general problems of the 1999 Ford Windstar

12 problems related to equipment have been reported for the 1999 Ford Windstar. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

The axle on the back driver's side is terribly rusted to the point of no repair. The mechanic stated it is a recall problem and needs to be taken to the Ford dealer. He also stated that it is dangerous to drive due to the problems that it was causing the wheel to not fit or stay on correctly causing it to rub on the vans surface causing a blowout and making driving almost impossible and dangerous. Thank god my son drove it and not myself. Thank god that he is okay. This problem needs to be dealt with ASAP. I am a foster mom and drive children in this van and it definitely needs to be inspected for the problems and repaired. My son was on his way to put gas into the vehicle when this happened. The kids and I were going to hit the highway and go to a food pantry in the adjoining city. Thank god we didn't. This all happened while my son took the car to put gas in before the kids and I were to leave out. We had already stated that the wheel wasn't fitting on well and decided to take it to the mechanic. The mechanic told us there was nothing he could do because of the corrosion and then informed us about the recall on the vehicle and the problems this model was having with the axles and rust and corrosion and other problems. Thank god this was on a city street and at the time there was little traffic, otherwise it could have been a dangerous mess.

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2018

Subframe is completely rusted through and will not pass the safety. The vehicle was treated by the recall 11s16-s4. In 2012. I went for a voluntary safety check and the vehicle stayed at the service as very unsafe to drive.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

The transmission wont go into drive. When it does, it shifts very hard and at every stop sign it goes out of gear again.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2017

As I was backing out of a parking spot at the gas station my rear axle broke into two.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2016

My Windstar 1999 has only 100,000 miles on it, less when I bought it, and at that time I was informed of the rear axel recall. I reviewed the data, concerning the safety recall which ends at the end of oct 2016 and was concerned about the safety of passengers and others if an accident should happen within the next 5-10 yrs,(which how long I hope to have this). Being informed I had my closest Ford dealership replace the rear, and they billed my $300. 00. . . . . . . This is wrong, I should be reimbursed.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2016

Broken rear axle.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2016

I was driving to work with my wife and as we were coming over a small hump the back axel snapped. If I had not been decelerating coming down the hill then I would not have been able to control the car and bring it to a stop.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2014

Stopped at a light when the light turned green I went to go when the van suddenly stopped like I hit a wall. I had the van towed to american transmission on rt 88 in lakewood NJ. They dropped the transmission amd said it needed to be replaced, that basically it had melted everything inside the transmission and they said it happens often with these vans. . . . Ford is lucky it was 5am amd no one was driving behind me they would have crashed into me.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

Van is jumping at stop light with brake on, started making a clunking sound around 55 (unknown) power windows stopped working on right side. Only 92000 miles on van everything going wrong at once. Van feels unsafe. Do not have enough money to replace. Is there any recalls for this stuff? knocking noise in rear.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2010

The abs light goes on and off since the vehicle was purchased. The brakes have been checked several times and we were told they are fine. However, the light goes on and off. This would make any driver nervous to constantly worry if there is a brake issue especially with the family with you. Also, the speedometer and the tachometer has starting randomly bouncing around like crazy. It does not happen at a certain mileage either. After a minute or so, they start to function again. This began about a month ago. I have read several blogs of many fellow Windstar van owners that have been experiencing the same problem for years. I believe that Ford needs to step in and rectify the problems. Ford should stand by there product and fix the failing parts. Does there have to be a serious injury or death before a recall is done!.

12 Equipment problem

Design of left rear door cup holder inadequate, a 2 1/2 year old child was able to take the cup holder out and put a drinking cup in the hole causing the cup to fall into the door (wall).
