GMC Sierra owners have reported 7 problems related to door latch (under the latches/locks/linkage category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Stopping to run an errand on the way home from work I attempted to open the driver door of my 2000 GMC pickup. The door which has a power lock would not open. The electric door lock has apparently failed rendering the door inoperative. After a short panic attack, I had to exit my vehicle from the passenger door. The door could not be unlocked from the outside with a key or from inside the vehicle using the manual door lock slider bar. This is a severe safety hazard and should demand an immediate recall to ensure a failure of the power lock fails safe. As a safety engineer, I believe this could result in a fatality by someone not being able to exit the vehicle.

During a rain and then freeze in michigan, the driver side door latch fails to operate properly. By failing to operate, once open it will not latch until it thaws out. It has happened to me twice so far this 2004-2005 winter. GMC customer service has been contacted as well.
#1 04 Sierra 4x4 returned to dealer after 2 weeks (9/18/04) with 1523 miles for hard shifting. Clutch was not installed correctly from factory. Engage and disengage point in clutch pedal travel is at full depression into the firewall. #2 passenger door hard to close fully. Driver side door closes as expected with little effort. Passenger door will not close completely without undue force being applied or a window cracked. #3 returned truck to a different dealership on 9/15/05 with 8,190 and again 12/15/05 with 10,282 miles. For a knocking noise during turning, clutch not engaging and disengaging correctly, passenger door not closing completely, and a new rattling noise from the transmission along with a whine noise from the gears. The dealership fixed the knocking noise from a service bulletin concerning a steering bushing. This dealership also stated they found nothing wrong with the clutch or the transmission or the passenger door. None of the problems were fixed
#5 I immediately took the truck to an independent transmission specialist after picking it up from the dealership for a 3rd opinion on 12/20/05 with 10,284 miles. His opinion was flatly stated that the truck has major problems with the clutch and the transmission. His evaluation was the clutch was not installed correctly from the factory and depression into the firewall was not correct. The transmission has synchronizer and possible bushings and bearings that were failing. He stated the noises alone were definite indicators that the transmission has problems and that anyone would know that a clutch is not required to be depressed into the firewall for proper operation which in time will lead to premature clutch failure. This evaluation cost me $30 and 3 hour lost from work.

Passenger side door lock would not open with the remote or manual inside or outside door handles @37000 miles had to put key in door lock and hold key to extreme left and pull handle at same time to get passenger out. I think this is a safety issue. It is still broke.
GMC serria 2002. Our truck has rust on the bumper behind the painted cover. The dealer suggested this is normal and polished it, within one week the bumper showed rust again. The driver's side door is not lined up correctly, the dealer tried to adjust it, the result is the door must be slammed to close it. The motor makes knocking sounds at the start as if it has no oil. The oil has been changed every three thousand miles. The knock started after the truck turned four thousand miles. The dealer told us that gm reports the knock is normal. It is the first time iã‚ve heard of a gas motor having an intentional knock. We have had the truck this since it was new and have had the dealer do all the regular maintenance including tire rotations and oil changes.
