Emission Control problems of the 1998 Honda Accord

Six problems related to emission control have been reported for the 1998 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2006

Check engine light came on. Had it scanned and produced code p0401 - egr insufficient airflow. Told by Honda that this was a recognized problem and a warranty extension had been issued, but since my car has 113k miles, it won't fall under the extension (80k) and it will cost me $370 to fix. I have not fixed it due to money and it cannot pass emissions, therefore, I am driving on an expired tag (cannot get tag without passing emissions).

2 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2004

I have experienced the check engine light problem several times starting the very first year that I bought my 1998 Accord. I have received error code p0401 insufficient egr flow detected and p1456 evap system leak. This seems to be a very common problem with these models. I have tried the "gas cap not being tight enough trick", I have had the car test for diagnostics and recieves no errors. I only use mid grade gasoline but have recently tried premimium. I have used fuel cleaners and have had the egr replaced. This light still comes on.

3 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2004

I have a 1998 Honda Accord lx v4. I have repeatedly had problems with the check engine light comming on. I have already replaced the O2 sensors and had the code cleared at least 4 times within the last year. My mechanic has noted that he can not find anything wrong with the car. . Read more...

4 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2003

98 Honda Accord with a check engine light caused by a clogged egr valve: I've had multiple occurrences. This is a well known design problem for Honda for 10+ years.

5 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 08/31/1998

Check engine light remains on in the vehicle, although perform was great. State requirements for motor vehicle registration recently changed. Catalytic converter failure, 02 sensor (both) failure, problem persists. Check engine light remains on. As of today, no help from Honda, although many attempts have been made. Problem began a few months after car purchase. While under warranty technicians reiterated there was no problem and reset light many times. Now this is a big problem; every year faced with same issue. Not mention vehicle does not perform at optimum performance level. Vehicle loses gas.

6 Emission Control problem

Failure Date: 08/30/1998
