1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2021

This vehicle has been in and out of the shop several times for the same reason, "reduced engine power". It puts me in a dangerous position sometimes because the vehicle will suddenly go into this "limp mode" I have spent several thousand dollars in repairs and fixes by qualified mechanics and yet this problem will not go away. After much research I find that I among many people with the same problem. It happened three times yesterday!.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2015

While driving I noticed that the speedometer needle was erratic going from zero to 120 mph. When I stopped the needle was stuck at 30 mph. At the same time the gear shift indicator light went from dull to non existent preventing me from knowing what gear I was in. This was happening sporadically but now the speedometer needle is always on zero and the gear shift indicator is never lit. I saw online that there has been a recall for the instrument panel for the same speedometer problem I am having but the recall ended with 2004 vehicles even though there is a lot of complaints online with the 2005 models also. I saw a recall (#05023) for the gear shift indicator light. I tried calling GMC to have it fixed and was told it is VIN specific. I explained that the recall did not specify specific VIN numbers. Was rudely told I am out of luck. I tried to address both issues with GMC to no avail. They don't want to know when there is a problem. Maybe they will listen when someone is killed. I just hope it is not me!.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2015

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Yukon. While driving at approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from the air conditioner vents. In addition, the cable under the dashboard on the passenger side caught fire. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2015

While driving on an interstate highway at 70 mph I experience a total tire failure whereas the middle 4 inches of the tread/belt area of my bf goodrich lt245/75 r 16 lre m+s commercial t/a all season bf11 jd11 4011 tire completely separated from the tire's core, resulting in the remainder of the tire's tread/belt to continue stripping away causing significant wheel well, rear quarter panel, gas tub, and electrical harness damage to my 2005 Yukon xl 2500. Tires had just passed a nc safety inspection, were properly inflated with 38,000 miles on them.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

I have noticed over the past year that the shift indicator in the instrument cluster has been intermittent/not visible during any operation of car operation. This has been a complaint to the local dealer do to a safety issue in which you do not see what position the shift indicator is in.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2014

I was driving on the 55 freeway, and all of a sudden my electrical gps, radio, and power turned off for approx. 5 sec. And the dash rebooted, and radio remained off, and the car was still crusing, but losing speed. I put the car in neutral and had to restart while cruising. It is not the first time this has happened. Spoke to GMC parts dept. On the phone, and he stated there is no recall for this vehicle. This has happened approx. 5 times. I shared that information to the parts dept. And he stated that they could do a diagnostic that would cost a pretty hi amount to check, and if nothing come out of it I asked. Then he stated nothing.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

Yesterday I started my vehicle and turned on the a/c. The a/c blower was blowing at the highest setting regardless of the control setting. I turned the a/c off and the blower remained on. I turned the ignition off and the blower continued to run. The blower continued to run for approximately 8 minutes while my husband researched online how to get it to stop. The blower did not stop running until my husband removed the fuse. If my husband would not have been with me the blower would have continuously ran, causing it to overheat, and possibly causing a fire. Also, we have digital gear lights on our dash. Those lights started periodically dimming several years ago and have since gone out completely, other than the seldom random occasion, so we can no longer read what gear the vehicle is in. We took the vehicle to the dealership where it was purchased and asked what the cause was and how to repair it. We were told the complete instrument control panel cluster would need to be replaced at the cost of $350 for the panel alone. After doing some research of my own, I have come to find out this seems to be a very common problem. Not knowing what gear you are in is definitely a safety issue that needs to be handled by gm.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

My 2005 GMC Yukon denali rear tailgate / hatch is locked and the electronic lock motivator will not open the rear tailgate / hatch. There is no key nor manual way to open rear tailgate / hatch. The dealer said that they were not sure what it would cost to fix although it would be no more than $450. 00. Since this vehicle has three rows of seats there is no manual way to open this rear tailgate / hatch for the passengers in the third row of seats to get out in case of an emergency. The manufacturer should have included an alternate way to open this hatch for emergency's. Whether it would be a key from the outside or a door handle on the inside. We feel that type of vehicle should be reviewed and it should include various years of this GMC vehicle, the Chevrolet tahoe, and the Chevrolet suburban which have the same setup for this safety reason. Thank you for your assistance and review of this safety issue.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

2005 GMC Yukon. Consumer writes in regards to various electronic problems including service air bag indicator. The consumer stated he experienced chronic problems with speedometer, starting problems, wheel hub and traction control sensor. Also, the transfer case was replaced.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2014

This is the 2nd occurrence of the same incident in 3 months. While moving slowly through a parking lot, the engine just stops. No shudder, no rough idle, no warning. Without power, steering is impaired or impossible. Turning the ignition key restarts the engine normally. Jiggling the key cannot replicate the problem.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2013

