27 problems related to equipment have been reported for the 2004 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2019

The transmission started to slip, noticed it starting to have issues getting up to proper speed without slipping and trying to stall, and was told by previous owner whom I'm purchasing it from that there is a possible issue with the transfer case as well, as it engages it's 4 wheel drive without me touching it, tried to service the transmission and put fresh fluid and a new filter in to see if it would help and now it can only go as fast as 40 to 55 before it starts to slip pretty bad. I have a baby on the way due in the next couple weeks and with it slipping and dropping speed it can cause me to end up getting hit and I don't want to put mine, my child, or any of my other passengers in danger.

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

My mechanic said parts of my frame were missing and it was rusted enough that it could not be repaired. I originally though my rear u-joint was going out. Can't fix it, can't sell it. It only has 170,000 miles an is in great shape otherwise.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2019

Front passenger seat caught on fire from the seat heater. The vehicle parked and turned off. It was parked in a high school parking lot while my daughter was in school. We contacted GMC, but they said it there was nothing they could do. There was something that went wrong for it to just catch fire. Can you help us in anyway at all.

My 04 GMC Envoy was having problem with the battery not holding a charge I went and purchased a new battery at autozone installed the new battery after the install we went to drive our car and the ac would only blow through the defroster vents and floor vents. I went online and looked at many websites forms and youtube videos with the same complaints of other owners stating the same thing happen to them after replacing the battery. I have found over 5000 complaints of the same issue this seems to bee a known issue I believe this needs to be recalled now my ac will not work because of a known issue with Envoys as well as trailblazers.

Going down the road to work my airbag light comes on and wont go off and now I cant get a inspection sticker there was no reason for my light to come on unless there is something wrong with vehicle!!.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2015

My rear passenger door won't latch. It was opened and then wouldn't latch again. I have been told by the dealership that it is the latch assembly. There is/was a recall for the exact problem for the 2002 and 2003 GMC Envoy. The latch is not latching properly on the rear passenger side.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

After finishing shopping, I went to my car and opened the back door to put my merchandise , as soon as the door opened about 12 inches, the glass blew up and shattered everywhere. I've owned this SUV for 2 years now and never had any issue with the back door, it was shocking how a glass would shatter like this. In addition, it is very expensive to replace the glass ($500 and up).

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2015

The cruise control is intermittent.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2015

As I was driving in cruise control speed off 55 mph vehicle begin to make a dragging sound. After stopping and placing vehicle into park and then putting gear back into drive vehicle began to go into reverse mode. I then tried every other gear 1,2,3 drive the vehicle continued to still go into reverse. The car still turns on without a problem but will not move forward when in drive.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2015

I picked up my kids and niece from school and was visiting at my brothers house for a few hours (3 to be exact) when my kids and I went to leave my rear window was shattered. I filed a police report and the officer could not see any reason for my window to shatter like it did.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

We purchased this vehicle brand new, we have always highly maintained this vehlcle. We have a washed it weekly at our local hoffman car wash. We have a monthly service which includes wash hot wash and under carriage wash, I feel such a expensive well maintained vehicle such not have a rusted frame. We noticed at around 50,000 miles it was starting to rust underneath. We just had this vehicle serviced and the mechanic told us it is going to be a safety issue soon. We feel gm should be held responsible in this situation.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2014

The speedometer and tachometer of the SUV began to indicate incorrect readings. The speedometer works fine until we go on the highway and travel with the cruise control set between 65-70. Then they will read the incorrect speed for a week or so then start working fine again. The tachometer needle just "hangs. " I talked to 2 different repair shops who adviced me that this is a common problem with enovy's and trailblazers. The cost to do this is over $500 or more. It appears that several other 2004 GMC Envoy owners are experiencing this same problem. A recall should be in order. When I talked to the repair shops they said before they can correct the issue under my extended warranty is to see it happen. Each time I had an appt set it would start working before the appt date so there is nothing they can do. Very irritated that GMC doesn't address this now.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

While driving with passengers in car, smoke started to come from the floor area in the back seat area. Immediately drove car to a car service shop to have inspected to determine where smoke was coming from. The car technician was unable to determine where the smoke was coming from other than from the floor area in the back. Have been replacing a radiator because the engine keeps running hot. Had a new radiator installed. Then began to have problems with the anti-freeze disappearing from the radiator and the reservoir. Took car in and had a pressure test performed. The mechanic was knowledgeable of the problem and identified that the anti-freeze was leaking from the rear heater core. I was asked if I heard a clicking sound in the inside of the car coming from the back. I told him I heard it off and on. It was determined that that was were the smoke came from earlier.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

Failure of the drivers door module. Power windows work, but nothing else. . No driver 1/2 option buttons, not heated seats. .

