I was driving about 45 miles an hour coming down an overpass. The brake pedal went completely to the floor and I narrowly avoided a crash. I took to my mechanic. They said that the brake lines were completely rusted out. I am not getting this fixed as it is an older truck but I do think that someone could die from this defect.

6 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2016

Thankfully I was in a parking lot, I was backing up and my brake pedal went right to the floor and I had no brakes at all. The brake line on the driver's side front burst. I have my truck at a local shop and its going to cost around $1500 to replace the brake lines. The cost is mostly labor. If loose the front brakes, I would expect the rear brakes to work but that is not the case. I am thankful I was not on the highway or pulling a trailer. I could of got hurt or hurt someone else. Gm needs to look into the quality of parts used in their vehicle especially something as important as brakes.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2015

Driving to work one morning, I noticed as I approached a stop sign that I had to push my brake pedal further than I had earlier in my trip. Instead of continuing onto the freeway I pulled into a station and tested the brakes only to find that I could push them all the way to the floor and come to a gradual, rolling stop. The truck was towed to a shop where it was found that one of the metal brake lines had rusted through. All 6 lines showed signs of severe rusting. Once the lines were replaced the mechanic told me that a second line had rusted to the point that he did not think it would have held pressure if I had only replaced the first failed line. I was advised that the brake lines in this model and year of truck were known to rust and fail early in the life of the vehicle, especially in northern states.

11 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2015

The brake lines are rusted so badly it will not pass it's next va state inspection. This truck has only been driven 74000 miles. Can this be normal? I am a disabled vet with limited income and can not afford the cost of replacement. There is also more than normal rust of the suspension and other parts under the body. I believe this has gone on too long and a recall is necessary.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2015

My 15 year old son driving with me in the passenger seat he has a learners permit applys the brake and it went to the floor not being able to stop properly swerves and avoids a collision with limeted brakes I took over and made it home buy the time I got home I had no brakes and no brake fluid I was releived to make it. I work on cars for a living and never replaced brakelines do to rusting out. There will be a fatality if gm dont fix there problem. I dont live in where it snows very often my couny has 2 salt trucks and my roads I drive dont get salt ,we havent got snow besides a dusting in three years. So to say its trucks in the north is a false statement. I bought a ss aftermarket brake line set I will install it myself . I know it will be labour extensive but it has to be done thanks for letting me vent thanks to you you for reading my complaint.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

I was moving my 1500hd GMC sierra which has 29k mile & the front brake line under the radiator, blew out due to rust this is a nightmare for any GMC owner , upon an inspection of all brake lines I find they are just steel with no anti corrosion on any of them. I also own a 2002 yukon & now it has the same problem, all lines are badly rusted & just recently the lines on the rear axle burst. This is life threatening situation the very this you rely on the most is brakes.

16 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2014

This is the second time a break line has burst on this truck. This is dangerous. I had the truck taken to local shop and was told all break lines are in danger of rupture. How can GMC put this junk steel in their brake lines? when people start getting killed if they havent already maybe something will be done. I smell some lawyer getting rich here.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2014

I approached a busy intersection and because traffic signal was turning amber, I applied my brakes and there were no brakes. The brake lines had corroded and broke. Although I filed a complaint last year, gm has decided that even though there are numerous incidents regarding the cheap parts they used in these vehicles, they would not issue a recall. In fact, there was a newspaper article 2 weeks ago that stated there would be no recall because most of these accidents were in northern states where salt is used on the roads in winter. However, now they have issued a very limited recall for Cadillac ctss for the exact years that our GMC suffered same kind of brake failure. The cost to replace these faulty parts is estimated at $2000 per vehicle. But the danger to life and property is much greater. Don't understand how there can be such a limited recall when more than this one model is affected. And yes, I mitigated my damages by having brakes repaired. But feel that I was cheated, now that restricted recall has been issued.

18 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2014

Was approaching an intersection and light turned yellow, applied brake and peddle went right to the floor, coasted through red light and immediately parked vehicle. Towed to local garage and front brake line in the middle (under rock guard) severely rusted and failed.

Brake line failure due to rust through. Truck pedal went to floor in heavy expressway traffic almost causing accident.

23 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2013

The brake line going to the rear passenger side tire ruptured. The breaks remained barely operable. Was able to drive to dealership by constantly adding brake fluid to tank. All the brake lines needed to be replaced at a cost of about $2000. It was just luck this happened on an empty road and while not carrying a load of material.

24 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2012

While driving at app 50mph I tried to brake to avoid a vehicle which pulled out in front of me and my pedal went all the way to the floor. To my horror I had no brakes!!!!!! luckly my 2002 GMC is a 5 speed manual transmission and I was able to down shift to avoid an accident. Using my transmission and finally my emergency brake (which rusted through the year before and cost over $300. To repair)) I was able to pull to the side of the road and safely stop. My auto was towed to a local repair shop where the mechanic showed me the rusted through brake lines. It cost me over $2,000 for repairs.

25 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Pulled into a parking space at a store brake pedal went right to the floor, hit building. Brake lines blew out related to poor quality brake lines from manufacturer.

