One problem related to tailgate hinge has been reported for the 1998 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The tailgate on our vehicle fell off, while driving, after the support cables had broken. Luckily this occurred on a lightly traveled road so that no vehicles behind the truck hit the tailgate. The tailgate is gone. All that remains are half of the broken support cables.
