Four problems related to noises during shifting have been reported for the 1998 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While shifting gears vehicle will not move. A loud noise was heard coming from underneath the vehicle. Consumer drove the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that transmission needed to be replaced due to worn out parts.
The vehicle's transmission produced a clicking sound when shifting gears. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The transmission made noise while the vehicle was in park. The vehicle would rattle as the vehicle was shifted. The service dealer stated that this was a common problem.
Possible parking pawl failure, loud clanging noise in front engine compartment as if metal component broke. In moving shifter from drive to reverse loud transmission gear noise is evident. From reverse to drive noise is not as loud. When shifter is moved to park there seems to be more movement in vehicle as transmission gear locks into parking gear. This is not normal wear on transmission , as dealer states.
Was driving and transmission failed to shift properly. This caused vehicle to move very slowly. Can hear a buzzing noise like its trying sto shift into proper gear after gas passes through. Have taken vehicle to dealer a few times, but mechanic could not find cause of problem. Problem was getting worse.
