1 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2024

I have a service suspension light that continues to pop up on dashboard the most important issue that needs to be addressed is the brake lights. I have previously had the passenger side brake light stop working. In order to repair this you have to order a whole new taillight. My vehicle was approximatly 6 years old when this started happening. First incident (2022 with approximately 65000 miles) yesterday, I was pulled over by a policeman and both of my brake lights are not working. We found a way to sauder (I know this is incorrect spelling) the broken metal piece back together in the taillight; however, this is not the correct way to fix the underlying problem and clearly it is only a temporary fix because the passenger side broke again in a new spot.

I see almost 200 complaints and nothing has been done? not sure the point of this website, but, I'm going to put my 2 cents in. My 2016 Yukon denali passanger brake light has gone out, like many, many of other people. Why isn't this a recall? obviously, there is a manufacturing issue that needs to be addressed. After many videos I have watched I see that the circit board comes apart and can't be repaired but only replaced, at a extremly high price. I've also seen many tail light on these Yukons work off and on, so, randomly they can not work at any time and possibly get you rear ended. How do I file a civil action complaint to have GMC address this complaint and resolve this issue? please advise.

5 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2020

One brake light was intermittent, now both won't work at all. Doing an internet search, many, many people complain about this problem. The bulb cannot be replaced. Dealers charge $500+ for each tail light assembly and will not take responsibility. This is dangerous for brake lights to not work.

6 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2020

Right rear brake light works intermittently. No warning lights or messages on the dash. People have told me we have a brake light out, but when I check it later it works. Was pulled over for inoperable brake light, but later that evening the tail light was working. Seems to be a lot of info on internet about a broken strip of metal. Safety issue.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2020

My brake lights will work one minute and go out the next. I had a friend and my husband tell me that when they were following me the light was out when I stopped but at the next stop or at home it would work. This has been happening for months. Last week I took it for state inspection and the inspector said it was out I had to get it replaced. When I pulled forward it started working again to pass inspection. Today I took my Yukon to the dealership for an oil change and it went out again. Others waiting told me this is a recall on other year/models with GMC. There is a short in the circuit panel.

8 Brake Light On problem

Brake light taillights intermittent turns on and off.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

Brake lights stopped working almost was plowed into by 18 wheeler on I-75. Driver waved us over and informed us that he did not see us till right on top of us. Problem appears to be systemic enough that the GMC service department told us that it was common enough that they kept the brake lights in stock. Additionally there are numerous threads about this issue on the internet and even utube videos on where to remove material to access the offending circuit board to repair the known faulty circuit. The failure of these brake lights could have cost my family and me our lives. The dealership wanted to charge 1600$ to replace the brake lights. I reiterate the brake light failure is common enough that there are numerous threads on the internet to discuss the known weakness of the circuit board.

Brake light on vehicle works intermittently and is no longer safe. This is a problem GMC is well aware of and no solution in sight. This is a 2016 GMC Yukon with 22710 miles as I write. Brake light has failed while moving on the city streets. This failure is currently on the passenger side brake light. 13 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2019

My complaint relates to a known defect in 2015-18 GMC Yukon (and similar gm models) and defective brake lights. The left brake light in my 2016 GMC Yukon went out in approx early 2019. It was repaired under warranty. In November 2019, by right brake light went out. It was the same problem as the early broken light. I had less than 36,000 miles on the vehicle. I leased the vehicle in approx sept 2016 and the dealer claimed that the vehicle was past (less than 75 days) expiration of the 36 month warranty. So, the dealer quoted me $950+/- dollars to replace the entire housing. The dealer rep explained that the entire housing had to be replaced because it was led and didn't use a bulb. The dealer rep told me this is a common problem. I was incensed and refused to pay. I went home and googled the problem and found out that this is pervasive with the 2015-18 Yukon and other similar gm products. I also found a fix that was much less money only required about 2 hours of my time. This is a safety defect and, based on the dealer rep comment and google research, it is a well known problem. 14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2019

My wife was driving down a major road and a person pulled next to her at a stop to tell her that her brake lights were working only part of the time. Gm had just serviced my vehicle and didn't catch it, and upon researching the issue, it is a known faulty design of the tail light assembly. The led brake light starts intermittently failing at the 2 year point, leading to drivers following drivers to not know that the leading vehicle is stopping. This is a common issue and the only response from gm is to make the customer buy a new $700 brake light assembly. The issue is so common that multiple companies have started brake light repair services and multiple youtube videos exist to walk individuals through the process of repairing their own brake lights. The cost of the repair is so steep that I hesitate to get the problem fixed, and though gm reportedly has developed a replacement light assembly that corrects the fault, they are not taking responsibility for the defective brake light assemble that these vehicles come off the assembly line with. The major danger is that we drive from the front of the vehicle and likely do not know our brake lights are intermittently failing--since gm cannot even catch this when they do service on vehicles (mine had been in the shop for an oil change a few weeks before the brake issue), then they are leaving a lot of customers driving without brake lights to avoid the cost of the repair even though they approved a faulty design.

16 Brake Light On problem

17 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

The right rear tail light brake lights have gone completely out. These are one solid housing and have to be replaced to simply fix the brake light. Reverse and turn signal lights are ok. The housings cost 600-700 dollars each to replace which is a ludicrous amount to have to spend. In order to be within regulations for inspection, these have to be working. We feel there should be a recall as there are lots of complaints online about these housings.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2016

Front brake calipers sticking causing premature wear out of pads and driver side rotor at ~11900 miles. After first repair, ~900 miles and three weeks later, while driving down a snow covered city hill abs was engaged for a short period of time and then dash displayed a "brake failure" warning. After the message the front brakes locked up completely, causing loss of control of the vehicle and induced a slide of over 1000ft down the hill. Once the vehicle finally came to a stop, a loud sound was coming from the under carriage. Powering down the vehicle did not stop the sound. Restart of the vehicle displayed "service stabilitrack" and "service trailer brake" warnings. The abs, traction control slippage, and brake lights also all stayed illuminated. Vehicle had to be towed to dealer as it was unsafe to drive. Upon inspection at GMC dealer they reported the electronic brake control module (ebcm) was shorted out internally and second front rotor was also scored. They replaced the ebcm and rotor under warranty. I¿m told the caliper sticking issue is common, and this is not the first ebcm they have replaced. In summary, damage to rotors and pads is very dangerous. As the vehicle only has ~12000 miles no one would expect this type of wear. The failure of the abs system nearly caused an accident that could have been fatal as the vehicle was descending a hill and at the very time the abs was needed it caused lock up of the font wheels inducing a slide and loss of ability to steer.
