At first start the first gear slips this has been going on for 2 years. Is been serviced 3 times and no one seems to know what the problem is. The services tech did discover the issue but couldn't figure out what the problem is. I only have 19,000 mile and its on warranty I'm hoping this matter can be resolved. After 5 years and 2 months of ownership of this vehicle, at ~52,000 miles it began to develop a shudder in the driveline, that I originally ascribed to an imbalanced rear wheel. After checking the rear wheels for balance, that cause was ruled out. I took the vehicle back to the GMC dealer where I had purchased it new. They claimed that the cause of the problem was a defective transmission fluid that somehow became contaminated with water. They offered to flush the entire transmission and install new 100% synthetic transmission fluid for a cost of $770. When I complained about a vehicle with 52,000 miles developing transmission problems the dealer consulted with GMC, and then agreed to flush and replace the allegedly defective fluid without cost. Upon further investigation, it appears as though the origin of the issue is not due to the nature of the fluid, but rather the use of an undersized torque convertor in this 8-speed transmission, which began in the 2017 model year. The smaller size and inadequacy of this torque convertor design is the root cause of this shudder, which not only has presented itself in the 2017 GMC, but also in corresponding GMC/Chevrolet models using the same transmission. The danger of a transmission failure can have catastrophic safety consequences for the driver, passengers as well as the motoring public, not to mention a very large transmission replacement charge for the owner. There is currently a class action lawsuit in the state of California for this notorious "chevy shake. ".

Driving and the stabilitrak warning comes on as well as the power steering warning. Later after the vehicle is turned off it will not restart (no crank, no start) and there is no communication with the ecm until it has had the battery disconnected for an extended period. This is very dangerous losing power steering and stabilitrak while driving is going to cause an accident. I would like to see a recall on the 2016 like there is on the 2015 with this same issue. I have not had the issue repaired yet. Waiting to get it into a shop who tells me they will likely need to replace the rack and pinion on this truck to correct the issue.

When coming to a stop the truck lunges forward like you have been bumped from behind and you can hear and feel it! when going forward the truck shift fine.

When cold the transmission slips badly causing a loss of power that has caused me to narrowly avoid being struck from behind by another vehicle. The slippage can be severe. The transmission appears starved for fluid. After completely warmed up the problem goes away. It is clearly a factory defect that gm is aware of and refuses to fix.
January 25, 2021 - transfer case module internal electrical failure. February 16, 2022 - 4-wheel drive transfer case encoder motor sticking/failure. Computer codes c0396 and c0387.

The system failure is the power steering control module rack and components the safety risk is loss of power steering assist, no traction control, stabilitrak message on dash, abs and traction control lights is on, don't feel safe to drive. The problem is confirmed by a dealer. The component has not been inspected. Yes, there are warning messages on the dash, and they appear in February 2022. A loss or reduction in power steering assist may increase the risk of a crash. In my opinion, this issue has to be solved and fixed by the dealer at no cost to the customer.
While driving the vehicle, the power steering suddenly went out. My teenage son was driving and luckily he's had training on this in driver's ed or it could have caused a major accident. It has since happened to me while on the freeway and while going up our driveway. I took it into the dealership where I purchased it and they could find nothing wrong, but clearly something is wrong with the wire harness or power steering. I suspect the parts used were part of an earlier recall on GMC Canyon's as the recall ended with vehicles only a month older than mine.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle failed to respond when the accelerator pedal was depressed; instead the vehicle would jerk forward. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact had driven the vehicle to a local dealer, who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed by the dealer of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.
The transmission has a rough shift from 1st to 2nd, whether it is upshifting or downshifting, and isn't always predictable. This rough shift often feels like a lurching forwards when it shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st it feels like something hits me in the back and shoves me forward. The 1st to 2nd often makes me feel out of control of the vehicle and while it hasn't endangered anyone as of yet, I am concerned that it will push my into the car in front of me one day. The 2nd to 1st shift also causes me concern for how it may cause me a neck injury if I'm not always focused when I'm close to that shift point. The problem has not be reproduced by a dealer or independent service center, though I do plan to take it when I have the time in the near future. The problem has not been inspected by anyone. There are no warning lights, messages, or other symptom to indicate the problem will occur.
When rolling to stop signs or red lights, the vehicle occasionally fails to downshift properly and will attempt to continue pushing the vehicle when trying to stop. On multiple occasions, the vehicle acts as if it cannot be stopped due to the transmission failing to downshift. One must aggressively apply the brakes to get the vehicle to come to a stop. Unable to have the vehicle checked out at a local dealer, due to being backed up for weeks when trying to have it looked at. No visual indication/warning is given when this happens. There is a current class action lawsuit for models up to 2019, but this needs to be extended to 2020 models as well, as multiple online forums discuss this issue being prevalent in newer models of the 8-speed transmission.

