1 Seat Belt problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/03/2026

I was driving down the highway at 70 mph, when there was a loud bang followed by a gun powder smell. My seatbelts went tight. . . Hazard lights automatically came on. . . Radio went dead. . . And the airbag light came on. The pretensioners in both driver and passenger seats had deployed. I pulled over and shut the truck off, to get out and inspect it. There was no warning, and luckily I was composed enough to not wreck into anyone or anything. I see there have been a few similar incidents, so I'm glad this isn't just a solitary incident.

5 Seat Belt problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/07/2025

Our middle seat belt has stopped working in the back seat- we have not had it replaced yet. No damage was done on it by us, but will not click into the buckle. Driving on the hi-way engine started making awful noises. We pulled over and had the truck towed to royal moore GMC in hillsboro oregon as we didn't want to cause any more harm to the engine. Royal moore GMC informed us the engine rod bearing failed on [xxx], leading to breaching of the engine block by the rod. This caused us to replace the entire engine at the cost of over 13,000$ and no vehicle for over 3 months. (along with engine replaced they told us we had to replace the O2 sensor as the light came on after the engine was replaced). We had to take a hardship loan to get the engine replaced, and had the truck back for 1 day before we had a O2 error l light came back on. At this time (may 5th) we are still waiting for our truck back. Royal moore doesn't know why the engine light is on- and contacted tac for GMC. We also contacted GMC multiple times when we were waiting for the engine. They have offered no help to us besides empty promises to call us back later. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

7 Seat Belt problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 12/30/2024

I was driving in a parking structure at low speed when a loud bang went off inside the cab. The hazard lights went off, there was an acrid electrical smell, and fine dust was coming from the steering wheel area. I stopped the truck and got out to look for a collision, but there was none. When I restarted the truck, the air bag light came on and I noticed that the seatbelts were retracted and no longer functional. I was not injured, but I believe that if this had happened in traffic or on the highway, I and my passenger could have been seriously hurt. The vehicle was towed to the GMC dealership, where they identified an error with the module that sends a signal to the airbags and seatbelts to deploy. Prior to this occurrence, I had no indication that the airbag/seatbelt system was faulty or in need of service.

The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

12 Seat Belt problem of the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 02/09/2024

My son's 2015 GMC sierra side impact air bags went off while he was driving. He had no impact. He thought he hit a small pot hole but after driving back on the road, it was recently paved so it was not a pot hole. He guessed it was the edge of the road from the recent paving that he hit. He heard a loud noise like a gun shot. His cabin filled up with smoke and the side impact air bags when off. When he took the truck to the gm dealership, it gave a code for front air bag deployment due to impact. But the side air bags went off and there was no impact. The only damage to the truck is the deployed side airbags and the locked seatbelts. He has a warranty but they kicked it to gm. Warranty stated that if they fixed it, they were worried that it would happen again. We filed a claim with gm. After gm sent three different inspectors out and over 5 weeks later, they denied the claim. They have also not sent the inspection reports as requested. My son did not have this truck for the first three months he owned it because gm could not find the faulty code causing transmission issues. I am worried the air bags deployment will happen again while he is driving at a high speed and cause a serious wreck.

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was no audible chime or alert heard. After driving and then restarting the vehicle there was still no audible sound from the electrical system. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed the contact that the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact replaced the battery, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 14v301000 (electrical system, seat belts) however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

14 Seat Belt problem of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/12/2024

On my 2014 GMC, the front driver side seatbelt was not latching. We had to finagle to latch it. To which this point we were unsure that we were safe. So I brought the GMC to the GMC rosedale dealership and after further investigation they charge me $522 to repair replace the belt. I told them it’s a safety issue, but they seem not to care, I also contacted GMC corporate and they are investigating this. So if it state law that you have to wear a seatbelt for your safety, why do dealerships charge you to repair or replace them. ?.

The middle rear seatbelt fails to lock when retracted, therefore I cannot use my grandchild's booster seat. The dealership has ordered a replacement, but cost nearly $300. I bought the vehicle new in December 2018, but have never had to use the real seatbelt until now. Therefore I did not know it did not work properly until now.

18 Seat Belt problem of the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/18/2023

I get a "service safety restraint system" warning sporadically when driving. No known cause and the vehicle has never been in an accident. This started happening after my last service at capital Buick GMC in smyrna, GA on January 6th, 2023.

