Road conditions were icy ,car suddenly lost control and slammed into a utility pole. Neither driver side or passenger side airbag deployed.
Side air bags deployed in 2005 Envoy slt xl while driving down highway on four lane road. The car hit a small pot hole in the highway and they deployed. I called state trooper and he couldn't understand why they deployed either. I made a traffic report and carried it to dealership. They contacted gmac and they decline to get involved and said it was a accident. There is no damage to vehicle or wheels on truck. The front seatbelts stuck also. I was not going more then 45 miles per hour. There was a traffic light coming up and I slowed for it.
The check engine light kept coming on and I took it to the dealer for repair and was told "it's ok. Forget it. " on 01-09-2009 while traveling on texas highway 60, I had the cruise control set for 70 mph. Traffic was normal but continually passed me as if I was going slower. I pulled over at a convenience store and parked the vehicle. The speedometer registered 45 mph in park. I continued home gauging speed by the other traffic. The vehicle was parked. On 01-14-2009, my wife and daughter were in the vehicle returning from school. The speedometer appeared to be working. At approximately 3:00 pm while driving home, the electric door locks began to lock and unlock themselves. At the same time, the a/c went to maximum heat and high blower. My wife stopped the vehicle and put it in park. The side curtain air bags deployed, striking my daughter in the left temple resulting in a mild concussion. Onstar notified the police of a collision. I contacted the dealer who referred me to GMC customer assistance. The agent told me that this kind of thing happens when traveling too fast and turning too sharp. An investigator was dispatched to gather computer information and determine if there had been a collision. His results were there was no collision and the bags deployed per command from the vehicle control system based on the vehicle traveling 20 mph and turning too sharp. The vehicle was actually traveling 20 mph on a residential street in a straight line. Turning right would have resulted in going through a fence and left would have put the vehicle in a park. GMC refused to investigate the discrepancies between the computer and the driver's account further. I contacted a local gm dealer who has as much concern about this incident as I do. No repairs have been initiated to date as it is unclear what is at fault. Several gm technicians and service managers believe there is a problem with the vehicle control system but are unable to proceed without approval.
Entering straight stretch of 2 lane hwy. ,I swerved to miss object in my lane and part of adjacent lane. I could not straighten up vehicle. The vehicle rolled and struck a tree. The engine was off and the air bags did not inflate. My door was damaged and had to be cut off to free myself. The Envoy was totaled. My wife's harness did not hold and she was facing the rear between the front seats. The side air bags and front air bags did not work. The vehicle was well maintained with new tires and brakes. I was life flighted, and my wife was carried by ambulance to the hospital where we sustained multiple injuries.

My fiance was driving my 2004 GMC Envoy SUV. While driving reported to be approximately 40 mph; the car in front of her slammed on her brakes, she attempted to brake, swerved to the right to avoid the car in front of her, crashing into a utility pole. She was wearing her seat belt. During this time neither the driver or passenger side airbag deployed. She was taken by ambulance treated for scrapes & bruises, pain, minor injuries, major injuries ruled out by x-rays & CT scans, then released. I understand the theory " if a person is able to walk away from the crash the vehicle did it's job. " my concern was not much of a concern until the responding emt's, officers, and mechanic at the place where the car is currently stored all voiced concerns regarding the fact no airbag deployed in this accident. I also became concerned after seeing the damage done to the vehicle. We are not officially sure of the status of the car at this time as we are still waiting to hear from the adjuster. However, the mechanic & responding officer believe it is totaled. The entire front window shattered, passenger side door is ripped off hanging on a thread, the entire front end/grill ripped off, both headlights crushed, the passenger side headlight is no longer there, the passenger side front tire entirely missing along with anything holding it in place, the glove compartment is almost touching the front passenger seat. The passenger seat was pushed back toward the back seat of the car as well. My fiance was alone in the vehicle, the concern is if she hadn't been, what would have happened to a passenger. . . Clear speculation , but the airbag may have been the only saving grace a passenger would have had. We have contacted the dealership, gm, and consumer affairs, and now NHTSA with this concern. Thank you for taking the time to review this report.
The contact stated while driving at 45 mph hit the brakes and the side air bags deployed and knocked him unconscious. He had a friend in the vehicle and he was able to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. There was no collision, and he was unsure whether he ran over anything. The roof lining fell because of the air bag deployment. He sustained head abrasions; he could not hear out of left ear, and could not see properly out of left eye. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they could not touch the vehicle without a gm engineer's approval. He received a history of vehicle at time of purchase, and has since noticed there had been body work done.

2002 GMC Envoy. Consumer complaint for gm side impact airbag sensor system. Consumer states that this system does not deploy the airbags if the vehicle hits a tree, utility pole or other narrow objects. Lawyer wrote in on behalf of the consumer. The consumer was involved in a heavy side impact crash in which his vehicle crashed into a steel pole precisely on the drivers side door that caused catastrophic and permanent brain damage. The consumers lawyer suggested that gm issue a recall for the defective side airbag sensor.
While driving in inclement weather the drivers vehicle hit a patch of black ice sending the vehicle off the road hitting a stone retaining wall head on, neither passenger nor drivers side air bags deployed. Nlm.
The truck was broad sided, and the side airbags failed to deploy.
