On 5/31/2013 I purchased a new 2013 Ford Taurus sho. Today, the car has about 73,000 miles on it. About three weeks ago I began smelling a hot smell, like plastic or sulfur, but could not pin point it. I was concerned that my car was going to catch on fire because it just didn't smell right, both inside and outside the car. I only smelled it after the car got warmed up and was stationary or moving slow in town. After I accelerated the smell would go away, but would come back when I slowed down and stopped. Then I began to notice a couple drops of fluid underneath my car. I took it to the dealership who told me I probably had some oil on the engine, which would go away with time. I had the oil changed and new tires put on and asked them to check a couple error codes I had gotten. The service technicians told me my car was fine and I could drive it, including to chicago for christmas. The smell problem continued and the leak progressively got worse, so I immediately took it back again. They now tell me that the power transfer unit has failed and the car has a turbo down pipe leak. To repair, it will cost me over $2,000. 00. I contacted Ford to see if they could help me. They told me that because the powertrain warranty has expired, they will not help me. I explained that this car would still be under warranty as of may 31, 2017 and the powertrain should not fail at 73,000 miles, most of which were highway miles. Ford still will not provide any assistance. In speaking with the dealership, they told me this is an issue that has been going on. They've had 5 other ptus fail in about six months. Ford documented the case number as 11420940. I am going to take pictures and save all documents and receipts.

While my vehicle was in cruise control at 68 mph on a 3 lane highway, the vehicle without any warning began to quickly loose speed and the ability to keep pace with surrounding traffic. The transmission became unresponsive and the vehicle lost the ability to accelerate and function in a safe manner. I quickly and unknowingly dropped below the safe driving speed for the highway and posed a safety risk to myself and of the drivers on the road around me. In the course of rapid deceleration I was almost struck in the rear by a vehicle that was not made aware of my loss of speed, as I did not apply the brakes. As soon as possible and as to not further endanger those around me; I turned on my hazard lights and relied on evasive driving to coast the vehicle to the safety of the shoulder. Once off the highway, motor responded but none of the gears (reverse, overdrive, 1st, or 2nd) would engage. The car had no warning lights, service lights, or check engine signals illuminate on the instrument panel and there are no fluid leaks or outward appearance of any broken components. This sudden malfunction has rendered my vehicle barely functional and not safely maneuverable.

My wife was driving the car with one of our grandkids in the back seat. She pulled off a main road to a side street, she went about 50 yards and the car stopped going forward. The engine was running fine, but there was no drive from the transmission no mater which gear she put it into. Evidently the transmission failed without any prior indication such as leaked transmission fluid, a trouble light indication and no sound. This is indeed a safety issue because if it had failed in the intersection there was a possibility of an accident. I am extremely upset and disappointed with Ford's handling of this failure of there product.
Driving out of town the vehicle showed no signs of any problems including no dashboard lights or warnings displaying any need of maintanance. While turning onto another street at a low rate of speed then pressing accelerator to go, the drivetrain suddenly stopped pulling and the car stopped . The engine was still running at idle speed but the rpms were fluctuating up and down then stabilized at about 1,200 rpms. There were no sighns of any fluid leaks or pinched lines. Just a sudden stop, leaving me and my family stranded in the middle of nowhere. The expenses of hiring a wrecker to tow the vehicle to the nearest shop, and the actual repair expense was well over our family budget and has caused us a great deal of unnecessary hardships in our daily lives.

