GMC Sierra owners have reported 10 problems related to tank assembly (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The lower half of the rear gas tank strap has rotted out and dislodged from the upper half of the strap. The front strap also has visible corrosion. A very serious situation. I was very fortunate to find the lower half of the strap, as I was moving firewood on my property. I feel blessed that I found the issue while the vehicle was not moving. I believe if undetected, the release of the gas from the chassis would have likely been catastrophic. I am very concerned for other vehicle owners!.

2008 GMC Sierra denali has intermittent fuel gauge operation. After filling up the vehicle while driving the fuel gauge needle will drop from full tank indication to empty tank indication even thought the tank is fuel of fuel. The dealer has removed the tank and replaced the fuel sending unit, but has not resulted in a fix just an educated guess. Also in the mornings the vehicle experiences a very loud knocking noise which when confronted at the dealer was told that this was a normal noise. Occurs everyday in the morning and when leaving work in the afternoon.

My gas guage on my 2000 GMC Sierra pickup is acting eratic. It goes back and forth between full and empty for no apparent reason. This started several months ago. I did a search on google and found that this same problem was being reported to automotive help sites by a whole lot of people. Some say it is the sending unit in the gas tank - some dealerships told them this. The cost to drop the tank and fix the problem is around $800. Even if you have not received enough complaints to force a recall on this issue, you can easily see by searching google that this is indeed a major problem. I suspect that not too many people know that they can fill a complaint with the NHTSA. Thank you. . .
Gas tank gauge works once in a while. Our mechanic said it was probably due to moisture. Also, the rear differential cover is either cracking or rusting through. I put a new gasket on it and the next day it was leaking again but not at the gasket. About 1/3 up from the bottom, you can see where fluid is leaking through the cover. I called 2 dealers (1 Chevrolet, 1 GMC). They both gave me numbers to other dealers (1 in PA. , 1 in IA. , 1 in upper mi. ). The two out of state dealers told me that the part was for a customer and would not sell it. The one in mi. Also said that, in addition to "that must be a popular part, because I've had every dealer in the country call me. " is this part a defective piece?.

I own a 2000 GMC Sierra. I have the same problem with the fuel gauge system as the 2000 Chevrolet siverado. The fuel gauge read erradically then low fuel light comes one even though tank full of fuel. There should be a recall on this defect. Was told the problem is with the fuel leveling sensor.
The fuel level gauge in my 2000 GMC Sierra has been erratic and is now consistently reporting the tank is empty every time I fill it up and it will then keep flipping between full and empty for about the first 100 miles after fill up. I cannot trust the gauge any longer to tell me when the tank is getting low either, as it will show 1/8 to 1/4 even when it will take 26 or so gallons of gas. This seems to be a faulty level sensor that is affected when the tank is full, mostly, and I am concerned that the electrical system connecting to the sensor in the tank may be shorting out in the tank near or in the presence of gasoline! I understand this is a common problem with these vehicles and suggest that it should be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer.
The gas tank collapsed which caused gas to leak.

Consumer noticed a gas leak. Had vehicle serviced and was informed that carbon monoxide constantly builds up and seals the gas tank, causing a leak at the seam of the tank. Ts .
I found 29 pages of the same problems on net lemon law. No safety defect mentioned in summary.