Speedometer moves to 0 after 40 minutes of driving, even at freeway speed. Once speedometer needle reaches 0, it stays there, even while vehicle is moving at 60-70 mph. Turning engine off then back on again does not reset it. After letting vehicle sit overnight, it becomes operational again, then will go back to 0 after 30-35 minutes of driving. Denali has very few miles on it for its age.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

Passenger headlight (low beam) has been replaced twice. Intermittently goes on and off. Same with 2 out of 3 brake lights. Doesn't matter how many times we replace the bulbs, we keep having the same problem. Is GMC going to pay my ticket when I get pulled over?.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2012

This basic incident has occurred approximately ten times. The 4wd control module malfunctions at random. The vehicle message center will display "service 4wd," and a clicking sound can be heard as the lights on the transfer case control panel switch on and off, switching the vehicle in and out of gear. Several times this has happened in such a way that the truck shifted into 4lo at moderate speed. Once, the vehicle stalled in an intersection with the abrupt shift. I am convinced that this is a systematic issue with gm 4wd trucks, but it is in no way being addressed. It is an extreme safety hazard when a 5400 lb. Vehicle suddenly shifts into low range or neutral without advance warning. A simple internet search shows that this has happened to many other gm vehicle owners. The only remedy seems to be removing the relay to cut power to the module, thus rendering this "mighty" 4x4 a 2wd sled. This is a safety hazard of the highest order! I cannot say enough negative things about the electrical system of this vehicle in particular and the build quality in general. It destroys tires, it is a pleasant surprise when something works as it should, and I had to replace the "heavy duty" transmission at 120k when the power bands catastrophically failed. For shame, general motors! I will never again purchase another of your shoddy vehicles.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2012

The speedometer is erratic and is now pinned all the way to the right (over max). The speedometer shows +/- 120mph, even in park. I have no way to determine my speed.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

Incident date: front cabin / in dash fire 11/25/2011 at 5:20pm vehicle: 2005 GMC Yukon xl slt with approximately 120k miles vehicle was parked in driveway; had just been driven however the engine was off; 15-30 minutes later heard loud bang and glass breaking; front cabin of the vehicle was engulfed in flames; opened doors and sprayed water on until fire department got there. Insurance company has requested that the vehicle remain at place of incident until adjuster can investigate. Fire department best assumption at this point is that this was an electrical fire that started somewhere in the dash between the front center console and the steering column. We are the original owner; bought the vehicle new; no aftermarket options; other than tires and brakes, all original mftr equipment, all warranty work done at GMC dealership. We have extensive documentation with GMC for all warranty issues since it was purchased many of which have been electrical problems. Examples are steering column electronics, passenger a/c blowing hot air due to electrical, radio / cd player over heating replaced 2 times, dvd player replaced numerous times, sporadic incidents where dvd and dash components would just stop working requiring the vehicle to be turned completely off then back on for it to work; fuel gauge showing empty when the tank was full - car had to be turned off, key out, restart to correct; electronic fuel pump issues - replaced; load leveling electrical component replaced; electronic shifting components on transmission; electronic window switch, etc. . .

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

My speedometer quit working and I checked and it is a factory defect.

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Yukon denali xl. The contact stated that the speedometer was inoperable and she was unable to determine how fast or slow she was traveling. The manufacturer was aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle had accrued more than 85,000 miles. The dealer was contacted and confirmed what the manufacturer advised the contact. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 89,700 and the failure mileage was 85,600.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

Interior vehicle fire in dash. 1st smoke then center of dash erupted into flames. Vehicle is now totalled. GMC is aware of this condition and issued no recalls. Appears service bulletins were issued about replacing over heating resistors for the (havc) operating system. The fan would either stop working in a few positions /stop working all together or overheat and set fire.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

The speedodometer sticks . . . . . The problem is a faulty stepper motor which essentially controls the movement of the speedometer needle. Aprox $600. 00 to repair instrument cluster.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2011

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that the speedometer remained stuck on 120 mph and would not provide an accurate reading of speeds traveled. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and was not repaired. The contact stated that there was a manufacturer recall for his year, make and model vehicle but his VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Yukon xl. While driving approximately 70 mph he noticed that most of the gauges on the instrument cluster were no longer working. He stated that the temperature gauge was working. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who performed a diagnostic test and stated that the instrument cluster was defective. The vehicle had not been repaired. The approximate failure and current mileages were 60,000.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2010

