My seat heater malfunctioned, burning a hole in my seat backrest, and burning a hole in my jacket! 30 seconds after leaving my home, driving on a residential street, I suddenly felt a sharp poking in my back. When I reached back I was shocked to feel the seat burning and a hole in the seat! I reacted immediately, turning off the seat heater and pulling over. My car had smoke and smelled of burning plastic. I look at the back of my drivers seat and there was a hole in the seat where it burned straight through. And when I took off my jacket I found a hole there as well where the seat burned through it as well. I had a small burn, but it was only minor. It was a disturbing situation that could have been worse if I didn't react immediately or was driving on the highway. Today I took it into my local GMC dealer who didn't seem very concerned and let me know it would be expensive to get if fixed. I declined the service at this time. I then called GMC customer service who documented my situation, but also didn't seem concerned. I would have hoped GMC would have wanted to at least diagnose root cause to ensure there is not a larger problem on their hands. I am not looking for a payday here. I want to make sure this doesn't happen to others at a time that it could cause a more serious accident or injury.

The seat heater in the rear right seat overheated and caught on fire while my 10 yr. Old child was seated in it. We were in motion at the time on the interstate. I believe the heat mechanism failed and overheated and would not shut off causing the cushion to catch on fire. My insurance will not cover it (I did get a estimate to fix cover and cushion) and they suggested gm should investigate and fix the seat due to a major defect. Gm was no help and wanted to charge me $800 to fix or turn it into insurance. They acted like they have never seen this before and I caused it somehow.

Rear bucket seat (drivers side) caught fire. Fire attributed to seat heater failure by each the 1) fire marshal, 2) GMC dealer and 3) geico. Car was unoccupied, parked for approximately 2 hours before returning to open car and find car seat on fire. Car seat was not used by any passengers for at least a week prior to the fire. There were only two passengers using the car during an out-of-town trip when the fire occurred on fourth day. Thus, car seat heater some how turned itself on, remained on, overheated, and caught seat cushion material on fire. Luckily, car was parked turned off completely (except for seat heater!), locked and unoccupied. Further, fire was discovered before spreading, engulfing car and endangering others in the busy school parking lot. Had the seat caught fire while someone was actually sitting in the seat and/or the car was traveling at highway speeds, this failure would have resulted in injuries and possible fatalities. Seat heaters should never risk causing fires and need to be investigated.
My complaint pertains to heated seats - I was driving home from PA on 3/16/08 in the early am. My 17 yr old son was in the front passenger seat and a friend of his, mike was asleep on the middle row of seats. He had a blanket wrapped up to make a pillow and laid it on the seat. My son and I begin to smell a foul odor and assumed it was the manf. Plants that we were passing by. It wasn't until mike was awakened by the heat on his hand, that we realized the seat was smoldering. Mike did receive minor burns on his hand/arm. When mike moved the blanket, it was burnt all the way through and resembled "swiss cheese". The seat has a burn in it the size of a softball. We were able to extinguish the smoldering with water bottles that we had in the car. Had the blanket not been flame retardant, I hate to think what could have happened to mike's face and head! also, the thought of a baby or small child sitting in that back seat, makes me ill.

Heated seat module failed and instead of just not working it stayed on, ran my battery down, caused my seat to get really hot to the touch and I was concerned about it catching fire. If a module is faulty it should shut off not stay on and caused the possibility of a fire and run your battery down. Gm had to disconnect the seat module to get it to go off. They want $481 to fix and could not guarantee that it wouldn't happen again. I paid them $150 to disconnect and this way I know it won't happen again. This is a safety issue, my Yukon could have burned up. . . . . After buying a new battery (since this caused the other one to go bad)I had to disconnect the battery until I could get it to carl black to disconnect permanently.
Car: 2005 gm Yukon denali
occupants: father, driving; 16-year old son, passenger front; mother, left window seat middle row; 9-year-old daughter, lying on right and middle seats, of middle row. (daughter has cerebral palsy; unable to walk unassisted; wheelchair stowed in rear. ) both rear seat heaters on. Time: 9 a. M. 2/3/07
our family was almost 2 hours into a 3-hour trip, when I smelled an unusual odor. Thinking it was from outside, I tried to ignore for a few minutes, and then became overwhelmed by a noxious odor, and opened all windows. My husband pulled into a rest area on the florida turnpike about a mile later. Immediately when we parked, smoke began pouring out from under my daughter's seat. We frantically unbuckled her, as she has a disability. The smoke was very thick w/I a few seconds. We safely extracted her and all of us. My husband lifted her pillow, where she had been resting on the seat, only to find it charred underneath, and two gaping, still burning holes in the actual seat. He was eventually able to cut the seat heater cord and remove the cushion from the frame. Only 2 inches of pillow saved our precious daughter from being burned. In her words later, with limited speech, she told us she could smell the burning, but as unable to express it. The seat cushion had been out of the vehicle for nearly 30 minutes, as we were talking with emergency personnel, and incredibly, it began to smoke and burn again! they took no chances and doused it completely with water. GMC is now investigating.

My complaint is regarding the driver's side heated leather seat. I first noticed it was getting unusually hot, then I began to smell wire burning, and it eventually quit working altogether. I am giving an estimated date as to when it burned out altogether.