Sitting at a stop light. Car would rev when light turned green but no acceleration. Pushed it to the side of the road. No warning lights, no slipping of gears, no fluid leaking no sounds or jerky feelings. Called Ford and got a case number, but they are no help. Contacted clark howard, consumer advocate and he advised me to contact Ford. Found 299 complaints of the same problem on carcomplaints. Com and same problems on autosafety. Org. I was told by Ford that the transmission is out of warranty. I said I would help with cost but feel Ford should take responsibility. Are they waiting for a fatality?.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Ford Taurus. When the vehicle was taken to the dealer for regular maintenance, the contact was informed that his vehicle was leaking transmission fluid. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000. - ll.
I was driving to work going approximately 10 mph and my car just stopped moving, the engine continued to run, but I could not get the car to move in any gear. I also noticed tranmission fluid leaking onto the road. I had the car towed to a service garage to have it checked out. The mechanic called me later that day and told me my transmission was shot. I was given 2 options, have a new transmission put into the car or have mine rebuilt. This would include replacing the torq converter and a chain in the transmission shaft that was showing signs of excessive wear. I choose to have it rebuilt. The mechanic informed me that there was a recall on Ford windstar's for similar problems involving the transmission and the torq converter. He told me that the same transmission and torq converter were also in my Ford Taurus. I have owned and operated several vehicles produced by the Ford motor CO. With more than 100,000 miles on them and never experienced any problems with the transmission. The mechanic told me I should file a complaint with the national highway transportation safety board.
After driving approximately 3-miles without incident stopped for a red-light. When light changed, stepped on accelerator but car would no move in an gear selected. No prior noises or fluid leakage; just a dead transmission. Appears to be a common (well documented) problem with vehicles of this year, make and model.
Driving down the highway on Nov. 24, 2011 and all of a sudden car lost driving power. Coasted to the side of the road and can not drive car. Will not drive, reverse, nothing. Car turns on but will not drive. Transmission fluid is red and does not appear to be leaking.
Update on transmission fluid loss of 10/27/11. Transmission oil loss unbeknown to me untill the transmission started to fail it's normal function. The cause was a leak in the trans cooler combo unit. The fluid accumulated at the base of the radiator. While it was on the lift I requested a check of the surpintine belt because it was squeeling. They made the dicovery that the belt was covered with transmission fluid. All this time, while driving, the trans. Oil was being sprayed over the belt causing it to slip over the pulleys of the power steering, ac unit pump and other equipment being driven by this belt. Things could have turned out very badly for me and my passengers, because of an oil soaked surpintine belt, not to mention the fire hazard. My cost was $750. 00. How do I go about recovering that cost. 78 years old. Let other people know of a possible problem with trans. Fluid leakage. And yet I love my Taurus.
On inspection: found leakingtransmission fluid fromcooler combo accumulating at base of radiator cover. Lost closae to three quarts of fluid before I got any warning ofthe loss by irregular shifting. No dashboard indicator that fluid was low. A fire hazard. Was there any damage to the transmission?. The dealer cost for repair and replacement $700. 00. Since when does one have to remove most of the front of the car to get to the radiator section. ?.
I was pulling out of a parking lot onto a street, when I pushed on the accelerator the car crept forward with resistance, as if trying to accelerate with the parking brake on. The car moved into the road at no more than 2 miles per hour. I immediately took my foot off the accelerator, then back on to try to move forward and out of the way of coming traffic. The car then moved forward and accelerated as it normally should. I was very fortunate that there was no immediate oncoming traffic, however, if the car had failed to accelerate normally after I released it and reengaged I probably would have been hit. After getting home I noticed a spot on the driveway where something was leaking from the car. My husband investigated and thought power steering fluid was leaking. I took the car in for a diagnostic check and the report was that it was acutally a leak from the transmission cooler. Because the transmission coolant is the same coil as the air conditioning it will cost around $600 to replace. I'm currently waiting for a second quote for the repairs.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that he deactivated the cruise control while driving 55 mph, but the vehicle would not decelerate. There was a constant increase in engine rpms until the contact applied heavy pressure to the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the throttle position sensor was replaced. The contact examined the vehicle the following morning and noticed that transmission fluid had leaked onto the ground. The failure persisted. The contact then disconnected the cruise control cable and the failure had not recurred since. the consumer stated the vehicle would not decelerate normally. There was a higher than normal engine rpm and he had to use heavier than normal braking to both slow and stop the vehicle. Just prior to arriving at a safe parking area, the idle returned to normal. After a brief stop, the consumer went back home. Initially, the idle was normal, but then the high idle returned. The vehicle wa taken to an independent mechanic, where the throttle position sensor was replaced. The consumer examined the vehicle the next day, where he noticed transmission fluid was leaking. The transmission dipstick shaft and dipstick was extended about 3-4 inches onto the ground. All fluids appeared normal after inspection was performed. The consumer replaced the iac and returned to the mechanic to verify proper installation. The consumer then disconnected the cruise control cable from the throttle body as the high idle persisted. The transmission leak continued despite numerous repairs performed by the consumer and the authorized dealer. Updated 04/23/12.

Car had a large leak of transmission fluid on the driveway. There was not any trouble with shifting gears but a whine, at times. Tried to take it to the dealer this past Monday at 10am. They were closed due to storm damage and electricity outages starting Sunday afternoon. Was referred to transmission company. Told it is a known problem at about 60,000 miles (I'm at little more than 58,000). The pressure inside changes and computer makes changes that then causes the fluid to rise through the vent. I'm been told it is going to be $1,816. 96 repair and three days without a vehicle. The repair shop is rebuilding the existing transmission. Technician stated unsure why Ford has not had a recall on this.
My 2000 Ford Taurus transmission is not working. The car only has 45,567 miles on it, and are the original ones as checked by car facts. One day as I was driving down a major highway in atlanta, georgia my vehicle stopped in the middle of ongoing traffic. If I didn't turn on my hazard lights and lift the front hood on my vehicle, I could have been hit, injured or killed. I have heard numerous people stating that their Ford Taurus has transmission problems. So, why has the manufacturer not recalled this car? the only warning I had was the day before when fluid leaked from under the car hood. Consumer has 40000 miles on vehicle and vehicle had to 3 transmissions. Consumer was driving to florida on the interstate and the vehicle stopped. Vehicle was towed because it would not pull. This was at 27, 000 miles. At 40000 miles the vehicle was leaking transmission fluid in the garage. Vehicle is in garage to have the power steering rack replaced, when consumer was told that the leak was transmission fluid he needed a new transmission. Vehicle has been to dealer often for different repairs. Consumer was told that there was no warranty. Consumer has had all recalls repaired on vehicle. Dealer told consumer that there may be something else in car causing transmission to fail. Vehicle is driven less than 4000 miles a year. Vehicle was purchased used with about 20,000 miles. Consumer owned vehicle for 6 years. Same dealer has done all repairs on vehicle, except one transmission because vehicle broke down in lima, ohio. This was done by Ford dealership.

