24 problems related to vehicle speed control have been reported for the 1998 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
During the normal speed on the 40 mile per hour street transmission suddenly stack and the vehicle did not accelerate more than 30 mile per hour . After that date this condition continues on and off . On the other side the transmission changes the speed only in 1st and 2nd gear. All nesessary transmission adjustments has been done. Oral mechanical estimate for repair costs $ 2200.
My 98 Honda Accord lx automatically decelerated to 0 mph when I drove it on the highway (I-10 houston). The signal lights (maintenance light and the key light) turned on first and then the speed dropped to zero all the sudden by itself. I tried to push the acceleration pad and no response at all. I was about to park car to the side. Then after about 1-2 minutes, it became normal again. This is the first time the problem occurred. It was a shock to me. Very worry about if it died on the highway.
Consumer shifted the vehicle into reverse and pressed on the accelerate pedal and vehicle accelerated in reverse at a high rate of speed. Had taken vehicle to dealer, and dealer could not resolve the defect.
My mother was recently involved in an accident that totaled her car. My brother and his wife were the first owners of the vehicle, and my mother had the car for about 1 1/2 years. She had stopped, put the car into park, got out to open a parking lot gate, got back in, stepped on the brake, and tried to shift the car into gear. She had a very difficult time getting the car back into gear. She finally was able to shift and the car immediately went into a high rev and accelerated uncontrollably. This resulted in the car smashing into a wall less than 60 feet away. Luckily the air bags worked and my mother & step-father's injuries were not too serious. My mother's foot was definitely on the brake pedal as there is a lock out mechanism that prevents the car from being taken out of park if the brake pedal is not pushed. This may or may not be related, but she was having difficulty getting the handle to move. The problem with it not moving had occurred previously, usually on a slight incline, but the Honda dealer looked at it and told her nothing was wrong. My mother is a retired school bus driver with a perfect driving record, no accidents, and only uses one foot to control the vehicle. Now she is afraid to drive and is worrying and second guessing herself that she did something wrong. I have found over 30 similar complaints regarding 1998 Honda Accords. I do not know how many other Honda's are having similar problems. It appears that Honda continues to place the blame on driver error, but we believe there is a serious problem here.
When on a hill and take foot off the brakes to give acceleration vehicle will start to roll back. Dealer will be contacted.
Intermittently vehicle will surge foward and then stall when starting. Vehicle has been to dealer ,and dealer was unable to duplicate problem. Feel free to provide any further information.
As transmission shifts from first to second gear vehicle lunges forward and rpm's go up. Vehicle has not been examined by dealer. Please add further information.
Consumer was at a stop, when vehicle accelerated and the driver seat collasped, dealer determined that bracket of seat bottom had broken.
Precludes a controlled , fluid, and timely take off at intersections.
Was in a 35 mph zone and was to stop for red light and to turn left. Service road between me and flat-back big truck that had already stopped for light. Put on brakes and started accelerating, and had no brakes or steering. Was raining. Probably hydroplaned. Picked up speed and went head-on into back of parked truck. I am injured and am under doctors care. Bag should have deployed but didn't. Whole front of my car was smashed. Have pictures.
Transmission slipped out of gear and vehicle jumped forward. Lost control of vehicle and hit tree.
Vehicle will stall out intermittently without warning. Rmp will go up and vehicle will shift into neutral gear. Vehicle will jerk forward when stopping. Contacted dealer. Cannot find problem.
On 3 occasions the car has died while accelerating up a hill. All the indicators light up on the dash. The car loses power steering and braking ability. There is no problem starting the car after this occurs. The car is also often hesitant to accelerate.
When taking off at low speeds the car will hesitate and then take off. At around 45 mph it will also hesitate. This has happend hunderds of times. The dealer spent a whole weekend with the car and found nothing. My wife went there drove it and it happened again. Th kept the car for a week and did not find anything, the dealer claims that that is the way the car works. My 91 Accord has neevr done this.
The vehicle self accelerated when the driver stepped on the brake resulting in damage to the vehicle due to loss of control and accident. Yh.
Vehicle accelerates uncontrollably; consumer pulled into driveway, had foot on brakes, and vehicle accelerated on its own. Driver had to swerve into a field. Sometimes had to put in neutral to slow vehicle down. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated it could be the floor mats. Please add VIN #.
On November 1st, I got in my car and immediately after turning the ignition the tachometer jumped up to 2000 rpm and was sustained for minutes. Then, the car accelerator began surging between 1000 to 1500 rpm while still in the "park" gear. I did not know what to do so I kept my foot on the brake and kept it there while I shifted the car in to reverse to back out of a parking stall. The car was accelerating in reverse without depressing the gas pedal. Then, when I shifted the car into "drive" , the transmission jumped immediately into 2nd gear and began accelerating at 30 mph without decompression of the gas pedal. This continued on my entired drive into work (15 miles). When I got off work, I started to drive home when I notices my "check engine light" was illuminated on the dash board. I then drove to the dealership to report the problem. The preliminary cause from the dealer ship was noted as an "electrical problem". I believe this problem is dangerous enough to investigate since the acceleration of the car was affected. I am willing to offer more information to the ntsa on the outcome of this problem. The car as of 11/2/99 is at the dealership being repaired. Sincerely, virginia l. Glen.
All of a sudden while driver had foot on brake vehicle accelerated to a very high speed, causing owner to crash into a tree. There was no deployment of air bags. The problem was reported to the manufacturer. The vehicle was towed to a body shop.
Delay of acceleration from rolling. When gas pedal is pressed to speed up, from slow rolling, the car does not speed up. Instead, there are few seconds of lagging before actually speeds up. Extremely dangerous when trying to get into the freeway/highway.
While stopping in traffic with foot on brake was hit from behind and vehicle accelerated out of control, resulting in a collision. Vehicle sustained extensive damage.
While slowing to a near stop, the vehicle accelerated instead of coming to a stop and the vehicle would not decelerate as the driver pressed the brake harder which lead to his foot slipping off the brake.
While in neutral position and on a flat surface vehicle acclerated forward which may have caused a crash. Dealer could not determine the cause of the problem. Please provide further information.
I have asked the dealer to repair a problem with a sticky accelorator on three occasions with no success. They admit it is a problem with this model car but offer no remedy. It is extremely dangerous and has almost resulted in two accidents! please demand that Honda remedy this serious defect immediately. My dealer's incompetent service manager claims he cannot duplicate the problem in my car. However, one of his technicians did. I've given up trying to have them repair the car and hope you can convince the manufacturer to recall this car. Someone, somewhere will be killed if this is not repaired. Thank you. Please call me directly if I can offer any additional information.
Transmission makes noise and experiences power surge when engaged in reverse.