26 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

While driving home, someone pulled out in front of me. I applied the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. I managed to avoid a collision and made it home as this happened luckily around the corner from my house. I looked for the problem, it didn't take long as under the hood the frame was covered with brake fluid. I was amazed to find that one of the metal brake line had rusted through and the others don't look to be in very good condition. Needless to say I will be replacing all the brake lines with stainless steel lines (a cost of $350. 00). I can't imagine why stainless steel lines are not original equipment. Rust seems to be a problem with this vehicle not only the brake lines but also parts of the suspension.

27 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Rear brake line developed leak making vehicle hard to control, very close to having accident. I guest gm would rather pay out for a few accident deaths than repair this defect. It seems its all about the dollar than safety.

28 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2012

Today is 9/24/12. First let me start by saying I have owned my truck since 2004, and take pride in taking care of my vehicles. My vehicles are always dealer maintained at a gm dealer. I have had no troubles with my truck until now, and this brake failure could have killed me and my family. My truck was inspected April 13th 2012 last and had no visible signs of unsafe brake lines. I had only put 326 miles on my truck since said last inspection. I was on my way home when I had to stop at a red light. I was traveling approximately 50 mph when I went to apply the brakes. My brake petal went to the floor. Luckily there were no cars in front of me as I held the horn and drove through a red light. I was also lucky that others drivers in the intersection had not started driving. My emergency brake then failed from the high speed I was traveling, but did help minimally in the slowing of my truck. I was able to stop by downshifting and driving up an embankment on the side of the road. As my truck traveled uphill and came to a slower speed, I was able to then put the vehicle in park which then got me to a complete stop. I decided to file this complaint after learning that many other people with the exact same truck as me have had this exact issue. I think it is absolutely unacceptable that a vehicle that is only 10 years old has break line failure. It is unheard of and must be directly caused from gm using inferior metal for these vehicles brake lines, therefore making them responsible to fix this problem and stand by the vehicles they have made! not only could I have died from gms faulty manufacturing, but I could have injured others. Gm needs to stand up and deal with these problems and help owners with these extremely expensive repairs. I was quoted over 2000 dollars from my dealership to fix my brake line failure. We need help gm!.

29 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Was in my driveway about to make a 2 hour drive on the high way. I stepped on the brake to put my truck in reverse and the pedal went to the floor. I inspected the brake lines to see fluid under my truck between the cab and bed. I asked someone to step on the brakes while I saw the brake line shoot fluid very hard. The brake line had burst and was shooting out fluid. I'm lucky this wasn't on the highway as I wouldn't have been able to stop at all.

30 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

My husband was heading out to drop off my kids to the babysitter. He was traveling highway speeds of 55/60 mph when he needed to hit brakes for slower traffic. He did so and there were no brakes. He was able to use the shoulder of the road and the emergency brake to slow down and stop safely. We had the truck towed back home and apparently the front brake lines are rusted through and need to be replaced. We've already replaced brake lines to the back, now we'll be replacing all the brake lines.

31 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2012

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the pedal was abnormally depressed into the floorboard. The contact stopped the vehicle and after inspecting, he noticed that all the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

32 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2012

I lost brakes on a return trip from shopping trip at a near by town . I was able to stop by using the emergency brake in time to prevent hitting the vehicle stopped ahead of me at a red light. I was able to get my vehicle home by driving at very low speed and using the emergency brake with without any further incident . I attempted to repair the corroded section of the line . While bleeding the brake lines another section rupture . Upon further inspection I discovered all the lines were corroding and needed to be replaced . Also all the couplings on the fuel lines are corroded . My truck has been sitting in my drive way for lack of the funds to get it repaired . The estimate for the brake lines to be repaired is about $1200. 00. I haven't got a clear estimate for the fuel line couplings because the might also have to be replaced if they can't be repaired . The fuel lines other wise are not corroded.

33 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2012

Was driving donw sreet in came to stop sign brakes failed, almost was hit by 2 cars, had truck towed to garage, mechanic said he is replacing more brake lines on gm products than ever before, same thing happened to my 93 eldorado. Gm is using very cheap brake lines that corrode very quickly, they are not protected be any anti-corrosive material or spray. Truck is at an auto serv waiting for repair, was told will be between 6-7 hundred to fix! gm should pay for this! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

34 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

The contact owns a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500. While attempting to reverse from a residential driveway while towing a trailer, the contact applied pressure to the brakes however, the pedal went to the floorboard abnormally and did not stop the vehicle. The dealer had not been notified. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with rusted and corroded brake lines. The brake lines were replaced by the mechanic. The current mileage is 140,272 and the approximate failure mileage was 140,100. Updated 11/03/11.

35 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2011

Total brake failure due to brake line rust through. No partial system brake was available, the pedal went right to the floor with the only indication being a couple of soft pedal pumps with minimal braking before total failure. Vehicle was traveling in city traffic. There had been no panic stops up to this point. No accident occured. I had to use emergency brake to stop vehicle. Vehicle is now parked, waiting for repair. Total brake line replacement needed due to massive rusting.
