GMC Jimmy owners have reported 16 problems related to steering (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
For the past several years the engine stops running without warning and will not start for several hours. The gas system has been replaced, new coil and distributor, oil, and still it stops. I have talked to others who have had the same problem and had to park their Jimmy due to the unsafe nature of the problem, the Jimmy has been to 3 dealers who charged a lot of money but never fixed the problem.

While driving my 2000 GMC Jimmy my left side upper ball joint broke. Luckily I had just came out of a sharp corner and my speed was only about 25 mph. A car had just passed in the other direction when my vehicle swerved to the left, halfway into the other lane before I was able to get control of it. Upon inspection, the tire was leaning inward and my brake line was severed. I had to use my emergency brake to stop.

On highway during heavy rain, vehicle left roadway along slight curve by failing to turn front wheels and hydroplaned straight off pavement. Vehicle then left the ground flying downhill, smashed front passenger side bumper into and through 10+ inch tree, spun 90 degrees clockwise before side impacting two 25+ inch trees against driver side door and rear wheel, before coming to a stop (on steep hill held by the trees), totaling the Jimmy. Top of vehicle had to be cut off to free driver. Police originally thought accident was fatality. Vehicle had previously experienced failure to turn after braking lightly, like before entering driveways or parking spaces. Steering would lock in straight position and car had to be shifted to park and restarted before wheel could be turned again. When taken to well known auto shop for this steering issue before accident, shop stated that problem was located in front passenger side and was then repaired.
The engine continually misfires. There is a TSB bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in California. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem. Because of this, I only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. It is completely erratic and unpredictable. My speakers turn off and on sporadically. My driver side seat adjuster broke off with little pressure. My steering wheel continuously pulls to the right. This many problems in a vehicle is ridiculous. What a lemon. Especially since I have seen the same exact complaints all over this sight about this specific vehicle.

I am concerned because I am the third person I know of with GMC Jimmy 99 or newer who had to have upper ball joints, tierod(s) and the right wheel bearing replaced when vehicle was at or just over 3 yrs old. The fact that 2 of the 3 had the problems paid for by GMC dealer, even though vehicle was out of warranty, makes me think gm knew this problem was occurring & chose to address it on an "as needed basis, instead of a recall. My costs were said to be a "gm customer loyalty adjustment". I am confused that my dealer at first said I was to pay for parts only, no labor. Then changed it to labor only, not parts. I noticed afterward that my invoice for the work shows wording that lifetime warranty applies to only customer paid parts. Does that mean since I did not pay for the parts, there is no warranty? I appreciate not having to pay for the repairs, but something definitely smells fishy.
Steering problem; also, current too many systems of the vehicle.
1997 GMC Jimmy - steeling failed while driving at low rate of speed as approaching a curve in road. There was no response in the steering and vehicle suddenly veered off road and crashed into trees.
While pulling into driveway, upper ball joints fell apart without prior warning. Took vehicle to be fixed and was told about recall 01 I 018 000 that deals with a similar problem concerning upper ball joints. Left wheel speed sensor was missing. Replaced inner cv boot.
While making a turn vehicle lost control and hit a tree. Dealer/manufacturer were not notified at this time.

Steering does not return properly.
When you let go of steering wheel, car goes immediately right. The first time the dealer did a wheel alignment and it was okay for a while but then it did it again and we took it back. The second time we took it back to dealer they charged us for a wheel alignment and said we had "curbed" the vehicle but we had not. Now it is doing the same thing again and we do not want to have to pay for another wheel alignment.
While traveling consumer noticed play in steering wheel. Consumer was unable to keep vehicle in traffic lanes.
