1 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

The contact owns a 1998 GMC Jimmy. While driving approximately 75 mph in rainy weather conditions, the front and rear windshield wipers would not work when activated. The driver experienced extremely limited visibility and had to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. He had to wait until the rain slacked up before driving the vehicle to his destination. The vehicle has not been repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 141,000.

2 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1997 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 02/12/2008

Windshield wipers function intermittently at best; have been this way for almost two years now, but have been getting steadily less reliable. Wipers failed recently on I-35s in waco, TX during rain shower; anyone who's driven this stretch of road doesn't have to be told how dangerous a situation that was. Windshield washers are only partially effective (passenger side nozzle is almost totally inoperative); this has been the case for approximately 8 years now. Have tried blowing out line/nozzle without successful remedy; obviously problem lies with system design and/or fluid pump. This problem is an obvious safety hazard, and the "bean counters" at gm need to start realizing that a recall is less costly than a class-action lawsuit. I understand (from perusing this site) that there are numerous complaints against the windshield wiper system. There have already been recalls issued which apply to previous model-year vehicles for this same problem; obviously the recall needs to be extended to include the 1997 models as well. Please pressure gm to do so before someone loses their life because their windshield wipers fail at a critical moment.

3 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1997 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 05/24/2005

On 5/24/05 caller was driving at 40 mph on level ground on the highway and the spare tire fell out from underneath the vehicle. The cable that holds the spare onto the vehicle broke and allowed spare to break away and fell onto the highway. The windshield wipers have caused many problems in the past as well. The wipers would start and stop unannounced and had to be repaired and the blinkers would come on and go off on their own. The consumer believed there was a general problem with the electrical system. The car was regularly maintained. Each time the consumer filled the vehicle with gas, the inside of the vehicle would smell like gas and for a couple of days, the gas gauge did not work.

4 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 12/15/2004

Noted issues with my 98 Jimmy (purchased 12/97)that I have had to repair which I believe were defective parts: 1) 10/00 mileage=57248 replaced faulty ignition switch due to dash board lights not working 2) not repaired to date: wipers have had occasions they did not work. I usually can get them working by turning them on/off a few times. Intermittent mode takes a long time(3-10 seconds) to start running in best scenario. 3) both front reclining seat levers broke off(brittle metal rod)within first 3 years of usage. I have not replaced due to cost of replacing complete seat assemblies is only fix. 4) 12/04 mileage=129,518 throttle choke plate assembly disintegrated partially and jammed throttle open. This almost caused an accident as could not come to a complete stop while car was running. After broken piece worked its way past the valves I needed $1900 in cylinder head repairs.

7 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 10/29/2004

03 v 159 000/gm windshield wiper motor: the wipers worked intermittently during inclement conditions. The dealer was notified and they informed the consumer that the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.

8 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1997 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 08/28/2004

Windshield wipers do not work all the time. I was in a bad rainstorm last night and had to pull off the road because we couldn't see anything. Scary - this is a potential big law suit for GMC if anyone dies in an accident due to this common complaint. My GMC mechanic revealed that this happens on almost all GMC Jimmy's, yet there is no recall to replace the defective part to date. Transmission - slipped badly. I paid to have it replaced and sometimes it still slips. This transmission repair shop said that this is common with the Jimmy, as well as a faulty gas gauge, faulty ball joints and oxygen sensors. I did have to replace the oxygen sensor, but I consider that normal repairs.

9 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 08/25/2004

Windshield wipers malfunctioned. Windshield wipers suddenly went out of line and off the track while engaged. This failure almost resulted in an accident because consumer was driving in a rain storm with reduced driver's visibility. Dealership was contacted.

11 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 07/27/2004

I have a 1998 GMC s-15 Jimmy. I've had a periodic problem with my windshield wipers not working. Sometimes they won't come on at all when I need them; at other times they're working and stop working while I'm driving in the rain. This is extremely dangerous and has left me stranded in places waiting for them to start working again. At other times I've had to continue driving without wipers until I could find a place to pull over. I see from internet forums that this appears to be a common problem. In fact, gm recalled 1994-1997 models to replace the circuit board. However, the 1998 model has the same parts and the same problem, but they will not do anything. The dealer will not acknowledge that there's a problem with them, nor will gm customer service. I'm having this repaired at my own expense, but that does not address the issue of a known problem that could have more serious consequences before a person has an opportunity to get it repaired.

12 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 07/23/2004

Complaint received via e-mail. My windshield wiper blades hung randomly during a down pour. The control wheel on the left blinker shaft did not move them. This almost killed me while driving at 60 mph on the freeway. The dealer said there was no recall on my particular vehicle, but there was on others. Another GMC consumer that came into to dealer had windshield wipers replaced 3 times, but was still having problems. There must be something terribly wrong with this design.

13 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 06/30/2004

On my way to work, my windshield wiper keeps failing. It's almost 100% guaranteed to fail during any rain. It also fails when using the windshield washer. This is very dangerous, as I do only highway driving every day. I know that previous years had the recall, yet the 1998 has not been recalled for fix. I realized this was a problem during the first rain after I purchased my vechicle 2 1/2 years ago. I hope gm is willing to fix this problem soon. I am sincerly considering converting to another maker.

14 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 05/26/2004

While driving in rainy weather, the front windshield wiper failed to work. Please provide more information.

