Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor Problems of GMC Sierra

GMC Sierra owners have reported 18 problems related to air brake wheel speed sensor (under the air brake category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 07/08/2006

I was involved in a crash where I think the brakes on my 2001 GMC Sierra failed to stop my vehicle in time. I rear-ended a pickup truck, which hit a Toyota, which then hit a Jeep. I know there has been a recall on abs front wheel speed sensors, yet my VIN was not included in the recall. Nhtsa should force gm to recall all trucks, regardeless of location, and have the abs system properly fixed (not just clean the sensors!!).

2 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/20/2005

Abs brake system is causing truck to feel like it's not going to stop. I have it at the dealership now and they tell me both sensors have to be replaced. I only have approx. 22,000 miles on the truck. It's a 2000 Sierra.

3 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/13/2005

When you are going 3 to 6 miles per hour going slow or coming to a stop the abs system fails causing the brakes not to work, you have to push really hard on the pedal just to get it to slow down. I,ve talked to other people who have GMC and chevy pick-ups and they have had the same problem. This is something the should be repaired by gm before someone is killed. I also found out today that canada has issussed a recall for this problem. Does it take someone to get killed or injured be the NHTSA does something?.

4 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1998 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

When applying the brakes, the abs kicks on. This occurs when the vehicle is traveling less than 8 mph. No codes are set and the abs light is not illuminated. This matches your NHTSA action number pe05020. The dealership states it is the exact problem gm is monitoring with the 1999 - 2002. However, they are not including the 1998 models.

5 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

Antilock brakes engage at low speed, like when coming up to a stop sign, or when pulling up to a drive thru window.

6 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 04/30/2005

Abs activates just before comming to complete stop. (5-8mph) abruptly extending stopping distance. Problem showed up after truck was not driven for 4 days. Probably allowing corrosion to develope. Virginia did use large quantities of salt this year for ice and snow removal. Currently experiencing this problem. Not yet corrected. Will see if removal, cleaning and lubrication of wheel sensors will solve problem.

7 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 03/27/2005

Vehicle: 2000 GMC Sierra, ext. Cab, 4wd, less than 19000 miles. Vehicle exibited intermittant low-speed antilock brake activation. Although there were many "close calls" especially when the antilock motor would activate upon initial brake application (very low pressure in hydraulic lines), no damage was caused to the vehicle or other property. A potential dangerous situation exists with these heavy vehicles. Low output from right front abs sensor was diagnosed. I replaced entire hub and sensor assembly. The symptom is now gone. The old part is still in my posession for inspection.

8 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/20/2005

I have a 2000 GMC Sierra extended cab 4x4 z71. I believe I have the same problem with my abs sensor as has been reported by others. I have not had an accident but I have had many close calls. I pulled the fuse for my abs and now I do not have the problem, but am afraid my brakes will lock up in foul weather.

9 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 01/03/2005

Antilock brake problems on my 2000 GMC Sierra pickup. Hard to stop vehicle at at low speeds [under ten miles per hour. ].

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

Brakes fail below 5-8 mph.

11 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 12/15/2004

I own a 2001 GMC Sierra 4 wd pick-up with 45,000 miles that experienced anti-lock failure. The system would start pulsating at low speeds. I had many close calls(smashed in to my garage door once) before pulling the fuse as advised by the gm dealer. After further investigation I found that most everyone that I know with 99-2002 year gm vehicles had their fuses pulled as well. I called gm previously regarding other brake problems (anti-lock pump failure)(gm rotors that only last 6,000 mies) and the arrogant customer service personel try to convince you that they haven't had any complaints about their brake parts or systems and won't cover anything even though we know they are liars. I saw the NHTSA investigation notice and wanted to give my two cents. Thanks for making these crooks correct a dangerous situation.

12 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

Abs front speed sensor right hand(passenger) side failure. When applying brakes our 2001 GMC Sierra z71 at speeds below 5mph would act like the abs systems was kicking in for slippery road conditions. This would cause us not being able to stop when we would of liked to of stopped. This truck has only 35,000 miles of adult driven, easy, mostly non-town driving, so the brakes are not continually being applied. This is a very scary situation and we had to park this truck until we were able to get it into the shop and have it repaired. Cost of repair $391. 36.

13 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 10/20/2004

Anti-lock brakes chatter and fail to stop on my 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck at anything under 10mph. This started last October. The dealership quoted $480 to correct. Saved a bunch of money by unplugging the fuse for the abs sytem. Stops fine now. I almost hit the back of my garage wall and stopped cars in front.

14 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Failure of the abs system on my 2000 GMC Sierra pickup. Abs would acctivate at slow speeds and would make stopping truck very hard. Had to DE activate abs system so truch was useable. Dealer stated that problem was due to region of country that the truck was used in and was not their problem!.

15 Air Brake Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra

Failure Date: 02/04/2004

Anti-locking brakes - problem with abs brakes - as brakes applied on dry or wet surface, the worst brakes got, no matter if light or hard touch or slow or fast speed. GMC sierrra (2001) was brought in for repair after brakes failed causing slow speed collision with spouses pu truck in my driveway resulting in no damage or injuries. Replaced one speed sensor (left front wheel) and cleaned other at my expense ($148. 60 for parts, labor charge waived - mileage 35416). 2nd complaint or request - dragging brakes or locking and pulling when applied 3rd complaint or request - remove all four wheels and check brakes - results - repair include parts & labor at my expense - (mileage 41073) machine two front and two rear rotors and replace front and rear calipers plus free up slidders (parts $272, unknown breakdown on labor cost above and beyond).
