I didnt get into and accident. Went to change my tires, the rear springs were broke. I replaced both sides and spent 800. Took my car into my dealer in January to get my heat fixed and they told me the right front spring was broke. So I had the fix plus the tie rod.
2001 Ford Taurus rear spring failure . The drivers side rear spring broke and ruined the tire . It almost wore through the side wall of the tire . I think this is a real safety problem . I called Ford and to report the problem . At this time their are no recalls for rear springs .
While backing out of a parking spot, I heard a pop and noticed the front end was leaning. When I looked out the door, I concluded it as a flat tire. Later the towing company stated it was due to the front driver's side spring breaking and puncturing the tire. The spring, mount, and strut all had to be replaced. Ford motor company was notified and stated that my vehicle was not on any recalls. (approx. Mileage 107,000) within the past 2 months, both rear springs broke as well.
Broken rear driver side spring pending repair you people have limited your investigation in ea08018 to only the front springs on the Taurus models. The back springs are garbage too. Thanks to you !@#$% bureaucrats, thousands of drivers nationwide are being screwed out of hundreds and thousands of dollars of repair costs. Most mechanic don't want to just replace the springs, they want to replace the struts too. That estimated cost is $1200. So far we've been lucky that the one spring that did brake, did not do peripheral damage, so far.
I own a 2001 Ford Taurus which I purchased brand new. It has less than 70, 000 miles and the rear springs completely rotted out. The service station advised me that I shouldn't even drive the car home because the spring could puncture the tire. It cost $850 to replace the springs and the struts. Ford recalled the front but not the back. This is a safety issue and Ford should recall the back as well as the front springs.
1. The 2002 Taurus was purchased new and we have had no unusual incidents, accidents, or failures. 2. The 2002 Taurus with less then 60,000 miles was parked when the rear spring snapped. The edge of the spring cut the rear tire causing the tire to fail. All of this happened with the vehicle parked and unoccupied. Yes we retained both of the (failed) rear springs. 3. We had the vehicle toed to the Ford dealer. We had both rear springs replaced. When asked if there was a design change on the spring all we were told was to drive with caution.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that both of the rear springs failed. He took the vehicle to a mechanic and they made the repairs. The failure mileage was 101,659. Updated 08/03/09

The rear spring on our 2003 Ford Taurus broke overnight. As we tried to drive it in the morning we heard a grinding noise coming out of the wheel well and pulled the car into the driveway. We removed the tire and discovered the spring had snapped and the jagged tip was grooving the inside sidewall of the tire. Had this happened on the highway, it would surely have blown the tire. Replacing both rear springs cost $590. 07, and replacing the tire under a road hazard warranty cost another $86. 78. The car has only 76,200 miles on it. In researching the problem on the internet we discovered this is a very common problem with front and rear springs on the Ford Taurus, all the way up through the 2004 models. . Read more...

2003 Ford Taurus - rear spring broke and slashed tire. Vehicle was sitting still when this happened but if moving could have caused a serious accident. Had to replace rear struts and springs and new tire. $582.
Car 2002 Ford Taurus sel 3. 0l the rear drivers side spring broke and cut the rear tire. The incident happened when the car was being backed out of the garage. Car had to be taken to the dealership on a flatbed. Both rear springs and the cut tire are being replaced.
My son was driving my 2001 Ford Taurus. He pulled in to my driveway with smoke coming from under the hood and right side of car. My mechanic said the front spring broke which also broke the strut and shredded the boot. Its covered by the warranty. Now my concern is the rear springs. Why is there no recall for this! apparently Ford knows of these complaints and does nothing! please issue a recall!! before someone gets killed!.
Driving my 2001 Ford Taurus and realized I had a flat. My husband came to get me and noticed that my rear tire was shredded and my rear springs broke and the jagged metal shredded my tire. I called Ford who told me it was covered under something like a recall, but not an actual recall. We drop car off, I then get a call saying it will be $736!!! the service manager said he didn't realize it was my rear tire (not front) when he told me it would be 100% covered. Why isn't it covered if all these complaints and they are covering front. My car has a little more than 40,000 miles on it. This was after spending $1200 on air conditioning system last summer and $600 for heater problems this winter.
My husband was driving the vehicle when the rear tire blew making the car undrivable. It was towed to a mechanic who found that both of the rear springs had snapped. I was told that had he been traveling at a higher speed he most assuredly would have either been seriously injured or killed. The cost of the repair so far has totaled almost $900 dollars. Ford has acknowledged that they know about this problem and my front springs are also about to snap. Ford stated that the front springs are recalled but the rear are not because there have not been any fatalities yet. I hope that it does not take a death or serious injury to get Ford or the nhsta to make Ford own up to its responsibility.
The rear springs of my 1996 Ford Taurus gl have both broken through normal driving conditions.