Since we purchased the car new it has lurched forward when being started. The transmission has had a hard time shifting, reving the engine up, then jumping into gear. We have had it back to the dealer several times for various problems. Recently the transmission has been making noise and shifting badly. On a trip we found that it was low on transmission fluid although it hadn't leaked. We replaced the fluid and started driving home, checking the fluid several times. We looked in the reaarview mirror at one point and saw smoke coming out the back. Fluid had leaked on the engine and exhaust. We also discovered small drops of fluid on the back bumper of the car. When we got home, we parked the car, still no leak when sitting still. I backed the car up to take it to the dealer to be checked but when I put it in drive it won't engage in any forward gears. I then tried going backward again, nothing. I t has died. I called the dealer and stated I believe this is a Ford defect, especially after reading all the problems they have had with transmissions. I have been told too bad. They will be happy to replace it at my cost. Why would I want another bad transmission.

L997 Ford Taurus wagon. 60k miles. Treated with kid gloves and had the fluid changed at 60k in the transmission. Within 200 miles the trans went out. If I hadn't noticed leakage it likely would have stopped with a dangerous circumstance happening as a result. . . I. E. Heavy traffic, pulling out into traffic, etc.
I have advised Ford motor CO of a potentially dangerous condition identical to condition found in recall # 97v-097nsa-111paw, Ford # 97s75. The only difference is that transmission fluid leaking from the servo cover is caused by the cover becoming perforated by rust. This on a 1997 Ford Taurus which has been well taken care of but driven in vermont & new hampshire where salt is used during winter snows. Ford motor CO declined any participation because my car doesn't fall into the production category of the recall. The symptoms and leaking of oil against the catalytic convertor when driving are the same as those described in the recall. To this end, the first rust through problem occured with the oil cooler line which rusted out previously and have been replaced. Just a few weeks ago the metal tube from the heater to the rear of the engine began leaking from rustout and had to be replaced. I assure you this car is no "rust bucket" I am a fully certified (in all subjects) niase mechanic and know wherefrom I speak. There are a lot of these Taurus models operating in new england and I'm certain mine is not the only one with these rust problems. The consumer stated that the original transmission failed at 50,000 miles and was replaced. A second transmission was replaced and it has currently failed. The consumer was given a 3 year/36000 miles warranty, whichever came first. Also, transmission was leaking fluid. He took vehicle to the mechanic/dealer, and was told that he had bad hub seals that needed to be replaced replacing at the tune of $1200. 00. The transmission had been leaking for 2 weeks.
Have been leaking transmission fluid. Had the fittings replaced. Corrected problem for 1 day. Mechanic stated the transmission lines are leaking and will need replaced. We have been having difficulty locating the lines due to the fact that the part has been corrected several times and there is still a problem with the lines. Now I'm having problems with the transmission and shifting. The transmission is banging into gear. Bought the car used in 2000. When I changed the transmission fluid and filter discovered that the transmission is not the original. My car was manufacturedin September 1996 and the transmission, according to the numbers on it, was manufactured in 1998. Had a 1994 Taurus and the transmission completely went out of it and I traded in for this 1997. I will definitely not buy another Taurus or Ford product.
Consumer stated he became stuck in traffic, he was able to pull over to see if perhaps letting the engine cool off would help, after about one half hour, consumer started the vehicle, but was unable to put it any gear, consumer then noticed what seemed to be transmission fluid leaking onto the ground, the vehicle was towed to the dealership and consumer was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced.
After coming off a green light, at about 15 mph, transmission fluid began to leak and the rpm's revved with no further acceleration. After having vehicle towed to aamco, I was advised that the front seal had a major leak and failed along with the stador and transmission. I asked hayward Ford for recall or technical service issues and was told that there weren't any. I also called the Ford coroporate office and was told that there were no issues with the transmission. And I was told that there the Ford engineers would be forwarded the message, but wouldn't be giving me a call nor the information I needed.

Transmission fluid leaked. Yh.
This is the second 1996 Ford Taurus that I have owned. I traded the first one for my current vehicle when it was about to get its third transmission installed. I have had the transmission replaced in my present Taurus at 26800 miles(approx. ) and have developed a transmission fluid leak in this transmission. I am approaching my wits end with this situation and would like to know what can be done. I am receiving no help from my dealer. Thanks.

The automatic transmission was replaced at 50,000 miles. The replacement transmission leaked fluid from the hub seal.
