2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2009

My 1998 Honda Accord is having transmission problems. I have had it worked on numerous time with nothing actually fixing the problem. It was a huge waste of money and time. It has a hard time shifting. I was pulling out on to a road that went up hill and on coming traffic almost hit me because my car wouldn't go into gear. Just in time it jerked into gear and I floored it getting out of the way just in time. The on coming car was extremely up set with me and I pulled over to the side of the road to gather myself. I had my transmission fluid changed at jiffy lube and about 2 weeks later the transmission began slipping. That event is what started it all. For all of the complains about the 1998 transmission problems I cant believe they don't see a safety issue. I could have easily cause a wreck that day.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

My 1998 Honda Accord automatic transmission has failed. There are 130k on it. In sept 2007 the transmission started to slip. When I came to a stop it would jump. The more that I drove it would shift hard into every gear. On oct 30 2007 the transmission began to jump from 1st to 3rd gear and then would not shift into 2nd gear at all. The rpms were at 3k in 1st gear and would begin to jump wildly. I have not been able to drive the car since it is a hazard on the road. It will cost around $1200 for a new transmission which I do not have.

5 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2007

I bought my 1998 Honda at the san francisco Honda dealership in san francisco and did all of my maintenance work at their shop. It has 70,000 miles on it and has had no serious problems. On Sunday I was crossing the bay bridge from oakland into the city and the engine light went on and the engine revved like I was in a drag car race and lurched forward and lost power and then accelerated violently all the way across the bridge. I literally almost got rear ended a few times and I am lucky to be alive! I was able to get my car to the dealership and they told me they had to charge me a $140 non-refundable "diagnostic fee" to determine what was wrong but they suspected it was the transmission. I got a call the next day letting me know the transmission was slipping and that it would need to be replaced at a cost of $5,000 parts and labor and they would have to order the transmission and would probably take 2 weeks to even get it? the warranty I had purchased had,of course, expired and no matter how much I tried to get a reason for this happening they just said "it happens". So after spending $17,000+ on a car and maintaining it I now have a dangerous and expensive lemon. I paid my $140 blood money and got my car out of there and deciding what to do next?.

6 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

1998 Honda Accord ex-v6. Transmission failure. 1. I was driving on the highway and suddenly the transmission started to disengage and re-engage by itself and then locked the transmission. 2. Before the failure, I started to notice the transmission slippage around 55,000 miles. I brought it to Honda dealership at around 60,000 miles and they just replaced the transmission oil. However, the problem was just getting worse. 3. After the transmission locked up, I almost lost control, I have to put the transmission to neutral and had it towed to Honda dealership. I was told that transmission was out and need to be replaced. The replacement transmission cost was about $3000 4. I just noticed that there were similar recall for Honda and Acura transmission.

7 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2006

Driving east on toll road 408 in far right lane going aprox. 60 mph and transmission (b7xa) down shifting locking the front wheels. Lost control of the car and spun backwards across all left lanes of traffic and then back across all right lanes of traffic and almost hit a light pole. Transmission is slipping and will not shift correctly. . . Transmission is faulty and Honda knows it but will do nothing about a recall to protect people/owners.

8 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2006

My Honda coupe v6 had 67,000 miles on it when the transmission started slipping. As a consequence of this, I cannot safely make left turns as the car won't accelerate immediately and passing is not safely done either. I do not drive it now except to work, 2 miles away, and locally. The repair shop said I need a new transmission and the cost will be between $2,500 to $3,000. I have not had it fixed yet.

9 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Transmission slipping daily.

