Engine Failure problems of the 1996 Ford Windstar

Ten problems related to engine failure have been reported for the 1996 Ford Windstar. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

Dear Ford my mother and I have been trying to get answers from the dealer and since they gave up. Because they could not fix it right the first time. Even the second or third time. The van a 1996 Windstar with 59,000 miles on it and it started the engine started stalling, when making slow turns not touching the gas pedal loses power steering. My mom almost went into a ditch to avoid a collision with another car. With little internet searching found hundreds of vans with same problems, and appears there is not one resolved. And since this has gone on for over a month. The last visit to the Ford dealer in an attempt to fix the stalling. . The idle air control valve is new, and mass air flow is clean supposed to have been replaced also. I checked the air filter was clean, the fuel filter is original so I replaced it. I started looking at the throttle body, and noticed that the throttle plate screw was all gouged up. While I was sitting in drive way with engine running and unless Ford engines are only good for 60,000 miles, with all the stalling and low engine idle that keeps oil pressure in the engine lubricating the crank shaft. !! so when engine stalled at very low idle there was no oil getting through the engine. This engine now has lower end knock, which I verified by pulling van onto floor ramps, test drove and confirmed the problem, is critical. Each time I slowed down to turn engine stalled every time, lost power steering and brakes. I could have been killed because Ford is ignoring this problem¦. . And this also answers why other complaints were about engine failures and very expensive repairs. This letter will be put on all social networks, to warn others this could happen to them be aware. They said the ecu/pcm computer was updated. Could not find update on invoices, or in history I can access.

6 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2000

Engine stalls unexpectedly on warm to hot days. Causes loss of steering and braking and handling of vehicle. Engine stalls during normal operation, at intersections, needing to steer off the road to avoid collisions. Engine needs to cool down for 20 minutes before it will turn over. Recent newspaper article reported major collisons leading in death or severe injury because of this engine failure. Cases pending in California. Ford needs to be pressured by the NHTSA to have a recall of this tfi module which is positioned improperly on engine before more incidents occur or the tfi module needs to be redesigned to withstand more heat so that engine does not shut down while driving. We are afraid to drive the vehicle and need to have action taken now before something serious happens.

7 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2000

Vehicle has a blown head gasket, causing engine damage. The same engine in the 1995 Windstars have been recalled for total replacement of the head gaskets and all related damage. The 1996 Windstars that carried the same engine are not being recalled. According to the dealer these must be repaired at the owners expense, and may cause a total engine failure if continue driving. These engines were only placed in the early models of the 1996, and then after the 3. 8 l engines were recalled the newer 1996 Windstars contain the 3. 0l engine. We feel that Ford should cover the cost of repair as it is the same engine as the 1995 Windstar.

8 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/01/1999

The engine failed due to defect in manufacturing. Yh.

9 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/27/1999

I am reporting this problem due to the fact that Ford motor fails to admit there is a problem. I have spoken to many garages in the cincinnati area and they have had to replace many head gaskets. The mechanics at castrucci Ford said they have repaired two Windstars and were working on the third. This problem could cause catastophic engine failure and possibly result in an accident!!!! I feel that Ford should recall these vehicles.