Key is not pulling out of ignition after truck has been put in park. Mechanic has replaced the shifter twice, and yet the problem is more pronounced. The dealership (anthony GMC) has now stated there is no problem, and yet the key wont come out for them either.
I purchased this truck used about 5000 miles ago and it now has 26,800 miles and when you put it in park the key will not come out. You have to keep starting and shutting off and eventually it will come out. I have read alot of complaints about this and nothing is being done at gm. They should be ashamed of themselves for a substantial issue and they want to charge the customer for there issue.
At highway cruising speed I am experiencing a shake or a shutter coming from the transmission.
•water coolant valve, and torque converter. •my truck temp gage will fluctuate towards red line and back to normal. Torque converter caused my vehicle to shake, vibrate, slow accelerating, made it seem vehicle will shut off on highway or in heavy traffic. •I went to several mechanics, including the dealerships and they fixed my water coolant valve but issue persisted, the dealerships said my truck was running fine until I had requested to ride along with mechanic, that's when he guessed it would be torque converter. •has not been inspected, just test drove and replaced by mechanic •no lights indicated on dash board and I felt the shake and vibration around 08/01/2021 and reported to dealership. The water temp gage was reported back in Nov 2018 but the problem still persist.
The vehicle hesitates and shifts harshly as if it will stall at low speed acceleration leaving my driveway and when going forward from a full stop at red light to green. Very jerky ride, uneven acceleration, fear of stalling.

