Transmission in our 2002 Ford Windstar Mini van made abnormal noises for about 2 months. Vehicle was taken to dealership of purchase for inspection, and they attributed the problem to tire and wheel alignment. All four tires were replaced with alignment. Also, transmission noise persisted, and vehicle was returned to dealership. Again nothing wa s found wrong on inspection with instructions to return later for more complete examination. On February 10, 2005 transmission malfunctioned accelerating the engine to 3200 rpms with a speed of 70 mph. Vehicle suddenly lost control and veered to the left into a left turn lane, resulting in a collision with an illegally parked truck and trailer. Subsequent investigations revealed the driver was unable to stop the vehicle by braking. The driver, my son , was trapped in the Windstar Mini van due to a complete collapse of the front frame. After a difficult extraction by the city fire department my son was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

16 Transmission Noise problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 04/09/2004

While driving a van full of 6 young girls to a sports practice, the van started jumping when slowing down and accelerating. We stopped at a stop sign and then the car would not move in drive . Suddenly, it jumped into drive, all the while , my carfull were very upset and thought we were going to crash. I barely made it to the practice parking lot. The van was jumping the whole drive. It then stalled in the driveway. I attempted to turn the car back on but there came a very loud, scary noise from the engine. I got it on, but it would not drive in drive, only in nuetral. I had to be towed. It was a major hassle. I came to find that th e transmission had gone at 72,000 miles. I had been complaining to the dealer that the engine light was always on. It was evaluated and they said it was a sensor problem that all started at about 30,000 miles. Come to think of it, the van "jumped from gear to gesr since day 1". Ford motor company will also be contacted. It seems pretty fishy that there are so many complaints about the same thing.

20 Transmission Noise problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 05/15/2003

I complained of a rattling noise sounding like chains under the hood of the van , starting from 7,700 miles to the present. Each time taking it in and being told that they could not find a problem, to them fixing something and the noise still being there. I stated to them on several occasions that the van was not riding right. I complained of a loud grinding noise when I turned the wheel. Again, they said nothing was wrong. The brakes where always rubbing and they replaced the pads. I was told semi-metallic pads make noises. They replaced the computer, because I complained that upon accleration the van would make a pinging noise. I was told it was combustion with the gas. I followed there recommendations about what gas to use, and other things to do. It still continued and they stated that they could do nothing else about it. I owned a '98 winstar and never had these problems and it did not drive the way my 2000 did. Right now the van is sitting in my garage, with a broken transmission and I cannot get help from Ford. I lease the van and I refuse to pay for repairs on a van, that Ford should be resposible for. My lease is almost over and they should back their product up. I put alot of extra money in this van to keep it well maintained. I feel Ford should help me.

I was driving up an incline when my 2000 Windstar van made a very loud noise and suddenly stopped in the middle of the street. I turned the van off for a minute or so then re-started the vehicle and attempted to proceed forward but the van started going in reverse instead. I had to have that Windstar with apprximately 43,000 miles towed home because it would not go forward. I have contacted Ford motor CO. Customer service to no avail. All they could tell me was that the van has more than 36,000 miles so they we're not responsible for the expense of replacing the transmission. The van is at a Ford dealer at this very moment. It is estimated that the cost to replce the transmission will exceed $2000. 00 . I now know that there have been numerous complaints about the Ford Windstar 2000 transmissions please have something done about this problem before some one dies.

Failure Date: 08/21/2001

Transmission failure at 68000+/- miles. No previous problems. Traveling on interstate at 70 mph, heard loud noise, got off at next exit. Sounded like engine dropped out and was dragging on ground, van was jumping. Made it to a parking lot at which point it would not engage in drive or reverse. Dealer didn't know what caused transmission failure, questioned dealer if this is common, "not common, but can't say it doesn't happen" reapir would be $3000. 00. Called 3 transmission shops for pricing, when told it was a Windstar all new what the problem was, down to the noise it made! repairs at independant shops ran $1500. 00.
