GMC Jimmy owners have reported 26 problems related to electrical system (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My son asked me if I could tell what was making a clicking sound inside the 2001 GMC Jimmy. When checking for turn signals, lights, etc, I noticed the brake lights were not working. We have discovered that what least when the clicking noise is heard, there are no brake lights. Other times they work. Davis stanley dealership said all recalls had been fixed. If the recalls were fixed, the replacements apparently have the same problem as the originals. I really do not like the idea that my granddaughter is being driven around in a car that may or may not have brake lights because of a safety engineering problem that gm only had to worry about repairing once even though the same problem happens again after the original repair. Is there a site that will tell who and when the recalls were fixed. Thanks.

While driving on interstate smoke started coming out from the steering wheel and I smelled something burning, I pulled over to make sure the vehicle was not going to start on fire, and found the bottom brake lights were not working but the top center brake light was working. After getting home I researched and found that my GMC VIN# had been included in a recall. But what was replaced and when it was replaced I do not know. It only stated that my VIN # was included, and that no other recalls were in affect at this time. So according to GMC web site there were 2 different recalls for this issue and 3 different parts could be the problem. 1- the brake switch, 2- the multifunction switch and 3- the flasher switch, and to determine which part is the faulty one you have to take it to a mechanic then pay him in this instance between 300. 00 to 400. 00 (which I have not done yet do to I can not afford it) for the new part and his time to replace it. So how can a car manufacturer only have to be responsible for fixing the issue only 1 time when apparently the replacement parts are not any better or redesigned to be better than the original part? I feel that gm or any other car manufacturer should have to replace for free any recalled part for the life of the vehicle. If they would fix the problem the first time it would only have to be fixed 1 time, and would never be an issue again. (and I would not be using my time to file this safety complaint). Better yet how about better engineering and quality control and testing to eliminate recalls all together.
The car was running on south hi 35, before arrive to 51th st, austin, texas. It was Friday, around 10:30, we were in the middle lane going to a medical appointment, when the car stop working, the engine went off. We were two in the car, and we were scare. Thanks god was in the morning, not rush hour, but hi 35 is always busy. We were lucky and found an space between the cars. We just park the car close the exit to go to 51th, but the safety truck which help on hi 35, parked behind us, so it protected us until the tow truck came for us, one and a half hour later.

As I was driving along the air bag light came on. I have seen threads of smoke on 3 or 4 occasions comming from the steering column. The air bag light goes out after a minute and comes on again repeatedly.
GMC Jimmy 2000 fuel gauge not reading the correct amount of fuel . This is a ongoing problem. Running out of gas is a big problem if you don't track mileage. Very unsafe as one could be stranded .
The contact owns a 2001 GMC Jimmy. While examining the vehicle, she noticed that the rear brake lights were inoperable. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the multi-function switch needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 135,000. Updated 05/12/10 the consumer stated there was smoke coming from the steering column and the turn signals were inoperative. Updated 05/17/10.
I was driving a 1998gmc Jimmy from oklahoma city, ok to walters, ok. Everything was great and the car was driving perfectly. I was on the he bailey turnpike on highway marker 30 - I could see the sign and pull off for the faxon exit and the big sign for walters. A few wisps of white smoke appeared and then heavy grey smoke started to billow into my face through the right side vent of the driver's seat. I started to cough and couldn't see so I pulled over to the shoulder of the road. As I got out of the car, I pulled the hood release and ran to the front of the vehicles. Under the hood, half of the engine bay was already burned away - like the bottle for anti-freeze and hoses. . . . The whole engine bay was on fire. The car was gone at that point - there was no way to save it. I ran to the passenger front seat and grabbed a basket that had my census id and I threw it away from the car. I grabbed some cds then too, but they were on fire. The dash was on fire and was spreading into the front seat. I threw the cds in the dirt to extinguish the fire. I grabbed the passenger side door of the back seat and grabbed a hamper with presents for my daughter. I ran to the other side back seat and grabbed the legal papers of census applicants - they were on fire and I snuffed out the fire in the dirt. I grabbed my jean jacket with my military id and driver's license - the back seat and front seat were on fire and I ran away from the vehicle and it fireballed and exploded. Two men from the turnpike maintenance saw me driving - smoking pouring out front he vehicle; they saw me pull out on the shoulder and saw me running to salvage what I could from the burning vehicle. They came to help me and called the fire department and highway patrol. Minor injuries I had smoke inhalation, minor burns to face - soot on hands & feet. Unk mileage. . Read more...