19 Seat Belt problem of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/13/2023

The infotainment system loses all audio through the speakers intermittently. When this happens I also lose the safety warning chimes as well. Shutting off the vehicle for an extended period of time resets something and it resumes normal function. I have contacted gm customer service and spoke to 3 different representatives and requested an escalation to a senior advisor, which I was told could take up to 4 days to hear back. The vehicle has 800 miles and is 1 month old, this has occurred 4 times. It has not been looked at by the manufacturer as I am waiting for return communication. Other than no sound, everything else on the touch screen seemed to be working normal, but im no technician to determine that. I feel this is a safety concern as I travel with my 13 month old daily.

23 Seat Belt problem of the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

My truck lost all audio including radio, turn signals and seat belt warning chimes. I feel this is a major safety concern not having a seat belt warning as well as an open door alert. The dealership notified me there is not a recall on the 2015 model and I would be charged for any and all labor.

24 Seat Belt problem of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/18/2022

My drivers side seat belt cable broke. I did some research and there was a recall no. 16v209000. I took my vehicle to swickard GMC dealer in anchorage ak to get repaired and they fixed the seatbelt but told me it wasnt covered under the recall because the recall had already been completed in 2015. The issue with the seat belt breaking is exactly the issues in the recall and believe the recall was not completed or was completed unproperly.

25 Seat Belt problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/10/2022

I started my 2008 GMC sierra, crew cab and began to pull my drivers side seat belt across my body to latch it. I was about 1/2 way when I heard a loud bang that sounded like a gun going off to my right, the seat belt that I had in my hand pulled back tight pulling my hand with it. There was smoke and the smell of gun powder coming from the bottom of the passenger seat by the seat belt. With my heart pounding in my chest I got out of my truck as quickly as I could (my driver's side door was still open). Both the driver's side and passenger side seat belts were pulled tight and I was unable to get either to release. The truck is now sitting, unable to be driven safely with the seat belt on. The dealership said it would be just under $1,000 to fix plus towing and has no idea how or why it happened. This truck has never been in an accident and currently has about 140,000 mostly highway miles on it and I am the original owner. Searching online I found that there are other people on blogs who have had similar problems with exploding seat belt modules with a range of 40,000 miles to over 150,000 miles.

29 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 08/22/2021

System that failed was the air bag system , yes it can be available for inspection with notification, my family and friend were put at risk when the air bag system deployed in a parked car and seat belt restraints were deployed pulling them back into the seats , not moving and no other cars around it or near it went off randomly it was not in an accident , injuring the 3 occupants. The problem is still pending , at the dealer, and general motors has been notified . Case 9-6893265248, general motors product assistance claims (pac) there has been a police report filled with local officials, I don't think the dealership has inspected , buy recommendation of gm, since this is none accident related to the air bag system going off randomly, very freighting to me and my family. No warning lamps no indication of anything wrong with the vehicle, prior to incident, and one of the boys could not exit the car due to the seat belts being cinched down on him during the air bag explosion. Incident happened 8/22/2021 at about 10:15 to 10:30 am a week latter we are still waiting on answers from general motors as to what happened , this vehicle has never been in an accident , and we have all the service records from the dealership , the only place it has been serviced, gm has download data from the computers, and we have asked for copies of those data files as well, we do have all the service records as well should you need them.

30 Seat Belt problem of the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 06/12/2021

Airbag light and "service safety restraint system" keep flashing on and off intermittently. Sometimes every 5 seconds. Sometimes once or twice a day. This is a known issue with 2021 gm trucks and suvs. Trying to get vehicle in for service but dealer said they are booked 2 weeks out and won't given loaner vehicles at all anymore. The vehicle has less than 2000 miles on it.

31 Seat Belt problem of the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 05/03/2021

I receive at random times the warning in the dic (driver information center) on the dash of my car together with an air bag warning light. I have had this happen sometimes frequently and sometimes not for a thousand miles. I have taken it in at least 8 times, some parts were replaced in seat belt, but it continues to show up. The problem is it now doesn't leave a code but my local dealer said if it ever came up when I could get it to them to bring it in and leave it running. That happened and I brought it in the ran a computer check and got a code. I had to leave for florida 2 days later, so they said bring it in to a dealer in florida, give them the code, which I did, they checked it but said they will not replace parts without an active computer code. Problem started around 11k miles; I have 32k miles, and dealer wont replace parts unless they know they are bad.

34 Seat Belt problem of the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 07/09/2020

I was slowly going across a parking lot when a loud bang like a gun shot happened and the driver side seat belt pulled me tight against the seat. There was a smell of a chemical gas in the cab and the emergency flashers came on. I am surely glad I was only going a few miles an hour. Now the seat belts (both sides) are locked tight. I understand this might not be that rare of a problem but it's the first I've ever heard of it.
