11 problems related to brake disc pads have been reported for the 1996 Ford Windstar. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Had changed brake pads a week earlier. Driving 55mph and the car crashed down on it's axle as the tire and wheel passed by us going down highway, in 37 north. Studs had all broken off. The disc brake is ruined from skidding on it. Traffic was moderately heavy. We skidded to a stop on a bridge and feel lucky not to have crashed into anyone.
Consumer replaced front brake pads for 2nd time. Pads were soft, and when they got hot they fade and stay covered with dust all the time. This was second time in a year, 6 months apart. Dealer stated it was a normal wear and tear.
Spring broke as the car was being jacked up to do a brake pad replacement.
Three sets of front brake pads in 30,000 miles or replaced every 8 months. Driving style is considered conservative.
When applying the brakes a loud grinding noise occurred. The brake pads were replaced. Also, brake shoes were worn badly on the right wheel, also brake shoes were bent.
Brake pads failed.
Ongoing problem with excessive wear and replacement of brake system. Pads/ rotors had to be replaced on five occasions within five years. Reoccurring problem of a squealing noise coming from wheel when brakes were applied. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
This vehicle has a soft (spongy) brake pedal, which results in extended stopping distances during hard or panic stops. This was emphasized recently when we narrowly avoided an accident on the interstate. The lack of braking effectiveness is not so obvious during normal driving. We have requested the dealer to repair this, originally shortly after the purchase, and just a week ago when the front brake pads were replaced. Replacing the brake pads did not correct the problem. The dealer seems unable to understand or correct the problem. This problem relates to your ea 96026; and I have seen many other complaints in your file. This is a serious safety defect.
Brake rotors replaced three times, brake pads replaced five times.
Owner has abs brakes; while applying brakes, brake pedal goes to floor. Also, full pressure was applied to brake pedal with no results. Owner further notes that brake rotors and pads were replaced. Owner is very concerned for safety.
When applying the brakes the steering wheel jumps all over the place. Dealer replaced warped pads and rotors. Problem exists again.