1. Normal driving 2. Abs light on. 3. New wheel bearings. They are not cheap to have them installed twice!!!! light still on. No abs brakes!!!! but I have brakes.
The engine continually misfires. There is a TSB bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in California. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem. Because of this, I only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. It is completely erratic and unpredictable. My speakers turn off and on sporadically. My driver side seat adjuster broke off with little pressure. My steering wheel continuously pulls to the right. This many problems in a vehicle is ridiculous. What a lemon. Especially since I have seen the same exact complaints all over this sight about this specific vehicle.
On 5/24/05 caller was driving at 40 mph on level ground on the highway and the spare tire fell out from underneath the vehicle. The cable that holds the spare onto the vehicle broke and allowed spare to break away and fell onto the highway. The windshield wipers have caused many problems in the past as well. The wipers would start and stop unannounced and had to be repaired and the blinkers would come on and go off on their own. The consumer believed there was a general problem with the electrical system. The car was regularly maintained. Each time the consumer filled the vehicle with gas, the inside of the vehicle would smell like gas and for a couple of days, the gas gauge did not work.

Turn signal and hazard light failure, electric window control failure off and on.
1) car would start, check engine light came on and the gas gauge fluctated back and forth while park and neutral. Took vehicle to be repaired (in excess of $1000+.
Have had multiple problems with no brake lights, hazard lights or driving lights. Vehicle also has been in two front end collisions and air bags did not deploy in either wreck. Vehicle was looked at by a dealer and could not be fixed.
While driving on highway or up hill rpm dropped, and loss of power, service engine light comes on and stays on. Replaced distributor cap and rotor button, helped for one day then happened again.
Vehicle stalls out while going down the road, I was going sixty miles per hour and vehicle just stalled out, going twenty miles per hour and vehicle stalls out. Have had it hooked up to computer and cannot be diagnosed unless it is happening at time of diagnosis. This is a definate safety issue when you are going down road and vehicle just stalls out without warning. This is a constant occurrence.
Consumer states that while driving at any speed on the highway whenever the windshield wipers are used they would stop working without warning. It was later discovered that a bad circuit broad and faulty soldering were the cause of the problem. A recall was issued for the 1997 vehicles but not the 1998. The manufacturer was notified.
The vehicle caught fire, consumer was informed the fire started near the cigarette lighter.
The paint of the car is chipping, the electical is not working (brake lights, turn signals, and interior lights), the windshield wipers are not working (motor), and the fuses keep breaking, and the seat beal buckles are not working as well.
I lost power while driving my 1997 GMC Jimmy on the highway. It just stopped running. I pushed it to the side of the road and called for a tow truck. When we got to the dealer, the vehicle started.
The gas gauge was constantly on full. The tank may be empty but the gauge read full. The dealer stated the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Please describe further. Consumer made numerous repairs on driver's door due to door falling off and water leaking during rain; in addition, front wheel bearing was replaced at 36,676 miles and 43,545 miles on the left and right respectively. Also, repairs on driver's seat recliner. Consumer also discovered rust on the rear hatch, and problems encountered with the heating and cooling system. Electrical problem can't be found on headlights and dash.
Upper & lower ball joint snapped while driving had to replace both along with idler arm pitman arm & tie rod ends , had received notice about possible failure on these when I called GMC they reported my car was not included in this possible recall. Cost of 1500. 00 also fuel pump failed cost of 700. 00 now driver side door is defected will not close , probems with electrical system locks ,windows, lights interior & exterior, wipers will only work occasionally, fuel gauge sticks.
Transmission failed on interstate and the emergency flashers failed, transmission has been replaced on two occasions, the electrical system experiences continual malfunctions (emergency flashers, brake lights, warning buzzer).
Since owning this vehicle, two problems have been chronic. #1 the drivers side window does not fully open nor close without assistance. #2 the blinker sound comes on for no reason and stays on for random lengths of time. Tapping on the brake will turn off the blinker noise for a short time, but it comes back on often. Yes, I have replaced the fuses multiple times.
The vehicle is experiencing multiple electrical problems including the emergengy flasher, brake lights, and warning buzzer. Nlm.
