18 problems related to instrument panel have been reported for the 2004 GMC Sierra. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
2004 GMC Sierra 2500hd, instrument panel started showing the rpm's to be in the red zone, then the speedometer would quite working, then the gas gage would quite working, then the temperature gauges quite working, to begin with it would happen periodically till it quite working completely. Took it to repair shop and had fixed. I know two other people that this has happened to also with the same vehicles only a year or two apart. All of which happened between 80,000 and 110,000 miles. Feel it is a safety concern, when I was doing 75mph on the highway and saw my rpm's pegged in the red and was in a hurry to pull off to the side of the road to prevent my engine from blowing up. Same with the temp gauges.
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal and noticed increased stopping distance. The brake pedal depressed very easily when the pressure was applied. The failure occurred whenever the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal so he replaced the brakes himself. The failure continued so he notified an authorized dealer and was informed his vehicle was not included in the recalls associated with NHTSA campaign id numbers 05v043000, service brakes, hydraulic or 04v045000, service brakes, hydraulic. The vehicle was not repaired. He also stated that his speedometer and oil gauge on the instrument panel displayed incorrect improper readings. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000 and the current mileage was approximately 48,000.
The speedometer on my 04 GMC Sierra sticks. Sometimes it reads 120 sitting still and mine is not the only one.
The speedometer began to display the wrong speed. (I. E. Sometimes 30mph at 50 or 60 or 120 at 45. The speedometer then stopped working completely. This all occurred over the period of 2 or 3 months.
Gm mailed a notice that the instrument panel in 2004 sieera trucks is subject to failure including fuel gauge, speedometer, etc. These can be very serious safety concerns depending on driving conditions. Gm has offer to extend the warranty to 70,000 miles or 7 years. This totally unacceptable from a safety standpoint.
Warranty extension on instrument cluster on 2005 Sierra 2500hd doesn't cover either truck I own because mileage is over the 70k limit. This problem has been around for years but service extension is no help now.
The speedometer on my 2004 GMC Sierra has been sporadically working. I have been researching it and have realized that it's not only my problem but a problem with GMC's and chevy's and I think that something needs to be done about it. I don't know what speed I'm going when I'm traveling down the road. It says 20 but I could be doing 80 for all I know. How many complaints does it take for you to make a recall?.
My 2004 GMC Sierra speedometer started acting up. Showing more than 20 mph over actual rate of speed and stuck at higher than zero when not driving. I feel it is ridiculous that I have to pay for replacement of this defective part when I have only 20,000 miles on my vehicle. Yes only 20k! I drive it infrequently but I am out of my 3yr warranty. This is a known problem that gm needs to address!.
04 GMC serria speeometer erratic and work.
Instrument cluster malfunctions. Speedometer flutters and displays wrong speed. Gets stuck.
Speedometer malfunctions. Goes to 120 then 0. Stays at 0. Stops working. Skips around.
My 2004 Sierra's speedometer doesnt register speed properly. Sometimes it sticks at one speed like 60 or 70 regardless of speed, or will rest at a number when the vehicle is motionless and proceed upward as the vehicle increases speed. This is very unsafe. Sometimes it works for a while if I can get it to fall back to zero, but that doesnt last long. It eventually quits functioning properly.
I have an 04 GMC Sierra with about 80,000 miles on it now, I bought the truck with 70,000 and at about 73,000 miles the speedometer started sticking. I would be doing 65 and then I would come to a stop the speedometer would not go back down. So I started my truck repeatedly until the needle went back down to 0. About a week later it did it again, and again the next week, and now this has been the 4th time it has happened and it will no longer work. I read in one forum that there was supposedly a recall about it but I looked online all over the place and found nothing. This should definitely be a recall because this seems like a very common problem that is not very cheap to fix (550. 00 plus 150. 00 for programming) at my local dealership. I am in college I cannot afford that!!!! * and I also got a speeding ticket so thank you gm!.
Speedometer failure. Speedometer would bounce around, then quit working, started working, failed to work, went over to 125+ mph when vehicle not moving. Speedometer has worked itself back around to 0 and no longer functions.
The speedometer of my 2004 GMC Sierra will often not show the correct speed. Sometimes it goes way up, sometimes way down - even to zero. I have contacted my local dealer who says it will cost at least $600 to repair and I have contacted GMC who says there is nothing they can do - they report no recall. My wife's 2004 chevy monte carlo had the same problems soon after we bought it new - it was repaired under warranty. From my research online, this speedometer problem seems to be very widespread with gm products. I believe a faulty speedometer is a very serious safety issue that should be addressed by gm.
The speedometer on my 2004 GMC pu failed on a recent trip from me to FL. As I pulled onto the MA trpk, I noticed that the speedometer was reading 85 mph. At the time, I was probably going 60 - 65. It then read higher and higher on the trip and the needle was buried at times. When I stopped, the needle would drop a little. A few days after the trip was concluded, the needle returned to zero when stopped and currently records accurately. Obviously, it is a safety hazard when your speedometer fails, especially in the middle of a long trip. I recently asked a local dealer if there has been a problem, and was told that they have had to replace "lots" of speedometers ($350). I then asked if the replacements failed and was told "not yet". Gm has not offered to fix this problem (I was just out of warranty) and should be forced to do so and recall all faulty units. There has been a lot of discussion on the internet. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Bought the truck from a dealership in August 2006. In November, the speedometer and tachometer stopped working. I bought an extended "bumper-to-bumper" warranty and they have told me that it is not covered. They want to charge me ninety dollars to inspect the failure, plus charge me for the repair. After some investigation, I find that this is a common problem with this year make and model.
My speedometer went from working normally to 0 mph being 75 mph now I am not sure how fast I am going. It just started this evening after I picked up my son. Before that everything was working fine. After researching to see if any others were having the same problem I found that many gm customers are experiencing the same problem with their speedometer. Some of them actually paying thousands of dollars while others are paying 4-7 hundred and still having the same problem hours later after paying to have it fixed. I would like to request a recall of the speedometer equipment on 2004 gm trucks and SUV's.
