The valve on the rack and pinion steering dried out and now leaks. The entire rack and pinion steering system must be replaced now at a cost of $600. The mechanic told me that it is the 4th Windstar he has seen with this same problem in the last two weeks. I contacted Ford about this problem and they logged it in but are doing nothing for me at this time.

This vehicle has the same problem with rack and pinion steering as stated in recall # 97 v165 000. But, this vehicle is not included in recall due to VIN.
While driving vehicle will pull, there will be clicking noise. Then, will lose steering. Contacted dealer. Rack and pinon steering went out.
Ford is saying its my responsibility cause the warranty has lapsed but the car is only three years old. No safety defec tlisted.
It was hard to steer vehicle, and it was noisy. Consumer went to an independent mechanic who found that fluid in rack and pinion was very dirty. Shaft bearings and gears were damaged by fluid again after they test drove vehicle. Consumer contacted Ford regarding recall 97v165000/manufacturer's recall 97s85. But this vehicle was not included, due to VIN.
While driving, consumer could heard a noise coming from steering, just like when power steering was low in fluid, consumer then took vehicle to two different mechanics, they said that problem was with rack and pinion steering that had a leakage. Manufactrurer was contacted at the time, but could not provide any other help.
The power steering on this vehicle went out as my wife was rounding a curve. She described it as going off and coming back on. When it stiffened up, she turned harder and it loosened up fast. This caused her to go partially off the right side of the road. She got it home and it would hardly turn while in the driveway. Power steering fluid is leaking from the right side rack and pinion boot. A Ford dealer showed me article no. 01-5-6 dated March 8,2001 that discusses this issue and states it is for information only. Thank you for your time and help.

Upon visual inspection consumer noticed fluid on ground and vehicle would make a whining noise. Vehicle was taken to dealer, and consumer was notified that rack and pinion steering was broken.

Rack and pinion steering assembly was not working properly. When turning to left or right there was loud grinding noise. Contacted garage, and garage ordered a new part, problem was remedied. The original equipment failed after two years and poor design is the cause. The consumer believes because of numerous failures of this equipment there should be a recall.

Consumer complained about having problems with vehicle, rack an pinion steering locking.
Rack and pinion steering may have a damaged input shaft bearing from a service bulletin owners letter # 97s85 . Also, bulletin was given by the dealer. Consumer's vehicle was experiencing similar problems, but Ford stated nothing could be done until there was a recall.