Ford has a waranty replacement on thier front springs for a Ford Taurus but not on thier back springs, I own a 2001 Ford Taurus with 83,000 miles and the both back springs are broke and it was close to punturing the rear tire, if the front springs break and are coverd but not the backs one is'nt it a safety issue as well.
I own a 2002 Ford Taurus with 95000 miles. I had (fortunately) parked my car for work; on return had a flat tire. On changing it, found the inside of the tire ripped open almost all the way around. When I took it in for a new tire, it was found the front driver spring had broken, and I was told "the Taurus has a problem with this". I had to replace both front springs and struts, get new tires and a wheel alignment to the cost of $1300. Now I'm researching and found the 2002 was not included in the recall for this problem, and the rear springs can break too, usually at much lower mileage. I'm now afraid to drive my car, and am looking for a new one sooner than I had planned. This could have been catastrophic if it had happened on the highway.
2001 Ford Taurus with suspension noise while driving. Ford mechanic diagnosed problem as front and rear springs broken on 2/2/2009. Parts have not yet been replaced.
We returned home after a five hour trip and parked in our garage, a while later returned to car to retrieve an item out of the car. When I sat down in the drivers seat I heard a loud "bang" that came from the rear of the car. Upon checking things out, I found that the rear drivers side spring had broken. The end result could have been much worse if this happened while traveling due to the fact that the sharp edge of the broken spring was really close to the inside of the tire. I have never seen a spring break like this before. I had a 2001 Taurus that had a recall for the front springs. The band-aid recall from Ford was to install a "shield" on the springs to keep them from puncturing the front tire if the spring broke. When this last issue happened last week, I done some checking and was shocked at the amount of complaints I found for the front and rear spring breakage on the Taurus. Ford is only recalling the 99-01 Taurus for the front springs. The Taurus has continued to have this problem beyond the 2001 model year and Ford has done nothing to help. Why don't I have this kind of problem with my 15 year old 170,000 mile Toyota avalon? when Toyota has a safety issue with any of their vehicles the step up and correct the problem including buying back thousands of their trucks. They must put a higher value on a persons life then Ford! this repair for the rear struts and springs was over $300 for parts alone. Now I'm worried about the front springs breaking while my wife is driving! I was looking to buy a 2010 new body Taurus later this year, but I have suddenly changed my mind. I see a new avalon in our family's future.
The failure is a broken left rear spring, requiring replacement of both rear springs. The old parts are not available. I would not say that the broken spring in my particular case caused immediate danger as the spring was still in the spring seat, however it is cause to fail a PA state safety inspection, and could have become dangerous if the spring was not replaced. The vehicle had 99,600 miles at the time of the failure. I can't pinpoint any specific events other than almost 100,000 miles of use in the salt belt. It is a common failure on the Taurus, and mine broke later than many others. The front springs (which have not broken on my car) are covered under recall. . . The rears should be as well.
My rear spring on the left side of my car snapped and slashed my tire as I was driving. The car is a 2002 Ford Taurus. From what I've read on many discussion boards this is a common occurrence with 2002 Ford Tauruses. I think Ford should think about doing a recall for this particular problem being that there is a defect in their springs for this model.
My 2002 Ford Taurus broke a front spring and punctured my tire. This is the second time one of the springs has broken. In the summer of 2007 a rear spring also broke. I only have 32,000 miles on my car and take very good care of my car I was luck the last spring broke in my driveway but right before it broke I was driving in an ice storm. These 2002 Taurus need to be recalled before no one is in a serious accident. December 2008 I had a merry christmas because I was not involved in an accident.
Rear springs snapped in 2002 Ford Taurus. Causing the spring to slide into the side of the tire. Spring has signs of rust pitting, possibly causing the stress of the spring to snap.
While having my oil changed at a repair facility, it was pointed out to me that both rear suspension springs on my 2000 Ford Taurus are broken in the same place. I called Ford to ask about a recall or technical bulletin and they responded that this is "normal" wear and tear. I do not agree.
2nd request on behalf of constituents, requesting NHTSA not only recall the 2001 Ford Taurus but reopen a 2007 investigation re this matter, ES have no rec of previous ltr fm sen. Mcconnell but re es11-005500/s/ c. Lieu the consumer stated her brother and his friend died in a car accident, and a third passenger was injured, when the rear spring broke and caused him to loose control of the vehicle.
Went to my local Ford dealer to take care of a recall notice I had received on my 2001 Taurus for broken front springs. While the dealer took care of my front springs they also inspected the rear springs on the car. When they were finished they came out and told me the rear springs are cracked and needed to be replaced but were not covered under the recall. I work in the auto industry dealing with metal parts. I understand the process of heat treating metals and if Ford was having problems with the front springs cracking and breaking due to bad heat treating, the rear springs from the same time period should be suspect and also part of the recall.
I had my car inspected today and found out both rear springs on the struts were broken. When researching the problem, I've found out this is common in 2001 Taurus sedans. This is a dangerous defect and I don't understand how a recall could be made for the front struts but not the back. A rear tire popping at 73 mph because of a broken spring breaking loose is just as dangerous as a front tire.
Front & rear springs failed on 2001 Ford Taurus & were replaced. Front springs also destroyed struts & were covered under a manufacturer warranty. Rear springs also destroyed shocks but were not covered under warranty. Ford dealer indicated that this failure was "common" on this model year.
Inspection of suspension on my 2001 Ford Taurus by tire shop on 11 oct 08 revealed both rear springs are broken. Internet sites list numerous incidents of tires being punctured by broken springs. I guess not enough people have died in order to force Ford to recall this very dangerous condition? you would think Ford or the news media would inform the public about this potentially fatal defect. I really can't think of a more serious condition that would justify an organization like yours. Thank you dan archer.
Both rear springs broken on a 2003 Taurus.
Rear springs both broke. Car has recall for front springs but not rears. After doing research on this many of these models have broken springs.
On 7-29-08 I was coming off the freeway and was told I had a flat tire. I pulled into national tire and battery. The service department informed me that 3 springs were broken and that the rear passenger side spring tore through my tire deflating it. I'm lucky I wasn't killed doing 60 on the freeway. I called Ford and they won't pay for it. That's a defect that Ford should be held accountable for.

While on vacation, driver side rear spring broke, causing driver side rear strut to break. Had to replace both rear springs and struts. Car currently has only 31,000 miles on it.
