Side/rear Glass Problems of Ford Windstar - part 1

2001 Ford Windstar sport minivan was parked. One person entered thru the drivers side sliding door and pushed the button to open the sliding door on the passenger side. Loud popping noise was heard and rear passenger side window exploded. Large chunks of glass were shattered both inside and outside the car. Minor cuts from the glass were sustained. Window was replaced at my expense.

Passenger side window inploded while I was driving vehicle. Police report indicated no sign of vehicle being hit by object. There was no sign that window was chipped or cracked. Ak.

During the summer of 2003 while driving one evening, the rear window of my 2002 Ford Windstar shattered (believing it to be caused by hooligans, the police were notified). The rear window was replaced by the dealer-recommended glass installers using the oem recommended parts. Approximately 18-months after replacement of the window, the vehicle was rear-ended necessitating replacement of the entire hatch. This replacement was made by the dealer. This evening (7/14/05), while the vehicle was parked in the garage, the rear window again shattered.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Windstar. The contact states that the driver's side rear window exploded. No one was around the vehicle at the time of the incident.

2000 Ford Windstar driver side window shattered. The passenger side sliding door window shattered but did not break. There was no evidence on the glass of any sort of impact. It was still intact and perfectly flat (no indentations, marks, scuff etc).

Rear window blew out for no apparent reason.

Rear hatch window exploded while waiting to pull into disabled parking--sending glass throughout vehicle and embedding glass in my head as well as causing stroke symptoms. . . With 18 recorded incidents this is a defect that should be investigated and Ford should be charged for this condition with rear hatch window.

My wife entered the car through the driver door. After starting the car, she heard a loud "pop". Then felt a cool breeze and noticed the rear window was mostly gone. A semicircle in the center of the window had blown out. The rear windshield wiper was hanging inside the van. The window had not been cracked or scratched and there was no ice on it. The temperature was around 45 degrees.

While parked in a driveway, without ignition running, on a rainy, 60-degree day, rear window exploded for no reason. Luckily, there were no kids in the back seat or the driveway, as this could have been tragic. It was quite an explosion, as the largest piece of glass was the size of a silver dollar.

I went out and started the van so it could warm up and then went in to get my daughter ready for her dentist appointment. The van had warmed approximately 25 min when we got in. I was backing out of the drive way and noticed there was frost on the rear lift gate window, not a lot just enough to decrease my visibility, so I turned on the rear defroster. Approximately 1 mile down the highway there was a loud explosion sound followed by glass shattering, causing me to slam the brakes and pull over to the side of the road. I then realized that the rear lift gate glass had shattered out. Fortunately no other cars were on the road at the time and no one was injured just frightened. I called Ford customer service and spoke with a gentleman there. I was told he could not do anything that it would be up to the dealer as to whether they would replace it or not. I then called the local dealer and spoke with a gentleman there who said he would contact the service manager and get back with me. He phoned later that day and said that they would not replace the window, I would have to have it done myself. So I did. I decided to do some investigation on this matter and found that there was a recall on some 2000 Windstar's concerning the back glass, and many complaints from others who had theirs to shatter out as well. Some for no apparent reason. I have since contacted the Ford motor CO. To tell them of the problem and asked to be reimbursed the money for the back glass as I felt that we should have received a recall and if that many people had the same problem that it was a safety issue. I was told that they would not reimburse us for the glass because ours did not have a recall on it. I have also filed a claim with the dispute settlement board and I am waiting on their decision. Is there anything else I can do. Ford does not seem to care.

Liftgate windshield blew out. Car had been sitting in the garage for hours. Cause unknown. If children were present some one could have been injured. *akconsumer pulled out of the garage, drove approximately 35 feet and stopped. Driving again less than 40 feet and the liftgate window blew out.

While sitting curbside on the street in my front yard, the rear window of my Ford Windstar blew out. It was about 10:00 am on a 75 degree morning. My wife and neighbor were in the front yard and witnessed the event. Ford denied a problem and forced us to go through our insurance to fix the problem. Luckily the car was not being driven on the road.

Consumer was backing up while going 5mph. Then, vehicle back ended, hitting an "l" shape pole. Tailgate window shaterred. Tailgate was hit right below the window when it shattered. Manufacturer didn't refer consumer to dealer.

While driving 10 miles per hour, rear tailgate glass window exploded. It was raining out. Road conditions were wet, smooth, paved surface. Glass shattered and flew everywhere, inside vehicle and outside vehicle. Loud explosive noise. It was extremely frightening. Rear window exploded while traveling 20 mph on a bumpy dirt road. The majority of the shattered glass came inward covering the right side of the rear passenger seat. This is a major safety problem, why are the side windows not covered under the current Ford recall of 2000 Windstar windshields and liftgate glass because of the bonding problem?.

While traveling 35 mph heard a loud bang. Rear passenger's side glass on cargo door had shattered. Corners of window were broken off. Window was still intact. Contacted dealership, and informed by mechanic that problem was normal.

Glass on rear side window exploded ,spraying glass onto the back seat of vehicle which could have caused injuries. Glass should be shattered proof. The thermal and mechanical internal stress while manufacturing caused the window to explode.

While traveling at highway speed of 50 mph rear windshield exploded for unknown reason, and caused glass to shatter outward. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that this was an insurance issue. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

I am a letter carrier for the united states postal service in whitestone, NY. We have 33 1998 Ford Windstars in our fleet. I have noticed 3 recurrent problems in our vans, in the three years that we have had them. First, the vehicles have manual crank windows, not power windows. The driver side window regulator has failed on several vehicles, perhaps 6 of them, and on a few of them, failed more than once. There has got to be better material used in these window regulators for the future. The failure rate is really unacceptable. The second problem that I have noticed, is a squealing noise coming from the front suspension. I have heard this on many vehicles so it seems that this is also an engineering defect. The third recurrent problem is a strange one. When the weather gets warm, the computer reads that there is an open door, yet all of the doors are securely locked. The reminder chimes will ding, the icon will appear on the dash, and the interior lights stay on. Strangely enough, when the speed is over 15mph, the chimes will stop dinging, but the dashboard icon will stay lit. One of our vehicles has been to the shop 8 times for this problem, and they still can't figure out what the problem is! if I see these recurrent problems on a small sample of 32 vehicles, I can only imagine that the same problem must happen all over the country wherever Windstars are being used. While the van was parked in the driveway, rear window on the passenger's side just blew out for no apparent reason. The problem was reported to the dealership. Window will be replaced under owner's insurance. Owner concerned about a possible defect in the glass.
