2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 06/06/2011

After filling the tank I drove for several hundred miles and I looked at the tank and it showed I had gas so I kept driving, soon the engine stopped and I was left stranded by my truck and I am disabled. I then had the vehicle towed and the service station found nothing wrong with it other than they added gas and it started and ran fine. I continued to drive the truck and noticed that the gas was not going down on the gauge like it should. One day I got in my truck and started it and the low fuel sensor light came on along with a chime , the (dic) said the fuel was low but I had just filled it up and had only driven a few miles. The low gas light stays on all the time now even when I fill it up along with the service engine light and it will chime every time I start it up. I took the vehicle to a mechanic and he stated it was a worn fuel level sensor and he has had several gm vehicle that have had the same problem. I feel like this is a safety problem especially when you are disabled and have problems getting around in the first place.

3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

I have a 2001 Chevrolet truck with a 4. 3 liter v6 engine and a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 hd with a 6. 0 liter v8 engine and both of them have fuel guage problems. The fuel gauge is very eratic and hardly ever accurate. I was going about 70 mph and showed 1/2 tank of gas and all of a sudden ran out of gas in the 2002 model. The 2001 model is never accurate. I have to carry spare gas with me everywhere. On the internet, there are thousand and thousands of other people complaining about the same problems in numerous chat logs. Gm should recall these vehicles and do something about this major defect.

6 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 10/31/2006

: the contact stated while driving 40 mph on the highway, a passing motorist motioned to pull the vehicle over. The contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and white smoke erupted from between the bed and cab of the truck as well as underneath. The fire department was alerted, and extinguished the flames. Also, the police were alerted, and a report was taken. The vehicle was deemed a total loss due to the extensive fire damage. The fire department inspected the vehicle and determined there was a small hole in the fuel tank which resulted in gasoline leaking onto a nearby wiring harness and ultimately causing an ignition source which led to a fire. The manufacturer was not alerted.

7 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 09/21/2006

Gasoline sensor or computer indicator shows low fuel and gas gauge shows no fuel when engine cold and weather is cool or cold outside, regardless of the quantity of gas in the trucks tank (full, 1/2, 3/4, etc). This just recently happened and also four to six times last winter.

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 04/09/2006

Gas fuel gauge-: gauge registers empty when tank is full. Refuel light comes on & stays on. Gauge bounces back & forth & is hard to tell how much fuel is actually in the tank. Have to watch odometer to figure out when to fill tank up with gas. On -going problem!!!!!.

9 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 03/16/2006

Gas gauge goes to empty without warning, even after filling up the tank. "low fuel" warning stays on when on empty, even when there's plenty of gas in the tank. This should not be happening, GMC should take care of there customers. This is my second GMC truck, and I bought this one because of the quality my 1st truck was good. My wife wants me to buy a Toyota next time, that's all she ever owned. GMC take care of this problem, or I'll won't be coming back for a 3rd.

10 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 11/30/2005

My gas gauge on my 2000 GMC sierra pickup is acting erratic. It goes back and forth between full and empty for no apparent reason. This started about a year ago. The dealer said it was probably the sending unit in the tank and would cost approx $800 thank you. . .

11 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

First thing was that my gas gauge started to fluctuate. Up until the point that I didn't know how much fuel I had in my tank. Then my instrument cluster started to go. It started to fluctuate then dies from time to time. Rpm's , speed, gas, oil press, park, neutral, reverse, drive, 1,2,3, and miles driven cannot see anymore. Everything died the first time when I was driving home from work in the middle of the night on a dark road. Called dealer and dealer said it will cost me almost $600, which is ridiculous considering the fact that I just paid off the vehicle. I know that this is a repetitive problem with gm vehicles and am still wondering why gm won,t recognize it except only for '03 and '04 model trucks with under 70,000 miles. I bet you if people knew that one day their cluster would die under 7 years they would rather place their investment in a vehicle elsewhere. If I was stationed stateside when this problem started 2 1/2 years ago; I would have had the dealer take care of it. //signed// concerned owner.

12 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

The gas gauge is not dependable. Sometimes accurate, but more often, not accurate. It is a continuous problem. You may run out of gas at any moment, in traffic, on the interstate at high speeds, then you have no steering or brakes, engine is dead. It has happened many times, once when it showed 3/4 tank full. I have a 2001 chevy regular cab pickup truck that does the same thing. I have talked to many other owners that have the same problem. It is definitely a factory defect.

13 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 GMC Sierra 1500

Failure Date: 01/15/2002

The first time I bought the vehicle it overflowed fuel when I filled the fuel tank to it's capacity. I assumed a vent line was loose, but knew it would be a big job to drop the fuel tank and check, so I just limited the amount of fuel I would fill the tank with. On Jan 5, 2007, the fuel pump quit working and after dropping the tank no vent line was found to be loose. Upon further investigation, I determined the fuel pump mounting flange on the tank was about half connected, thus where the fuel would leak from when the tank was filled to capacity. It appeared the mounting flange is fused on and there was not an adequate bon made. It was on about 1/32" wide for 180 degrees and only about 1/16" wide the other 180 degrees. I have since repaired the tank using a product called jb weld and also installing (4) #10 machines screws with washers and locking nuts holding the flange to the tank.
