13 problems related to automatic transmission torque converter have been reported for the 1999 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2014

My transmission failed because I was told the torque converter should have been replaced by the manufacturer Honda immediately after Honda realized the 199 Honda Accord torque converters were faulty. I purchased my car new and was not told about the situation until the transmission failed due to the faulty torque converter. Honda did not set up a recall or notify 199 Honda Accord owners. They paid for the repairs when the transmissions failed for a few years. I have only 62,45a miles on my car and now have a $3007. 00 bill to replace my transmission. This would not have occurred if I was told to replace the torque converter by Honda as soon as they were aware of the problem. I should be reimbursed by Honda. They refuse to do so.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

Yellow check engine light is on. Transmission torque converter clutch is causing severe chattering and/or lurching when starting up or at low speed. Car is near stall and is vulnerable to an accident especially at intersections after a stop. Car has only 83,000 miles.

3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2009

The "check engine warning light came on" and the trouble code is p0740, transmission torque converter circuit malfunction. The car surges forward from a stopped position even at the slightest depression of the gas pedal which makes it prone to an accident by hitting the vehicle in front. I brought it to the dealer and they reset the warning light, test drove it and told me that they can't find anything wrong but told me that the transmission may be getting bad. On the way home, the warning light came on again. I brought it to a trans repair shop and they checked the trouble code to be the same p0740 code. They checked the resistance of all the solenoids and replaced the linear solenoid which was out of spec. The warning light came on again on the drive home. I had it scanned again and the code was p0740 again. The trans shop said that they may eventually need to completely rebuild the transmission and may cost around $3500-4000. I have already spent $400 so far. I now drive the car sparingly until I can have the funds to get a rebuilt trans. I wish the NHTSA would require Honda to recall this model year like they did for the 2000 model since there seemed to be an unusually alarming high rate of complaints on 1999 Accord transmissions.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2009

Transmission slips when shifting between 1-2 and 2-3 gears check engine light came on reporting "po740 - torque converter clutch circuit error".

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2008

Check engine light came on. Brought to the dealer and they said the code indicated a torque converter circuit malfunction. Dealer supposedly checked and road tested and said they couldn't find anything wrong. They reset the warning light and said the transmission maybe going bad. I was charged their typical outrageous labor cost. I should have brought it to an auto parts store who could have told me the same thing for free. But I thought they would know more about what is wrong with their cars than an auto parts code reader, I was totally wrong. The warning light came back on during my drive back home from the dealer. All the required maintenance has been performed by the dealer since the time I bought it new. The car had around 98,000 miles when the warning light first appeared. I brought it to a transmission repair shop next and they replaced the linear solenoid and checked the others which were all fine, but the warning light came back on. The trans. Shop said this is a predominant problem with 99 and 2000 Accords, but the mfr only recalled the 2000 models. I know this is true because I also own a 2000 Accord which was recalled by the factory for transmission problems. The mechanic said that Honda should have recalled this model year also since the 99 and 2000 models were essentially identical. Now the only recourse is to overhaul or replace the transmission which will cost lots more money. The manufacturer should recall the 99 Accords as well or at least shoulder half of all the expenses because of this defect. I have own several vehicles other than Hondas and I have never encountered any transmission problem and all have gone over 150,000 miles. Good bye Honda! all my family and friends will surely know about this.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2008

I have a 1999 Honda Accord lx 4 door sedan with 71,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on, and the dealer says the p0740 code is torque converter clutch assembly failure is a $2900 replace the transmission job. A transmission shop told me the same thing. A transmission with 71,000 miles, even 7 years old, should not go out!!!! there was a Honda transmission class action suit covering only 2000-2003 trannys, my model year is excluded but same problem exists !!!!!.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2006

- the contact stated that while driving the 1999 Honda Accord with 80000 failure mileage at 45 mph and coming to a red light the vehicle stopped, but in an attempt the drive the vehicle, it did not move, it jerked forward eventually. 8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2005

I am writing to express dissatisfaction with my 1999 Honda Accord ex v6, VIN# 1hgcg1655xa030151. About a week ago my check engine light came on. I checked the code and it indicated torque converter clutch malfunction. The car was shifting and driving fine, so I brought it in to the Honda dealer to get the transmission fluid changed. I cleared the error, but it came right back on. The car was shifting and driving fine. Today on my way to work at 75 mph at highway speeds, it shifted in to second and stayed there. You can imagine what that did to rpms! now it won't go in to reverse or any other forward gear but second. I called my Honda dealer and they said I'm looking at a transmission replacement. $2950 just for the parts (doesn't include labor). That comes with a 36,000 mile warranty that I will easily use up in one year due to my long commute. Being that the car has 136,000 miles on it, I figured it was highly regrettable, but understandable. . Read more...

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2005

I have a 99 Honda Accord ex v6 and found out recently that the transmission had to be replaced. It was having serious shifting problems and the check engine light came on. The hadn't even hit 90,000 miles yet. When I went in to Honda to see what the light was on for it turns out it was a "torque converter clutch system failure" and the transmission would have to be replaced. Honda told me it was no longer under warranty (3yr, 36k mi warranty) so they claim they couldn't replace it. It shouldn't matter if it isn't under warranty. No one purchases a car, new or used, to have to get a whole new transmission before the car even makes it to 100,000 miles. Besides the major mechanical purchase, Honda's faulty transmissions are a safety hazard. I can't recall how many times I've practically been ran off the road by tractor trailers because my car couldn't shift and accelerate fast enough to get onto the highway. Honda should be ashamed of themselves. Does it really take someone to die before they try to remedy the situation?.

10 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2005

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the transmission recurringly failed. Initially, the torque converter solenoid circuit failed and the transmission was replaced. The contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle lost acceleration power and the transmission failed again. The transmission was replaced a second time at 46,000 miles but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 151,029.

11 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2004

While driving at 36 mph, the vehicle suddenly jerked forward, followed by a metal to metal noise. The driver coasted the vehicle to a stop, then had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The dealership flushed the transmission because the fluid was burnt, but the metal noise was still present. A diagnostic test was performed. The front pump was found to be the main cause of the failure. Excessive metal was also found in transmission pan as well as fluid and the forward drum was damaged. A re manufactured transmission with a torque converter was installed. No recall pertaining to this vehicle found.
