I have had my 2001 Ford Windstar for 4 years, and I have replaced the brakes pads and rotors 5 times and looks like I will be on my 6th replacement soon. . . The abs light on the dashboard keeps on in the engaged and will not release.
Abs lights illuminate on dashboard during which time antilock brake system and traction control does not operate at all. This occurs approximately 10-15 minutes after vehicle has been started and lasts the entire time the vehicle is being operated. This problem appears in warm weather around 95% of the time and about 30% of the time when temperatures are below freezing. Appears to be the antilock brake control module overheating but I cannot confirm that. Have had the speed control deactivation switch replaced under recall. Dealer inspected brake system at the same time and said the control module will have to be replaced at a cost of over $1,000. I am hesitant to spend the money as I am not sure if the new control module will have the same defect. I was hoping the previous recall would solve this problem but it did not. Wonder if the two issues are related.

Intermittent c1185 abs code is being caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. The expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. This causes an intermittent abs light due to the failure of the abs relay. This is a manufacturing defect that has serious safety ramifications, and should be replaced by Ford under warranty.

Upon going to auto zone and checking what kind of code comes up for the problem, I received 20+ codes relating to brakes/abs problems. I looked up the problem and discovered it was very popular amongst Ford Windstars from 1999-2003. I have a 2001 Ford Windstar and this problem is very troublesome. Upon requesting a quote to fix this problem, I was looking at $2000+ (parts, labor and warranty). It seems the abs module is bad, and it itself costs $550 just in parts. This problem is persistent among a lot of Ford Windstar and potentially dangerous and life threatening. I would like Ford to take some sort of action and issue a re-call.

While sitting at a stop with foot applied to the brake pedal and brake pedal failed and went straight to the floor. Vehicle lurched forward with force and entered first lane of traffic on highway. Abs light illuminated on the dashboard, and the warning chime went off. Several times vehicle has been at dealer to determine problem, but nothing has been found. Dealer was notified. Please provide more information.
