Driving and the passenger side airbag went off with no warning and almost caused me to run into a street pole.
Current symptom: service airbag message comes on periodically when driving. The light goes off when I tighten the driver's side airbag wire harnesses. The new fix per recall bulletin no. 14030b: dealers will remove the driver and passenger side air bag wiring harness connectors and splice and solder the wires together. The old fix before the formal recall: dealers removed the passenger side air bag wiring harness connectors and spliced and soldered the wires together. Prior to the 2014 recall, gm thought that only the passenger wire harness was faulty. In 2011 I participated in gm's voluntary fix (just the pass side) before the formal recall now gm states that my vehicle doesn't qualify for the correct recall fix of both wire harnesses. They strongly recommend I pay $350 to have the wire harness repaired the way the recall outlines.
While driving on the highway, both side air curtains deployed without provocation. It was frightening. I notified GMC. They inspected the vehicle that has no evidence of rollover whatsoever. They have told me that they will not concede any malfunction. Because of this, the repair is not totally my responsibility because my insurance will not cover it because there was no accident.
I made a previous complaint filed here under NHTSA id number: 10765088. The local garber GMC dealership sealed the sunroof and cleaned the clogged hoses that drain water from the roof. They also replaced the passenger side airbag for a total of $600. They gave a guarantee that there would be no more leaks. On November 18 the car began leaking from the front passenger side airbag area and water poured from the roof onto the glove compartment when I made a full stop. Currently awaiting a return call from the service manager of GMC dealer. I have video of the problem. I was driving in the rain from one college campus location to another, in other words many stop and go and side streets at 30 mph or less. The car made squealing noises as well which happened last time too (September of this year).
It had rained the night before and I came out to start my car and noticed that my driver side airbag was leaking water and there was a puddle of water on the floor board and water was dripping from my emergency brake. It has done this several times since then and I'm afraid my airbag won't work properly if I was ever in a wreck.
My passenger side airbag only shows that it is "on" about half the time that someone is sitting in the passenger seat. It seems like it works for someone over 200 lbs. , but hardly ever works for someone less than 150 lbs. Most of the time when my 150 lb. 14-yr-old is seated in the passenger seat, the passenger side airbag displays, "off. " this occurs while driving or stationary. I have called gm and they won't pay for fixing it, but highly recommend that I pay to have it fixed.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that the side air bags suddenly deployed after turning the vehicle at approximately 2 mph. There were no warning indicators prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that it would take two weeks to repair. The contact was on a trip at the time, so she pushed the air bags back in and continued driving the vehicle. She took the vehicle to her local dealer and had it repaired. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current and failure mileages were approximately 23,000.
Our 2008 GMC Acadia was purchased in October 2008. A few months later we took the car in for service because the passenger side airbag would intermittently go off when an adult was in the seat. The light would never come on when our son, then 100 lbs, sat in the seat. Because of him, we were able to duplicate the problem. Had the car in for service four more times over these past two years for the same reason. At one point, the dealership even had one of their employees, 27 year old man, approx. 125 lbs. , sit in the seat - light never came on. They had him sit on a board, straight up, get out, turn the car off then on, get back in etc. (it was ridiculous) . . Light never came on. We have been told "cannot duplicate the problem," "don't have people who don't set it off sit in the seat. " the light will be on for some people and then shut off while you are driving down the road. You can bounce up and down and shift around, but the light does not come back on. Our son, today 112 lbs, 5'7", still never turns the passenger seat airbag on and we are still told "there is no problem. " we have spoke to GMC headquarters and they will not help because the dealership says there is no problem. We asked what would happen if we took the car to another dealership at this point and they found a problem. Headquarters said they would not cover the cost of repair because it could be a new problem. We intend to take it to another dealership, but wonder why we have to. We have other problems with this car as well, but not as serious as this one. We do not feel safe in our supposed 5 star safety rating car. We no longer want this car and will never buy GMC again.