2005 faulty GMC Yukon dash system. Dealer originally told me it was the fuel pump but suggested it might be alcohol in the gasoline. I tried using ethanol free gas and it worked. I couldn't find any ethanol free gas on Dec 25th so I had to use 10% ethanol and my entire dash has quit working. I can't tell how fast I'm going, if I have fuel or how many miles I have on my vehicle. The GMC dealership wants me to replace my fuel pump, dash board and they estimate it will cost around $1500. It worked fine without ethanol!.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2010

The control panel on my GMC is freezing, the speedometer is freezing so I cannot tell how fast the car is going. The oil gauge has frozen and the dashboard keeps changing it light intensity from very bright to going dark when I'm driving sometimes occurring on poorly lite streets and parkways.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2010

The speedometer in my GMC Yukon denali is not working properly.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

On March 13, 2010 at 7 am I found my 2005 GMC Yukon xl, which was parked and locked in my driveway at the time, with the right rear turn signal flashing. After obtaining the keys to unlock the vehicle and upon opening the driver door I found the dash board completely melted as a result of a spontaneous fire which had occurred sometime after 12 am that morning. There was a small hole in the front windshield just above where the fire occurred. The headliner was completely charred all the way to the back of the vehicle. The contents of the vehicle were covered in heavy soot including a brand new toddler car seat, stroller, softball gear bag, dvd notebook filled with dvd's and various tools. After the fire was investigated by the maryland state fire marshall's office the fire was determined to be electrical. It never penetrated through the firewall into the engine compartment. It was also determined that the fire extinguished itself due to lack of oxygen and never affected the outside of the vehicle other than the hole left behind in the upper left hand corner of the windshield. It was raining that night, so it is believed the rain is what kept enough oxygen from entering through the hole. We contacted gm and our insurance immediately. We didn't hear back from gm until 3 days after the occurrence. They took a report. We were told that "the report would be sent to texas and we should hear something back within 5-10 business days. " today is day 11 and the only thing I have heard is that a letter has been sent by mail to us to submit to our insurance company. That letter has not yet been received. Had this vehicle been parked in our garage the outcome would have been more catastrophic as it would have been dry allowing more oxygen to enter the vehicle. What if this spontaneous fire occurred with my children inside while I was pumping gas? there is only one key hole to unlock the entire vehicle and the vehicle would have been locked for their safety.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2009

Speedometer acting erratic. At highway speed sometimes reads 25mph. Jerky reaction at all speeds. Oil pressure gauge stuck on 80 psi.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2009

Erratic speedometer reading.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

Speedometer malfunctions. Happened for several weeks, worked okay, then happened again. Sticks on 60 mph when going 0mph. Shows 120 mph when going 50 mph. Mechanic quote to replace is $640.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2009

When driving the speedometer needle will only go up. It will not come back down. So every time you stop it will add to your speed. I was doing 50mph and it said I was doing 120mph. It finally pegged at the highest speed it would go and would not move. I had it fixed at the dealership, which cost me $600. I found out there was a class action lawsuit about this. I filled out my claim form and was told by GMC that it was only a recall on certain VIN numbers for my 2005. That mine was not included for the refund. And that I had the new version of the speedometer that was fixed. Obviously, the new one they used didn't work either because I had the exact same problem as the 2003-2004 models.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Yukon. While driving various speeds, the speedometer would become erratic. The oil gauge would remain at zero and the speedometer would stop at 40 mph when the vehicle was shut off. The manufacturer stated that a diagnostic was needed at the cost of $90 to determine the cause of the speedometer failure. No repairs have been made to date. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were less than 56,600.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2008

My 2005 Yukon 4wd went out. It started as an intermittent problem. The first time I took it to the dealer since it was not currently having problems they were unable to identify the issue. This time it was out for several days before I finally took it in. Although nothing extreme happened, since I was aware of the issue, but if someone was not aware of the issue they could potentially lose control of there vehicle since the traction control system is also disabled in this problem. Replaced the 4wd actuator total bill 762. 00 was also told it could potentially short out the brain box for the 4wd operating system. The first time it happened it was when the weather was cold, never had an issue all summer until now, when the weather turned cold. My vehicle only had 38,000 miles the first time and 52,000 this time. My 1999 Yukon had 158,000 and I never had an issue with it.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2008

The speedometer went from 70mph to 120mph and then just stuck there- our speed was approximately 70mph at the time the speedometer failed.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

Speedometer began to act erratic, then completely failed at 60 mph. . . Even when stopped. The speedometer is not longer responsive and unreliable for safe travel. Gm owes the public a recall notice, before someone is killed! a new instrument cluster is required to fix this problem, a 500 dollar fix.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2007

2005 Yukon slt gauge cluster module quits working, speedometer, gas gauge and warning lights come on periodically for no reason.

35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

My speedometer has quit working.