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

The gas tank has a lose connector that leaks and allows fumes to escape.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2013

My car is leaking gas and I. Can only put 20 or 30 dollars worth in at a time where most of it ends up on the ground. There is also a very strong gas smell. I'm taking it in to be fixed but this is obviously a problem since I just read that other owners are having this problem so there should be a recall before someone is seriously hurt my check engine light also comes on for a while and then goes off. These are problems that require a recall.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Around August 2012, the speedometer and tachometer of the SUV began to indicate incorrect readings. The speedometer goes weeks working fine, then will read the incorrect speed for months. The tachometer needle just "hangs. " the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the dash cluster would need to be changed at a cost of at least $600, possibly more. The dashboard cluster was not changed. It appears that several other 2004 GMC Envoy owners are experiencing this same problem. A recall should be in order.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

One day my sunroof worked and the next day it would not. It was stuck in the in the open position (not fully open, but when the front end raises an inch or so). I took it to a gm certified mechanic and they said I would need a whole new assembly and quoted me $2,100. The dealership and gm notified me that they would not help me with this defect at all. My car is in excellent condition with only 85,000 miles on it, but it is only worth $5,000 and I paid over $14,000 for it in 2009 when I bought it from a gm dealership. I cannot afford to lose $2,100 on this vehicle. And this is not the first issue that I have had. When I drove it home from the dealership the whole instrument panel failed. They fixed that. Then a year later, when I was driving home with my new born, the entire car shut down while in motion going 45 miles per hour. The dealership said that it was a problem with the computer and the warranty would not cover it, but it would cover a restoration of the computer. Then when I went to get my vehicle the refused to let me take it until I paid $200. My vehicle has shut down while driving since that and can barely maintain idling at traffic lights at times. Now back to the sunroof, after not being able to afford to fix it the mechanic took out the sunroof and just set it in the frame so at least water would not get in when it rained. However, it is just sitting in there and can easily be lifted out and may even get blown out on the freeway. When exactly will this become a safety hazard? when my sunroof blows off on the freeway and causes a fatal car accident? or when my car completely shuts down on the middle of the freeway and my children and I get killed in a pile up? gm has been convicted of neglecting to recall vehicles with safety issues recently. Clearly, gm refuses to protect its customers. Please help protect consumers and do something about this.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

The ignition began to stick -- could not turn the key all of the way to the off position. Had to jiggle it several times before you could turn it so you could take the key out of the ignition. At the same time, you could not take the car out of the "park" position. The shifter would stick. None of these happened when the car was moving. Only when parked. Also, beginning Jan. 1, 2014, the rear tail lights went out in the car. Sears said there was something wrong with the wiring in the back.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

My GMC Envoy stalls out when I stop at traffic lights. I then have to put it in park to restart the vehicle. Although test meters/equipment have been used to find the cause for the unexplained stall is still unknown. This happens apx. Once every (2) months. When the engine stalls out the "check engine light" comes on and last month the " reduced engine power" light also came on and the Envoy would only move at 3 to 4 mph.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

Not sure when as it has been a while. The odmeter stopped working and I have filed this online a couple of times but never heard back and I have contacted GMC several times and they said they are fully aware of it as they have had several calls regarding it and it is anywhere from 300. 00 to 600. 00 to fix it and it could take a couple of days. To me that is not ok. As much as I paid for my verhicle it should not do this. If GMC is aware of it they should have contacted you guys and a notice should have been sent as I have been researching online and I see several compliants about this issue with peoples Envoys and they get the same uncaring response from GMC. To me that is a problem,.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

I have GMC Envoy xuv slt 2004 model and last year battery light came on and I changed the battery and still red battery light continued and I took it to dealership and charged me 100 dollars to check and was told that nothing is wrong and red light persisted and was told that cluster board needs change but after few weeks red light was gone and than few weeks later glass between passenger cabin and trunk went down and would not work and took it to mechanic and was told that cables are bad and than few weeks later the speedometer started acting up and would show 30 miles when care is idle and would race to 110 miles and than would start showing normal and took it to mechanic and was told that it will cost 500 dollars and two days ago the tail window glass dropped. And reading on line multiple gm car owners and chery car SUV owners have reported similar problems. I think this is a poor work man ship on part of gm and should be recalled or be fixed by gm at no cost to owner. I have lost faith in gm car and probably will not consider .

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2008

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy. The speedometer sticks at various speed readings. I try to see how fast it is going at a dead stop and then add that number to figure how fast I am going. But now when I drive for only a few minutes the speedometer will be pegged at over 120 mph. Searching the internet for answers to fix this problem, it seems that there are several people with the same problem, and several different solutions were tried to fix the problem. I am not going to spend time and money to try a solution that may or may not work. When I went to the dealer they said they would have to replace the entire cluster. If I get the same cluster type back I will have the same problems. Can you help me with this problem? it sounds like you have been getting several complaints concerning this issue. What advice did you give the others with similar problems?.

26 Equipment problem

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2007

2004 GMC Envoy unsafe hitch. Consumer states that clip is supposed to hold the hitch pin in place is so designed to fit over the pin to hold it in place, is not safely design. Consumer is requesting reimbursement. The consumer stated a safer design for the pin and clip would be to have a hole drilled into the pin whereby the clip could be inserted into the hole thereby alleviating the possibility of the clip being jarred loose from the pin. The consumer stated while driving, the trailer slightly went airborne, flipped on the passenger side, then on the drivers side, and the tongue of the trailer started hitting the back of the vehicle. The consumer soon discovered the safety chains had come loose. The manufacturer of the hitch denied the consumers claim. They stated that their product was safe and there was no stress on the clip.
