While driving on x way appox. 60 mph, noticed smoke emitting from rear of car and begin hearing a clicking sound. As I was pulling car over to side the right rear tire suddenly deflated. Tow truck was called, upon loading of vehicle on bed of truck was able to see rear axle in the middle toward passenger side had rusted thru right in the middle of a bracket Ford had installed in 2011 due to a recall. Was informed that in 2015-16 Ford did another recall on the bracket not being improperly installed. As showed in the attached photo there is only one bracket installed, my understanding there should be two. But even then that does not resolved the rust problem, it just holds the axle when it does break or corrode thru.

Driving home I heard a thud and my 2001 Ford Windstar spun off the road. Turns out the axle cracked in half and almost killed me. Towed the car into the Ford dealership and even though there is an open safety recall on my Windstar and Ford knows of thousand of axle problems they said that it is not covered. Ford's way of getting put of it even though my brothers 2003 Windstar axle failed and yet Ford covered that one. This is not right. They know there axles are bad and have had three safety recalls on these axles.
I had the rear axle replaced by the recall, and which I paid $300 for the work. The axle now does not align properly and I have been told that shims are required. Without them the rear axle eats my tires. Ford has a policy to my understanding that new parts installed by Ford have a lifetime warranty. I believe that Ford should fix or pay for this work so as to make my van safe, why should I have to repair an axle that was just replaced less then 10000 miles ago.
On Saturday morning July 15th 2017, I was driving at 2:30 am. I had just left for my first job and crossed a set of train tracks. When I did, the rear axle snapped almost causing me to crash. After looking for the cost to replace the axle, I came upon a Ford recall. When I placed my VIN in the computer it came up that my 2002 Ford Windstar was in fact included in the recall. I talked to someone at Ford via live chat on Saturday after having the vehicle towed home and they stated that the recall was outstanding and I needed to call the Ford dealership. I paid again to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. Now Tuesday morning July 18th 2017, both the dealership and Ford is saying that they cant help me and I need to take care of replacing the completely rusted rear axle. The rust causing the axle to snap was the reason for the recall in the first place. I have owned this vehicle less than 6 months and now as a single mom am left without a vehicle. I will never buy another Ford again in my life and I will also discourage my friends and family from purchasing Fords as well.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Windstar. While driving various speeds, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration and the abs sensor indicator remained illuminated. As a result, the vehicle failed to accelerate properly. While the vehicle was undergoing routine service, the independent mechanic also discovered that the front driver side control arm was damaged and needed to be replaced. The cause of the failures was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Rear axle broke while driving even though recall brackets were properly replaced. This issue could cause death or severe injury. Luckily for us, we were just turning a corner on the way to the store. Ford will not help with financial costs due "extended warranty having expired in oct of 2016". People still driving these vehicles should be made aware that unless you've had this completely replaced, and really that's no guarantee, this could still occur while you are driving.
My grandson(4year old)and I was driving home from bank on 15 April 2017,then suddenly on puritan Ave the drivers side rear tire started to rub frame and smoke entered vehicle ,I got out to check and notice the rear axle on drivers side was cracked and tire was leaning in and rubbing frame because of cracked axle. I was 2 blocks from home, so I drove home very slowly ,once home I made online appointment to take car to dealership which was for 17april 2017 at suburban Ford of ferndale 21600 woodward Ave ferndale,mi 48220 tel: 248-399-1000. I had to call aaa michigan and have van towed to dealership and once there the service personell told me that I would have to pay to have van repaired because the recall had expired in 2015 they did'nt even inspect to see what was wrong just assumed ,so I showed him the recall letter which he said it don't matter so I had to have van towed back home where it sits now, I wasshocked and harden by the rude treatment of the dealership, so I call Ford motor company and was told the same thing that I would have to pay for repairs myself and that recall was only for a re-inspection,just sad how I was treated,I'm a disabled veteran and needs my vehicle for doctors appointments and wife appointments also.
This vehicle was serviced at 102,654 miles, in March-April of 2011 by koons Ford of maryland, (invoice#w70829, dated may 5, 2011) in response to Ford recall, related to "broken front subframe" and "collapsing rear axle". --front subframe was, at that time, broken on the right side, due to rusting. Replacement was not done, instead it was patched via a bolted together "clamshell" reinforcing device. It now has become apparent that after using the vehicle after this initial frame separation, the metal of the left side was unduly stressed, and has now broken at its weldment point, resulting in an unsafe vehicle, that swerves to the left, if brakes are applied while in motion on the street or other roadway. Wheels are no longer kept in alignment, with left front wheel free to move to the front or rear, in response to applied stress! this subframe failure affected many such vehicles, and it has become evident that inspection and repair was inadequate, resulting in a new, unsafe condition! (subframe should have been replaced, due to stress!)-photos are attached, showing displaced frame, and separated weld joint.
