Speed Control Linkage problems of the 1998 Honda Accord

Eight problems related to speed control linkage have been reported for the 1998 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2002

Vehicle would intermittently lurch forward when starting, and then stall out. Vehicle been to dealer ,and problem reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information .

2 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2001

Gas pedal sticks continually after cold starts or short periods of not running. Excessive and hard pressure must be applied to gas pedal, evidently to engage the throttle plate and/or throttle linkage. The surprising result to the driver is that the vehicle will lunge forward, often squealing tires, in a speedy and dangerously uncontrolled manner. Can be a potential safety problem, especially if driving in confined areas, parking lots or around predestrians. Our son recently purchased a 1998 Honda Accord, which had developed the same problem. Honda customer relations office admits a service bulletin was released to its dealers about this problem but will not acknowledge it being a safety issue. I have owned 1981, 1987, still own a 1993 Honda Accord among other makes and models and have never experienced gas pedals that bind and stick like the one in this 1998 Honda Accord.

3 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 11/15/1999

Car was parked. When started it suddenly accelerated, first backward onto the sidewalk, resulting in a crash. When put into drive it accelerated rapidly despite applying the brakes full force. I estimate speed of 50+ mph down a crowded city street. When I pulled the emergency.

4 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 09/21/1999

The gas pedal repeatedly sticks requiring excesssive pressure to get the car moving. The car then dangerously lurches forward. The dealer has been contacted and acknowledges the problem and that it has been reported in other Hondas. They have no fix for the problem, except to clean the linkage which helps for 2-3000 miles.

5 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 04/20/1999

Whle changing gears vehicle suddenly accelerated, resulting in a collision. Dealer has inspected the vehicle.

6 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 04/03/1999

Was driving slowly & moving into left lane to turn. Tow truck in left lane. Proceeded to apply brakes. The engine started to rev up & sounded like it was roaring. Rearended tow truck. The wheels on Honda were spinning & smoking as if the accelerator pedal was in use. Foot was never on accelerator pedal. Wheel spinning had to be stopped by turning off the ignition. This is the second time engine had revved & accelerated with foot not on pedal, but on brakes.

7 Speed Control Linkage problem

Failure Date: 10/25/1998

While pulling into the driveway the vehicle suddenly accelerated. Hit another vehicle and ran onto the stairs of a house, knocked down a fence, and ran into a chipping machine that stopped it. The airbags never deployed. The manufacturer is currently looking into this.

8 Speed Control Linkage problem

Upon shifting vehicle from park to reverse on flat surface with foot depressed on the brake pedal, vehicle suddenly accelerated, running into a fence/trash cans, and a street sign efore vehicle came to a stop. Also, gas tank hose was punctured, causing a fuel leak. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide any further details.