10 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2005

(1) driving from pennsylvania to ocean city, maryland for vacation and the check light came on when we were almost there. We pulled over on side of road and checked fluids and car and everything appeared to be okay until we could make it to garage. Started driving again in 4th gear and transmission started to slip and car started to downshift and rpm's went up. (2) let car sit and then tried to drive again in 3rd and 4th gears but same problem kept occuring. Then we put it in 2nd gear and that worked fine. We drove in 2nd gear going slow in the middle of a place we did not know and barely made it to the beach where my car sat the whole time and we could not drive anywhere. We had to have the car towed from ocean city to harrisburg, PA (about a 4 hour drive) (3) after talking with a Honda certified technician and others we determined it was the tranmission going out. My car is still sitting and I am trying to figure out what I am going to do considering a new transmission costs 3 to 4 thousand dollars as I was told by Honda. This is great considering I have only had my car for 2 years and still have 3 years to pay on it and it only has 86,000 miles on it.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2005

I have a 1998 Honda Accord v6 with 103000 miles on it and suspected problems with the transmission since 93000 miles. The transmission slips at 20, 30, and 40 mph. I called the Honda corp in CA and told them my Honda Accord ex v6 transmission was having problem and they told me to take it to a Honda dealer to check it before I can make a claim on it. The Honda dealer looked at it said I need a new transmission and there will be a $90 fee. The dealer and I called the Honda corp to put in a claim and he explained that I have completed all recommended maintenance schedule and a day later the Honda corp called the dealer and denied to assist in any way with my claim. I did not even receive a phone call back from the Honda corp. The dealer called me to tell me the news and they gave me a transmission for over $4200. I call the Honda corp and spoke with kevin brown and he said can not do anything to help and sorry your case it closed. How is my case closed only after one day of evaluation. Kevin brown also said that the Honda corp has assisted other people with 98 v6 Accords with more miles than I have, but he said those cases were different. How are other cases so different when I have taken good care of my car. After reading other websites and forums, I can see this is a more common problem then I thought and now I have read over 100 complaints with Honda Accord v6 98 and 99 transmissions on the site. Some action needs to be taken now!!!!!!!!! the consumer disputes NHTSA's assessment of the 1998 Honda Accords transmission failures. The consumer found several issues which were very similar to his vehicle. The consumer requested a replacement transmission.

14 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2004

I have a 1998 Honda Accord with transmission problems. . After startin the car in the morning as I drive down the street the transmission revs higher then normal when shifting from first to second (driving normaly) like it suppose to shift at 3000 rpm but when it gets to 3k it shifts but then the rpm's just climb for 1k more then the car just lags a lil as it goes into second after the car is warmed up that problem disapears. The other problem is when slowin down to make a turn and if no cars are comin I gently step on the gas to go (not completly stoped) the transmission slipps and then stutters till 2k rpm then it cathes and launches the car forward. I have talked to the Honda dealership and they wont do anythin and want to charge me 4k for a new transmission. I read of several other people are having this problem. .

16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2003

I own a 1998 Honda Accord sedan which was bought in December of 1998. Like so many other people who own the 1998-1999 models, I am having transmission problems and the transmission needs to be replaced. I have 100,000 miles on it and the car is serviced whenever the time came. My dad is a mechanic so he was always strict on maintenance. Even timing belt and all other belts were changed out. I am very disappointed because I thought Honda's were reliable. This is a 5 yr. Old car and already the transmission needs to be replaced. I've called my dealership and explained everything. They gave me a number to Honda of America to make a complaint. They made a claim and called me back with no help to me. Their customer service is really bad also, not much help and were rude. They stated that the warranty is over and will not cover anything. Now my car is just sitting at there and can;t be driven safely. The problem is that the transmission slips on all the gears and will not drive correctly. At a stop, the car would jerk back to first roughly and the when I accelerate, it slips on first gear and then finally catches violently. I am very disappointed in Honda overall. They are suppose to be reliable cars. Please look into this complaint because I'm one of the many who are dealing with the same issues. The price for a rebuilt transmission is 3500. I didn't expect to buy a new car in 98 and 5 yrs later have to replace the transmission. There is something fishy going on with the 98-99 transmission. Even the 00-01 Accords have now warrant with a 100,000 mile/ 7 yr. Warranty. Honda seems to know something we don't know and I think it's a recall. Please help if possible. Here's a website /forum where many others are voicing their concerns and complaints. . Read more...
