Four problems related to tailgate hinge have been reported for the 2004 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Tailgate latches on 2004 GMC Envoy xuv keep breaking repeatedly. Unable to open rear of vehicle. Parts have been replaced a number of times and they stop working over and over. If my kids get in the back and get stuck there is no way out the back of the vehicle.
Electrical problems. I have had both rear tailgate sensors go out at the same time. I have the speedometer acting erratically off and on off and on. I have had the starter switch go out twice.
My 2004 Envoy xuv rear tailgate has 2 broken releases in it. As you may already know, the only way to access the rear enclosed part of this vehicle is through the rear door, if there is no rear access, then you cannot get what is in the rear of the vehicle out. In my case, a dog was trapped in the back with no way of getting out the midgate window in the middle of the vehicle is too small to get the dog out. This is a serious issue and could cause many problems as even if there was a access to the rear through the center midgate, some objects could get placed in the rear area that are too large to remove via the midgate and side doors and if the rear tailgate cannot be opened, the objects will never be removed.
The tailgate interlock failed. The tailgate could have fallen off. It was dangling on 1 hinge.
