with the springs falling off the seats and the potential damage it could do I also had the left rear strut replaced as well. I had done some research to find that what happened to my car is a very common problem among 2002 Ford Taurus as well as older models. I want the safety commission to be aware that this has happened to my vehicle now as well.

25 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

My 2000 Ford Taurus rear spring broke yesterday. The tire was punctured and destroyed the tire. I can't believe there is no recall on these springs based upon the number of consumers who have had this same issue. Not only was I about to take this on the interstate which could of caused a major crash, it would of also put my family at risk. Ford needs to be held accountable for this problem that is wide spread among 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and sable models.

26 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/21/2010

See ea08018. . . Rear springs both snapped on my 2002 Ford Taurus. Thank god I hadn't made it to the interstate yet. After some research, it appears this extremely common on the 2002 Ford Taurus and that Ford is aware of the chronic nature of this issue. 27 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/19/2010

I just purchased a 2002 Ford Taurus with 40, 673 miles. I had the vehicle safety inspected and revealed that both rear springs were broken. I learned that this is a very common occurrence on the 2002 Taurus, after the fact that I had just purchased the vehicle. My dealer is replacing them at no charge, but I will have to pay to replace the front springs. How can a vehicle with 40,500 miles have broken springs? I am concerned for the safety of my young family driving on the roadways if all the springs are not replaced, and the 2002 Taurus is not recalled.

28 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

Both rear springs broke on my 2002 Taurus at the same time. The broken spring also damaged the rear tires. My mechanic would not let me drive the car till it was repaired because the broken springs were sticking into the rear tires.

29 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

My 2001 Ford Taurus rear springs broke, causing the struts to break also. This is the 3rd Taurus I have owned that did this. Ford did recall on the front springs but not the back spring. This is a safety issue.

30 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/21/2010

I have a problem with my 2001 Ford Taurus that I feel is a safety issue. My concern with my vehicle is that I discovered that it has three broken springs, one of which came very close to causing damage to my tire, I discovered this after I heard a loud noise from the front of the car. Upon investigating I discovered a broken front spring. Following this I discovered both rear springs were broken as well. I thought it was very odd to have three broken springs on the same car. Researching this problem on the web I found this to be a very common problem. I contacted a Ford dealer for service and was informed that Ford has extended the warranty period for the front springs but not the rear. I feel this is a safety issue and should require Ford to recall and fix this problem. Observing how close the spring was to making contact with the tire I feel there could have been severe consequences should the spring cause sudden tire failure. I believe that a springs sudden failure would have the potential to cause handling problems as well. Again, three spring failures? it would appear this may be a manufacturing problem such as a defective heat treating process or inferior steel used in the manufacturing of the springs.

31 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

2002 Ford Taurus front left driver side spring failure. Luckily, car was not in use when it happened. It was sitting in the driveway idle for 1 full day (March 12). Tried to use it tonight, moved a few inches, seemed like something was hung up. There was a sound of something rubbing against rubber. Examined suspension being closer to the ground than usual. Found front driver side spring broken near the bottom. It has extended past the bracket which holds it. It is putting extreme pressure onto the tire. If I was to drive it further, it would most definitely puncture the tire and cause more damage to other parts of the vehicle. I do not know the status of the strut. Could have been deadly if it happened while traveling on the highway. Also looks as if at least one of the rear springs has broken. Will be calling Ford dealer to get estimate for repairs. Looks as if it is happening to many of the cars manufactured after the 1998 to 2001 recall, also the 2002 and 2003 model years.

33 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Front springs on my 2001 Ford Taurus station wagon have broken, within a few months of each other. I thought that the problem was not common, but when I did some research on the internet I discovered that a recall notice was supposed to have been sent out in 2004. I did not receive that recall, even thought the car was registered with Ford. Note - these were clean breaks and not a result of the gradual deterioration of metal due to rust (caused by winter salt). The problem has not caused a crash, but my research found that in many cases the faulty springs broke through the spring seat and rupture the front tire. This problem has been documented as - 2000 Ford Taurus recall id from NHTSA: 04v332000 auto recall date: 20040715. Although that defect applied to a model year 2000 Taurus, the problem occurs in other model years. This is a serious safety hazard, particularly if the spring ruptures a front tire when the car is being driven on a highway. The problem has also been reported on rear springs, which have also punctured the tires. As such it should be mandatory for Ford to issue a recall notice to all owners of Taurus automobiles. This has not been done and will not be done unless NHTSA demands it.

34 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2008 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

The car has problems with rear caster alignment. According to Ford and others there is no alignment for rear caster. I started noticing problems at approximately 15k miles. After taking it to an alignment shop with no fix I took it to a Ford dealer. They convinced me it would only be minor wear on the rear tires. I am now on my 3rd set of tires at 49k and after taking it to more alignment shops and a frame shop. The local Ford dealer and Ford said I had sagging springs (I was not convinced). They replaced and said it was fixed. I told them I would have it double checked. Guess what it still is out of alignment with the same readings I originally took it in for.

35 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus se v6. The left front spring broke and began to rub the tire. I was only doing about 30 mph at the time on a small road and could pull over in about 300 feet. This car also had two rear springs break about 6 months ago. The car has 117,000 miles on it. I had a 1999 Taurus that had a recall that installed a shield around the spring to prevent a spring break from shredding the tire. This is an unsafe design. If I were going highway speeds when this happened, I probably would have been severely injured, possible rollover.
