The contact owns a 1999 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, he heard an abnormal noise in the drive shaft. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the fuel tank straps were fractured. Both straps were replaced. The dealer and manufacturer were notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 101,000.

Check engine light investigated, and cause found to be loss of fuel tank pressure due to rotted out fuel filler neck. Original part made of non-corrosion resistant steel. Other corrosion problems with this vehicle have involved brake lines. The first line was replaced in 2007, when the vehicle was only 4 years old. A more extensive replacement of corroded lines was done in 2008 or 2009. These are serious safety and emissions related problems, and these vehicles should be recalled as a result of them. Owners who have paid for repairs in the past should be compensated by a reasonable amount.

The fuel gauge began jumping from full to empty regarless of the actual amount of fuel in the tank. I took gm's recommendation to put their fuel system cleaner into the gas tank to clean the contacts on the fuel sending unit. Approximately 6 months later, the catalytic converter plugged to the point that the vehicle would not run and it had to be replaced. Now told that only way to fix the fuel gauge is to pull the gas tank and replace the sending unit. Should be a recall for this faulty sending unit and the "quick fix" that many people probably try. Approximately $400 to fix sending unit because it's built into the gas tank, and approximately $1000 to replace the catalytic converter.