15 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 01/06/2004

The front and rear windshield wipers began to intermittently work. This was over a period of three months and later stopped working all together. Consumer did not take the vehicle to a dealer for any repairs because it was no longer under warranty. The transmission did not shift properly after acceleration for a period of about thirty seconds, and then it shifted into gear. The abs was delayed when applying brake pressure. The brakes locked, and then the vehicle slid. The brakes pads were replaced every three months, this has been ongoing for the last two years. The steering wheel pulled to the right continuously, an alignment was performed a year ago but it did not correct the problem. In January 2004 the vehicle was involved in an accident, it struck a parked car at a speed of about 30 mph and the air bags did not deploy. This was front impact. The consumer has numerous complaints about the vehicle. .

16 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 12/06/2003

When windshield wipers are on intermitent wipe they will automatically just keep wiping as if they were on low/no intermitent. When I try to turn them off, they just keep on going for a good 10 wipes, or sometimes even more. Vehicle has 50,000 miles on it.

17 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 12/01/2003

When windshield wipers are on intermitent wipe they will automatically just keep wiping as if they were on low/no intermitent. When I try to turn them off, they just keep on goingfor a good 10 wipes, or sometimes even more. Vehicle has 69,000 miles on it.

18 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 11/18/2003

1998 GMC Jimmy has faulty wipers, and through some research, there are many others with this problem. GMC should have recalled more than just the 1997 model.

19 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 10/15/2003

Windshield wipers work sometimes when its dry out. Never work when raining or damp. Recall stops at 1997 for GMC Jimmy, but I have a 1998 and have problems. Recall should include 1998 and any other years that have problems. You would think that general motors would have solved this problem a long time ago. It seems as they almost do not care about their customers safety.

20 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 2001 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 10/11/2003

Problems with my 2001 GMC Jimmy have been numerous including ignition switch, wheel bearings, clanking noise, roaring noise, windshield wiper failure, windshield wiper hose failure, battery, a/c, and so on. Currently, my vehicle clanks approximately 15 minutes after turning off the engine and my a/c does not work properly at all times. Dealership consistently says "there's nothing wrong" however I have had the vehicle for 2+ years and I know my car.

23 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

While traveling in inclement weather, the windshield wipers worked intermittently. Gm recalled the 1994-1997 Jimmy's, however the consumer's vehicle was not recalled, even though the vehicle experienced the same problem.

24 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 07/08/2003

Windshield wipers will quit in the middle of a rainstorm. They do this quite often. I pull off the road, open the hood of the car and wiggle the gray wire leading into the windshield motor which seems to get them working again, all the while getting soaked. I proceed down the road a few miles and it does it again. How come the recall is only for GMC Jimmy's through 1997?.

25 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 05/22/2003

Windshield wipers would stop during heavy rains.

26 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

Front windshield wipers occasionally go from intermittent to low speed, or from low speed to stop, or cannot be shutoff in rainy wet weather. Happens almost every time, when front wipers are used in rainy conditions.

Failure Date: 03/14/2003

The windshield wipers failed, which caused poor visibility.

31 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 2000 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 03/04/2003

When the outside temperature falls much (more than ~5 degrees f) below freezing, the windshield wipers fail to operate properly. It appears that they tend to keep a curved shape from resetting against the bottom of the windshield when not in use and do not clear the area directly in front of the driver causing poor visibility. This effect worsens as the temperature falls. A new set of wiper blades (winter blades, made for low temperature) failed to alleviate the problem. The most severe happened on March 4, 2003 the preceding car sprayed a salt/water mixture on the windshield that had to be removed by hand after stopping on the side of the road due to zero visibility.

32 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1996 GMC Jimmy

Consumer's vehicle has experienced the same defect with the windshield wiper as stated in recall #98 v 150 001. The vehicle manufacturing date is outside of the date recalled. Ph scc.

33 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 12/10/2002

I own a 1998 GMC Jimmy, VIN no. 1gkcs13w3w2543504. The windshield wipers do not work most of the time, occasionally work intermittently, and the few times they do work, will stop in mid-cycle blocking view through the windshield. GMC has recalled all Jimmys from 1993-1997 with the same problem. However, they have not included the 1998 in the same recall. I checked the certificate on my door - my car was manufactured in 02/1998. This problem is creating a safety concern for my daughter and I while in the car. I live in florida where it rains daily during the summer. I called GMC on 5/12/03 to check into the recall on the 1993-1997 Jimmy's. I spoke to two customer service representatives. The second one, erin, noted my concern, but stated "your vehicle is not included in this recall" I replied "well, who do I call when this issue causes a car accident with me & my daughter?" her response was "call GMC customer service" - she was very rude and did not help solve the problem. This problem occurs almost every time it rains. It also occurs when I attempt to use the windshield washer fluid - the fluid will spray but the wipers will not come on.

34 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 08/15/2002

Consumer stated that windshield wipers worked intermittently. Dealer notified. The failure had been a problem for almost 2 years. Issues included loss of control speed, and inability to turn wipers off and on. Had to replace faulty circuit board, which was recalled on similar make, models and years through 1997.

35 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 GMC Jimmy

Failure Date: 08/14/2002

The windshield wipers, front and back, stop working with no warning. They can be on and stop working all together or not work at all. I have tried the different relay speeds and they still won't come on or continue working. It is a very seriuos driving hazard especially if it is raining heavy. You are required to pull over and wait until either the rain stops or the wipers start working again.