Ignition key randomly will not release from switch. The key is stuck in the ignition in the accessory position which in turn kills the battery. As far as I can tell (and I have read about and experienced this problem for many months) the root cause is the gear shift assembly or part # 23397472. It is not reliably returning the confirmation, to the solenoid lock on the ignition switch, that the transmission is in park reliably. For the first time last w/e my dealer admitted this is a problem and that replacing 23397472 usually resolves the issue. I need gm to take responsibility and activate a recall.
Have had truck in shop several times, currently in the shop and has been there for almost 3 weeks nobody seems to know what the problem is. Vehicle losses power and goes into a limp mode. Temperature gauge keeps failing, exhaust break does not work, ac cuts out often and does not work often, keeps trying to clean exhaust filter over and over again and again.
The contact owns a 2015 GMC Canyon. The contact stated while the vehicle was stationary, the service 4wd warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure however, no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 44,430.
The contact owns a 2018 GMC Canyon. The contact stated that on various occasions while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle was shaking. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics; however, the mechanics were unable to duplicate the failure. The tires were and balanced. The contact stated that the failure was reoccurred. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle back to another independent mechanic, it was determined that the transmission and torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I am the owner of a 2020 Canyon sle that was purchased in June of 2020. The vehicle has about 20,000 mile on it currently. I have been experiencing a "lag" on acceleration after coming to a stop. This feels like the transmission isn't down shifting all the way. At time when accelerating from a stop the truck will act as it is in a high gear then suddenly slam into a first gear. I have take my truck to jessup GMC in palm springs and they say the tech can not reproduce the problem. This sounds like the same issue the 2015-1019 models have in reference to bulletin: 18-na-355 dated August 2019.
Vehicle frequently shuts off during braking or while stopped and must be restarted before the vehicle can operate again. Vehicle experiences violent gear changes and significant lagging during periods of moderate acceleration at low speeds. Gear changes result in either severe unresponsiveness and a general lack of acceleration or an aggressive gear change that jerks the vehicle and spins the tires.
Power steering assist shuts off while driving on normal.
I'm the owner of a newly bought (6/5/2020 purchased date) 2020 GMC Canyon. I took my truck into the dealership and complained that I have experienced transmission issues when downshifting or accelerating. My most common issue is shuddering when the truck accelerates and sudden jerking when downshifting gears when driving up an incline or even coming to a complete stop. The dealership said they haven't had any problems with the 2020 Canyons and unless it reads a code there's nothing they can do. Gm said tell the customer to drive it and we will call if we get any further information. This is a serious problem. I was driving the vehicle and because of the sudden jerking and transmission & or engine issues with the vehicle the rpms reved up to over 4500 rpms and I was stuck out in the middle of a lane and could not go anywhere. I had cars avoiding me so that way they would not hit me head on or on the side of my truck. This is a serious and fatal accident waiting to happen and the issue is gm knows about it because it happened with their 2015- 2019 colorado and cannon series. Despite many complaints and numerous lawsuits about these serious issues, there are currently no ongoing investigations regarding transmission and engine defects for these vehicles within gm for the 2020 canon. I have paid almost $50,000 for a vehicle that should have a lemon law put on it because gm knows they are producing bad transmission/engines and not doing anything about it. I asked gm corporate and the local dealership what am I supposed to do when I'm in another situation where the vehicle does not want to get in gear and is shaking and shuttering and jerking and revving up the rpms and the next time. I said I probably wouldn't be so lucky as to having people avoid me and then me and my daughter wind up in a head on collision and we don't make it out alive.
Service 4wd message again appears. When driving and switching into 4wd received this message. Third time, needs "reprogramming" . Filed complaint with gm about a design flaw and no satisfaction.
My 2018 GMC Canyon slt shudders alot. It is not constant but it is often. It sort of feels like you're driving over rumble strips. I do not feel it at highway speeds, just driving around town. It's especially prevalent when going up hills. To me, it feels like a transmission issue. When I did a google search, I found out it's a known problem. I contacted my dealer and they were familiar with it asking if I had a transmission fluid change yet. I told them I had not and they scheduling me for that service in a couple weeks. I am not happy that my 2 year old $40k plus truck has a transmission problem at 25k miles.
My GMC Canyon has only 35,000 miles. It started shaking, shuddering frequently, and having hard shift when changing gears, specially when speeding down. It feels similar to drive over the street lines with a similar sound. There is a strong sound coming from the transmission when fast shifting happened from high to low or when stop at the stop light. It is like the engine wants to leave from the body of the truck. This vibration is also felt when driving at low speed or low gear and the truck is demanding more power, but the transmission does not control that demand. It is like not communication between the transmission and the engine.
Truck jerks and makes loud noises when going up incline when transmission is shifting and constantly shifting even at low speed.
Ignition will not fully turn off and release key when truck is placed in park. I'm addition ignition and key become very hot to the touch after driving for over 20 minutes (temp outside is cool 50-60). Truck will eventually turn off and release the key after restarting and shifting through all gears multiple times (turning off, back on, shifting, etc. ). Already attempted cleaning keys (both sets) with no change in behavior.
Traveling down city street approx 35mph vehicle unexpectedly shut off, dash went dark but infotainment system continued to work. Loss of all power. Brakes shuttered when attempting to come to a stop. Put the vehicle in park, turned it off, and back on. Vehicle drove normally after that.
Hi. This is my second formal complaint regarding intermittent loss of power steering, traction control, and stability control on my 2015 GMC Canyon. There have been recurring temporary losses of the aforementioned vehicle capabilities while the vehicle is in motion, leading to severely degraded vehicle performance, handling, and traction. In every case, warnings lights have displayed immediately before the loss of control. These lights have also 'turned-off' or reset when the vehicle was restarted. I have repeatedly brought my truck into authorized GMC service appointments soon after the warning lights and performance failures, or in one instance as the warning light was actively illuminated. Each time, the service department was not able to recreate the issue or pull any relevant service codes related to the problem. Needless to say, I do not believe the root cause issue has been adjudicated and I think this represents a clear and present danger to drivers of the 2015 GMC Canyon such as myself. While my truck was not part of the past recall, this seems strongly related to the prior steering gear connector recall.
I was taking off from a stop sign and turning right into traffic. Acceleration was moderate while completing the turn where I had to reduce the throttle to prevent the tires from spinning. The transmission shifted into too high of a gear as a result and did not downshift when 50% plus throttle position was applied. Engine had lack of power. I had to stomp it to the floor to get it to downshift. By this time traffic was coming up on me fast because of the excessive delay trying to get the transmission to respond. The truck has the most current software updates based on what the dealership told me.
Vehicle has frequent slow acceleration when entering highways. I have to step on the accelerator hard to have the engine pick-up speed, which leads to the engine over accelerating. When I slow down on sharp road turns and accelerate to pickup speed the transmission shifting the gear hard (making a thump sound). Have gone to dealer at merced GMC and turlock Chevrolet. Both state car is running the way GMC manufactured it.
Vehicle stalls then jerks forward when accelerating and decelerating. Jerking causes brief loss of control as vehicle lurches forward while transmission attempts to catch up. This occurs at any moment while driving (uphill, downhill, turning, city streets and highways) seems to occur most when speeds are under 60 mph. Causes very unsafe conditions and check engine light goes on and off. Occurred today and has occurred almost everyday since I've owned the vehicle. (2 years).
Truck stalls as if in neutral after starting. Unfortunately, I have to let this truck run for t least 10 minutes or more before I can take off. If I start the truck and put it in drive any sooner, truck won't move. Actually, it runs then send to slam (very hard jerk) into drive, studders, then functions normal. I took it back to dealer and they say there has been multiple complaints about these trucks. I also was told gm put a statement out about these complaints and said there is nothing they can do to fix, in so many words. Dealer say it will go away. I've had this vehicle since July 4 2019 and still happening almost everyday.
