While driving in the rain windshield wipers would work intermittently. Dealer notified.
The truck I have is 1997 GMC Jimmy 4x4 slt model I purchased the truck in 2000 knowing it was a pre owned vehicle for the first two years the vehicle was nice but the next two years I have have had nothing but troubles so far with this vehicle I have replaced 1) ignition switch that costed 700. Oo 2) pulley 3) alternator 4) heater core 5) compressor for a/c is gone havent replaced 6) fuel pump is gone havent replaced 7)winshield wipers work when they want to usual on clear days but when its storming they dont work which has resulted in me getting drenched 8) tailgate doenst want to go up I have had two years of problems with my truck and still contine to do so I purchased my truck with 21,252 mi and I now have 70,329 mi I need ball joints which I have not replaced in my opinion this is the worst vehicle I have ever ownmed and I believe ever made.
Upper & lower ball joint snapped while driving had to replace both along with idler arm pitman arm & tie rod ends , had received notice about possible failure on these when I called GMC they reported my car was not included in this possible recall. Cost of 1500. 00 also fuel pump failed cost of 700. 00 now driver side door is defected will not close , probems with electrical system locks ,windows, lights interior & exterior, wipers will only work occasionally, fuel gauge sticks.
Engine check light on intermittently. SUV accelelerate slowly, rpms reach 3000 before vehicles moves. Instrument panel lights going on and off, including the fuel gauge indicator. Over head dash light won't work. Took my SUV to the dealership on a Friday 11/09/01. All problems were occuring at that time and they could see for themselves. I was informed the the diagnosistic test showed 5 trans codes. And that wire to the transmission was loose and they reconnected that wire and all codes were now clear. The very next day my SUV began doing the same thing all over again. I called the dealership and reported the problem on Monday 11/12/01. I was then told that the problem may be caused be a wire leading from my ignition to transmission. And that I might need an ignition switch. And that to do the work it would cost me $400 to $500. And that they didn't think that the fuel gauge problem was related to this problems. There are time that I am unable to control my windshield wipers. I have read over 12 simular compliants & incidents. GMC need to repair these malfunction before someone is seriously injuried. I have almost been rear ender several times because my SUV won't accelerate properly. And to be driving along and suddenly have your instrument panel fails, this is distracting and unsafe. Also, my emergency brake will not hold. S. O.

Upper ball joint separated and the wheel was cut through causing the tire to go flat. The vehicle has been well maintained and the front end had been checked a few months earlier by a competent mechanic when new shocks were installed. Two weeks later a friend alerted me to "gm product safety campaign" # 01048. This was an alert to upper ball joints separating without warning on some '96-'97 Jimmys, bravadas and blazers. I inquired at my dealer to see if my vehicle qualified and was told "no, there are no open recalls on your VIN. ". I called the GMC customer assistance center at 1-800-GMC-8782 and spoke with "lisa" who assigned me reference number 056 42 894. Gm confirmed they "can do nothing for me, as there are no open recalls on your truck. " "it was built at a different plant and a different supplier provided the ball joints than the ones in the recall. " sounds like a load of crap to me. If I sound overly angered by a ball joint failure it might be because I have had nothing but grief with this vehicle and am tired of being a victim. The transmission was pulled under warranty at 28000 miles, yet I had to have it pulled again at my expense ($1474) at 52500miles. Two of the four O2 sensors have failed, the radiator was full of the infamous "missisippi mud" dex-cool sludge, the service engine light comes on at least once a month, the serpentine tensioner fell apart at 37k miles and had to be replaced again at 58k, the wipers frequently won't turn on unless you hit the mist lever as you hit a bump (common according to the edmunds. Com site), and last week my abs went out from what the trouble code diagnosed as a bad left front speed sensor. I'll have to drive it with the sensor unplugged for now because I've already put over $2000 in repairs into this thing during calendar year 2001 alone, and I'm tapped out. Same with the wiper condition.
Windshield wipers fail to actuate on an intermittent basis with no discernable pattern. Frequency of failure is increasing. When the wipers do fail sometimes they will activate after 15-20 attempts to turn them on. At times only stopping and turning off the ignition swithch and restarting the vehicle will get the wipers to activate. Transmission fbegan failing with occassional but noticable late and hard shifts from first to second gear . Engine light code scan indicated a failure of the valve body. Replacement of the valve body fixed the problem , but the addtional torque put on the drivetrain from the hard shifts most probably caused the failure of the rear u-joint as well.