Rear axle cracked while driving, this is the second axle that broke for this van.
Under recall# 15s27, Ford has declined to replace rear axle with at reduced cost. (see attached recall notice. ) this rear axle corrosion problem was persistent in this model.
I was informed of a recall to the rear axle on my 2003 Ford Windstar, I took the vasn into the delaer and had the inspection done as well as the brackets installed. ( 15s27). The van was then parked for approx 5 months after the procedure was done as I was given a company vehicle. I was then let go from my job and began to drive the old trusty van that we have around. 2 weeks into driving it on a regular basis I began to smell an odor of burning rubber. Nursed the van home and began to attempt to diagnose the problem. Changed the wheel bearing on the drivers rear as I thought that was the problem. Got it all back together and found out I still had the same problem. Had aaa tow the vehicle to the dealer where they informed me that now my axle was broken, and by the way the recall was now over and I would be required to pay 1150. 00 for a new one. This vehicle was never correctly inspected to identify this problem, it was just shuffled through and now nobody will stand up and make the repair. I have been cheated by the system. I do not believe this is fair nor do I believe it wass ever done correctly.
While driving axle broke on van whlile going down alley. Contacted Ford motor company end result they say reinike Ford a dealership in lima, ohio replaced the faulty support brakets in 2011. Which was a recall on van. While all along dealership wasn't telling me they did the recall work. I feel this needs to be addressed before someone losses there life. Which there were drivers that have lost there life and many seriously hurt because of the same issue. Ford has put there recall out. But something needs done with the dealer.
The rear axle on the drivers side has a crack in the repair bracket but dealer told me I missed the deadline on Ford paying for recall.
2000 Ford Windstar. Consumer writes in regards to axle broke in two pieces, while driving.
Takata recall uncontrollable driving with steering rear end fishtailing.
Recall rear axle cracks. I took my Ford 2001 Windstar for 3rd recall and learned that I have cracks in my axle. Ford dealer and customer services said that the offer f discounted replacement expired on October 30th 2016 where I need to pay full price to fix it. We cannot afford to pay and why is consumer paying for defective parts which was the original recall where deaths occurred? instead of replacing the parts, Ford was allowed to put brackets to hold up the axle. The defect is still there and now consumer are driving unsafe and when realized of situation, a substantial cost by the consumer to correct Ford's negligence. Why it is allow and what can be done for working folks who cannot replace new cars. We took a lot of care of our car so we can have a car. Why is Ford not responsible to correct their problem at no cost to the consumer?.
While pulling out of gas station ihear noise and smell rubber burning. Carefully drive 3 blocks to my house. Notice rear tires leaning into wheel wells. I then see broken axle. Ford said axle reinforcement brackets were installed properly 7 months ago under recall. I have no money to fix.

2003 Ford Windstar. Consumer writes in regards to dealership refuses to repair axle recall notice until consumer pays for a new $300 axle replacement. The consumer stated the dealer installed the brackets at no charge.
2003 Ford Windstar. Consumer writes in regards to rear axle reinforcement brackets recall notice repair issues. The consumer was informed the brackets were installed correctly. However, there was a crack in the axle.
My Windstar 1999 has only 100,000 miles on it, less when I bought it, and at that time I was informed of the rear axel recall. I reviewed the data, concerning the safety recall which ends at the end of oct 2016 and was concerned about the safety of passengers and others if an accident should happen within the next 5-10 yrs,(which how long I hope to have this). Being informed I had my closest Ford dealership replace the rear, and they billed my $300. 00. . . . . . . This is wrong, I should be reimbursed.
While driving with my three small children, the rear axle of my van broke. I was going at a minimal rate of speed and was able to pull over without injury. This vehicle has been subject to numerous recalls, several of which have included corrosion of the subframe and axle. Our local Ford dealership is telling me that I may be responsible for payment for repair of the recalled product. However, I do not feel safe driving this vehicle anymore. They have stated that they will repair the damaged part with the same rear axle that has been recalled numerous times. This is not a remedy. I am trying to get them to consider a trade-in or product buy-back. If they will not, I will be leaving a signed statement with new south Ford (meridian, ms) stating that I do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle off the lot due to the risk of rear axle corrosion/failure.
I was driving at hwy speed and rpm's went up and car slowed down. Stopped and tried shifting gears no luck/movement. Had car towed. Transmission wiped out second time in 14 months. Ford needs to step up.
Rear axle broke in half while driving,( backing up in driveway) my 2003 Ford Windstar.
2002 Windstar recall I was driving down the road one day to find out all off all the shifters but neutral the van suddenly had stopped going we could not go in drive reverse or anything find out stuck in middle of intersection with cars coming our way this problem is still unknown.