Windshield wipers will quit working when its raining then quit again till finally they quit completely.
While driving to indianapolis on Jan. 30,2001 for business, my windshield wipers would quit working periodically. It was raining very hard and they once stopped while passing another vehicle causing a very dangerous situation. I proceeded to drive on to indianapolis, but staying in the right lane of interstate 74 all the way so as to be able to hit the shoulder if necessary. I had to have the wipers repaired before returning home, and just recently received information that there is a recall for windshield wiper motors on 1996 GMC Jimmy. Would like reimbursement for work done to replace motor so that I could travel home safely.
Consumer attempted to turn windshield wipers on, and they would not work. They have been doing this about dozen times.
I was on the highway going at the speed of 45mph when the ball joint on the front passanger tire broke, causing me to go through 3 lanes without warning and almost flipping my car over. This is not the first time where I have almost lost my life due to manufacturer defects. Last year while driving on the highway, the wipers went out on me in the middle of a thunderstorm. The wipers died out on me a total of 6 times in the last 2 years with over 10 visits to dealers for repairs. The ball joint cracking caused the cv boot to be damaged, the stabilizer lines were damaged, the line cover was damaged, and the dealer found that all 4 ball joints were severly bad - not because fo driving but manufacturer defect. The car is only four years old how could so many things be bad on a car that isn't even 4 years old. The warrantly CO. And manufacturer refuse to be responsible for damage caused to other components because of the broken ball joint. The engine cooler line is also bad, including the clamp which has been replaced already by outside source. The wipers have shut down more than once and it took over 10 visits to get them fixed - including paying out of pocket expense of $433. 00. The car has almost cost me my life more than 6 times on the highway at high speeds. Sorry to say - this car has been nothing but a death trap from day one.
Accident on abs failure about $2800. $850 out of my pocket for abs repair. Windshield wipers work sometimes and sometimes they dont. Mentioned windshield wiper not working to the tech at dealer. He said "we have quite a few wiper problems on that model, I expect a recall soon. " please let me know if there is anything I can do. Thank you.
Windshield wipers work intermittently. Windshield wipers go off and on.

Turned on wipers they did not come on tried all positions -wash, mist all delay positions, low, high. Only got load humming. Previous failure was on 7/19/99 when wipers suddenly stopped in upposition in rain.
While driving in heavy rain windshield wipers stopped in full up position. When I pulled off road I could here humming from under dash even when wipers in off position. Stopped when engine shut off. Restarted engine wipers still not operable still humming and smell like electrical. When washer lever pushed wipers went down. Turned back on worked normal for now dealer cant look at till next wk.

Windshield wipers become inoperable in rainy weather conditions, cause unknown. Consumer states wipers will be on and then stop, sometimes they will restart again, on one occasion, during a heavy rainfall, the wipers were on and then stopped with no warning, causing a dangerous situation due to very limited visibility, the dealer replaced the pulse wiper board.

Windshield wipers: when driving wipers will cut off, have to turn switch off and turn back on to get them to start. This is an intermittent problem. Causes very poor visibility, especially in hard rain. Took to dealer with no results. Module and pulse wiper control was replaced.
Rear washer leaking fluid when tailgate is down, new valve and loop installed in system. Mjs.
Consumer called complaining about having problems with windshield wipers stopping in the middle of real bad rain storms. Also, gas gauges are not working properly. Manufacturer was not contacted at the time of this call. * information** consumer called back in on 08/05/03 and advised that dealer serviced vehicle for recall remedy 01i018000/ball joints in 07/03. At that time, dealer was supposed to check wiper problem but did not. Consumer also added that vehicle was purchased in the united states.
When driving, windshield wipers are needed, and windshield wipers are smearing up the center portion of windshield, causing poor driver's visibility. Consumer has contatced dealer. Dealer has replaced blade and arms on five different occasions, problem still occurs. There is a gap in the rear tailgate window, however it can not be adjusted because the hinges are welded in place by a robot. Vehicle experiences poor gas mileage, however dealer stated this was normal.
